Umhlanga Rocks – The second event of the national Quiksilver Get Free Series is set to take place at Umhlanga Rocks, KZN later this month. South Africa’s best professional surfers will soon make their way to Bronze Beach, Umhlanga Rocks to compete in this Surfing South Africa (SSA) Pro Surf Tour (PST) event which caters for open men, u20 junior boys and u16 boys surfers. The event will run over the weekend of May 30 and 31.

This three-part series got underway in March at Cape Town’s Long Beach and was welcomed by top South African surfers in attendance. Over 90 of South Africa’s best did battle in the cold cape waters for their share of over R40 000 in prize money and prizes. Event organisers are expecting a similar number of entries for the second leg of the series at Umhlanga Rocks.

“The Get Free Series has been very well received by the surfers and the various communities. There are very few surf events on the calendar these days so the guys are really excited about this opportunity. We are hoping for some good, solid surf – which is likely, especially at this time of the year. We are looking forward to a great event at the end of the month,” said Quiksilver’s Marketing Manager Dane Patterson.

Local standout Beyrick de Vries is a clear favorite to take the open men’s title in KZN. Umhlanga Rocks local de Vries won two out of the three Quiksilver events in the same series last year.

“I am really excited that the guys at Quiksilver decided to have one of these events at my home break. I have been traveling a lot this year so it will be nice to compete in an event on my doorstep,” said de Vries.

Other favourites looking to take home top honours include Capetonian Michael February, who recently placed second at the WSL Martinique Pro in the Caribbean, as well as Dylan Lightfoot, Jeffreys Bay, and Durban North’s David van Zyl who have proven to be top contenders in all surf conditions.

In the u20 boy’s division, all eyes will be on Salt Rock’s Shane Sykes. The eighteen year old has grown from strength to strength in his competitive career and will be a firm favourite in the KZN waters, Sykes recently graced the cover of Zigzag Surfing Magazine’s May edition. Other top juniors include current SA junior champion Michael Monk from East London and Matt McGillivray from Jeffreys Bay who put on a fine exhibition of surfing to win the first event of the series this year. The boys u16 division is a new addition to the Get Free Series this year, Adin Masencamp emerged victorious with a convincing win at the first event in Cape town and will be looking to continue his winning form in KZN. Other juniors to look out for include Ethan Fletcher (Kommetjie), Jake Elkington (Kommetjie) and Joshe Faulkner (Jeffreys bay).

The competition will get underway at 08h00 on Saturday. The third and final event of the series will take place in Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape on August 29 and 30.

The Quiksilver Get Free Series support sponsors include Zigzag Surfing Magazine, Techniblock sunscreen, Drift Action Cameras, Skullcandy, Neff and Red Bull.

Breakfast J bay commentary by Bruce Gold

The Brucifire Surf Report officeCoffee and peanut butter

Breakfast J bay coffee ‘n commentary by Bruce Gold

Living up above Supers in J bay gives you a somewhat elevated perspective on life as it rolls through way down below. Staying at Kurt Mariano’s palatial spread also puts you in coffee proximity to Bruce Gold, and offshore mornings are spent savouring the sunrise and listening to inspired commentary from Bruce.

As you will see in this clip, the cold front has whipped up some swell down south, enough to take note of as the front sweeps across the country. As the front follows on through, the weather will mellow, and with low tide mid-mornings guaranteeing some offshore at least, the entire east coast should come alive. It’s the first real winter cold front with offshore conditions in the early – a good omen of plenty more good things to come. Thanks for the heads up Bruce.

Hot on Bruce’s agenda is the Rhino debacle our government is allowing to happen – Mastertons Coffee have been helping by donating a percentage of revenues on this special blend of their well-appreciated range of coffees. Known as Chipimbere, the full flavoured coffee can be found at the Spar in J bay and other places.

Featuring Sung Min Cho surfing in Tofo

Man these three kids can rip, featured surfer Sung Min Cho and his two brothers only started surfing a year or so back, but have been spotted (and photographed) showing remarkable aptitudes for surfing. I have shared waves with Minnie (Sung Mini Cho) at the infamous Barra and man, he is fearless. You can check that video out right here.

But here he is captured in a full swing and stylish carve, showing uncanny resemblance to the late Buttons Kaluhiakalani in both poise and power. Minnie is backed up by a host of groms running riot all over Praia do Tofo – the perfectly honed and warm little waves in the bay make a great breeding ground for eager young surfers. Groms!

The site also carries photos and information regards the different boat and package options, crew portfolios, a video channel, a gallery and a downloads section where you can grab a desktop that will keep you from working for hours!

So, to fire things up, here’s Captain Duarte Rato coming out blasting with an excerpt from his latest fishing commentaries, from over the last few days, on Bazaruto waters…to read the entire report and to see the pictures, you can click http://fishbazaruto.com/2015/05/06/durban-boys-ma…-bite-bazaruto/

“First bite on the first day was a huge, probably 30kg plus GT that Bjorn hooked on a Bobara, unfortunately the #50 braid was not enough to stop this fish and after a brief fight it cut us off. We then released a smaller GT, some snoek, cuda, wahoo, queenfish and some reef species. The next day we got some cuda, snoek and bonnies on the spinning tackle, a nice dorado on a jube jube live bait, some YFT on rappies and the highlight of the day was hooking a 150 pound Black Marlin on a jube jube live bait on a cuda trace. Solly had a awesome fight on the TLD 30 tackle but unluckily the fish spit the hooks as it jumped right by the boat. Third day was slower as we decided to go north and found some green pea soup, we did hook another monster GT, this time on a 3 kg jobfish live bait intended for a big cuda but could not stop it. We caught some other smaller live bait and got some cuda and a shark and the boys then had some action on a lot of queenfish, garfish and some other smaller species. The weather was supposed to blow us out on the last day so the boys decided we should rather go and enjoy a braai at Magaruque Island. We left just after 9am and decided to just have a quick spinning session before hopping on the island. What followed was 2 hour of absolute light tackle insanity with queen mackerel. We must have had more than 40 chases, lots of cut off´s and ended up releasing 12 snoek and 2 bonito´s. The trip was finished in a BIG way with a delicious braai and a few dops on the Island!”

Thanks Captain Duarte Rato! Keep up the good work! Read the full story here.
