MYDO Silver Bullet Shad Trace

MYDO Silver Bullet Shad Trace: this rig can turn anyone into a shad fishing pro…

A Moving Bait

Time and time again, the proof has been in the hookup ratio. A fast or slow-moving bait has a far better chance of hooking a shad than a bait floating about in the foam on a standard top bung. Or any other, conventional shad trace.

Shad strike fast…watch this video, shot out off the backline at Port Shepstone, on the Niteshift, a few seasons back. Sometimes the shad come really thick to these patches of water – and this was one of them. Enabling a deep look into shad attack behaviour. As documented thoroughly by my GoFish Camera.

Shad Attack Video

As you can clearly see, the lazy bait flailing around in the current down there, does little to attract anyone. Then as soon as I start to crank, the shad come in thick and fast. Attacking in series in a dedicated display of aggression.

Off the rocks

“I like to move it, move it…” – Reel 2 Real

Just by keeping your bait moving through a gulley or channel, you can keep it off the rocks. This also means that you can fish shallow ledges effectively now. You just don’t leave your bait to snag – you got to keep moving it.

If you are fishing over sand, you can most definitely allow the bait to hit the bottom and just sit there. Waiting for a kob or something like that.

Time to Strike

When they get riled up and all excited like this – it’s time to strike. As soon as you feel the first knocks as you start winding in, knowing they are now goading each other into the attack, just put in a few sharp jabs and BANG! That sticky little treble at the back of this trace will grab him every time.

Most often the treble gets the shad in the mouth. Or just on the outside as he was darting away from a bite. This all happens at a very high speed and you can now take advantage of this momentum.

Rigging a Bait

Could not be more simple. The elegance of the presentation is up to you and comes with practice. But with the simplicity of a lead hook, plus one dropper and a treble on the end of that, you just cant get this wrong. Cut a fillet or loin from a sardine or something…hook one end on the front hook (the one attached to the baitswimmer head), and drape the other end down over the treble. Tie this all together nice and pretty – with cotton.

And there it is…

No bait?

No problem. Use your favourite (but expendable) plastic like a paddletail. Or a Split-tail…anything goes on this trace…just use the front hook as per normal, and hok the treble in somewhere down towards the tail. Cotton up (not compulsory), and off you go…

Spinning Rod

You just don’t need a big gun to catch shad. Even big ones. A 20 lb coffee grinder on a 7 or 8-ft-long rod will be perfect for anyone. Big or small.

You can kit yourself out right here on The Sardine News with this MYDO Shad Spinning Outfit.

Windy Days

Sometimes the shad really dig the onshore. They want you to suffer. In the spray. The cold sometimes. Waves crashing in short period from the north. Shad like this stuff.

So you gonna sometimes need some extra weight…

If it’s favourable, and no wind, or even an offshore, go light. Use the 1/4-ounce model. You can go up, to the half-ounce. And then even a full ounce if the shad are very far away. Or if the wind is pushing you over backwards.
