Breakfast J bay commentary by Bruce Gold

Breakfast J bay coffee ‘n commentary by Bruce Gold

Living up above Supers in J bay gives you a somewhat elevated perspective on life as it rolls through way down below. Staying at Kurt Mariano’s palatial spread also puts you in coffee proximity to Bruce Gold, and offshore mornings are spent savouring the sunrise and listening to inspired commentary from Bruce.

As you will see in this clip, the cold front has whipped up some swell down south, enough to take note of as the front sweeps across the country. As the front follows on through, the weather will mellow, and with low tide mid-mornings guaranteeing some offshore at least, the entire east coast should come alive. It’s the first real winter cold front with offshore conditions in the early – a good omen of plenty more good things to come. Thanks for the heads up Bruce.

Hot on Bruce’s agenda is the Rhino debacle our government is allowing to happen – Mastertons Coffee have been helping by donating a percentage of revenues on this special blend of their well-appreciated range of coffees. Known as Chipimbere, the full flavoured coffee can be found at the Spar in J bay and other places.

A Bruce Gold good morning from j Bay

Skipjack and Grunter murder by The Rod Club in PE

Skipjack and Grunter murder by The Rod Club in PE

Check how proud this dude is for killing a non-edible but beautiful would be free swimming skipjack, springer, or ladyfish, as they are more affectionately known. Such an amazing sportfish the springer is, but to kill one? That takes a special breed. I mean, we will eat a spotted grunter, a delicious kob…but a rare to find springer?skipjack murder

And then be a part of a club competition that advocates the killing of as many as 15 Spotted Grunter (note the capitals) by a single boat , and the winners win cash for the rape?

Wowser. There are some serious problems in the PE area, if this type of barbaric behaviour is permitted.

Cape St. Frances in the mist

Cape St. Frances in the mist

Cruising the St. Frances peninsula in the mist as a cold front chills the warm land makes for some amazing vistas.

Having Mr. Bruce Gold along as company paints an even more interesting set of pictures…

The lighthouse is undergoing some much needed refurbishment, and the penguin station is full of people and penguins. Fishermen were enjoying some good brusher / musselcracker action on the point in the gulleys, shad were coming out in the corner. The surf was lame and the water really, really cold – but still the weekend warriors were hard at it.

The afternoon led us to the St. Frances Resort down the beach, where we were pleasantly treated to a superb live performance by local but travelling musician – Johnno. Really good, as were the ice cold draft beers and seafood baskets. Thanks Fasie!

Josh Jantjes and his J-Bay kob

Josh Jantjes and his J-Bay kob

Fishing with a live strepie a few minutes ago, local J-Bay angler Josh Jantjes got supper in the bag when he pulled this tasty kob out of the sea just down from the point.

The water has warmed up with the cold front that has moved in over the southern Cape and the fishing looks good! Nice fish George!

Sharks and all in Mossel Bay

Sharks and all in Mossel Bay…by Brandon Parsons

More news in from The Sardine Newspaper correspondent Brandon Parsons. When he is not teaching people how to papgooi and catch bass in an around Gauteng – he is chasing huge sharks, rays and other cool gamefish in the Southern Cape area – Mossells being his favourite haunt…
“I went down to mosselbaai recently in search of some sharks and managed to keep myself and my crew busy, despite the conditions being horrible and the sea not playing along at all .

On this adventure we were targeting some non edibles again, and really got stuck in properly. Our rods were crazy busy with the smaller shark species that I managed to get just behind the bank. We were getting bored of the smaller ones when suddenly on of our crew’s rod revved like a rental car in Chatsworth! He was on proper and managed to land a really nice size raggie (Ragged Tooth Shark).
Since I left, there have been reports of some smaller garrick and a couple of nice duckies!!!!!!
Lets all remember to catch and release – as it is the future of our sport. Brandon Parsons”
Thanks Brandon – keep catching those sharks man!
