Over to Adam Kandar in Durban…

Durban

Adam greets the South Wind coming in at Durban today 7am 11 October 2024: Ok back in Durban we have a sneaky little pair of low pressures holding back the east today. Adam Kamdar is on the scene early and reports on an unruly ocean today.

But with plenty of potential for the weekend as indicators indicate low swells, low winds and sunny skies!

All you have to do is choose a beach!

Thank you Adam.

Sharks Board Upside Down at Isipingo

Who needs protecting from who?

Sharks Board Capsize at Isipingo in rough seas this morning – but who was swimming anyway?

With the recent great white shark tail washing up on the rocks at St Mike’s on the KZN South Coast recently, the Kwazulu Natal Sharks Board once again put themselves under the spotlight.

And today, they capsized an expensive vessel. With five souls on board. On a day when nobody should be in or on the water.

Anybody following the Sardine Reports would know that the swell is an unruly 2m plus. The wind is ugly as hell onshore. These two factors combined means that nobody should go out there. For anything. Least of all to mesh shark nets that kill dolphins, whales and great whites. Tigers too. Turtles. Rays. This is a very long list and you can read all about it on the Sardine News.

Sardines n Sighting Maps

It has been a fantastic sardine run this memorable 2024. And all the action has been logged right here on The Sardine News. This year’s map has been viewed 185,000 times and keeps growing.

Which led us to decide to keep the map live. And keep adding unique marine animal sightings and events. That occurs non-stop all year round. This year we started to log more whale and dolphin sightings. And we even had a shipwreck! And a freaking tornado!

These events will from now on be included in the Sardine News Sightings Map for 2024. And on the 1 January 2025, we shall start all over again.

Here are the links to existing and past Sardine Sighting Maps. Great for a windy day like today to research. With instructions to install The Sardine News right on your phone or desktop.

7am 9 Oct 2024 Nobody in or on the Ocean Today as the East churns the Sea to Mush by Adam Kamdar

East Wind Washing Machine for KZN 9 Oct 2024 7am

7am 9 Oct 2024 Nobody in or on the Ocean Today as the East churns the Sea to Mush by Adam Kamdar

7am 9 Oct 2024 Nobody in or on the Ocean Today as the East churns the Sea to Mush by Adam Kamdar: The east winds are not very good for the state of the ocean. Sure, if they just blow lightly and behave themselves then, yes, we can handle that. But when they get unruly and angry…like they are today, the sea becomes a very uncomfortable place to be.

Over to Adam who is on the spot…

And dangerous…

There is a strong groundswell running today. Featuring a powerful primary southwest swell and a secondary east bump. These combine to form formidable surf conditions to anyone who dares go near this particularly dangerous set of conditions.

Superpositioning of waves is when two troughs, or peaks, of a swell, combine. This combination can double the height of the wave at that moment. Making for some serious waves and deep holes. That you can disappear into.

‘The ocean is not always your friend’ – said Vloei (Boland Spearo)

These are wise words and so when the east is blowing a gale like it will today, and an unorganised and powerful swell is moving right in shallow, rather don’t go anywhere near those waves.

The good news is that eventually the winds will run out of high pressure and the low-pressure south winds will come and paint the ocean pretty again. This is forecast for Friday. Leaving us a darling KZN weekend ahead.

We still have a few units available at the Umzimkulu Marina (Sheppy) where the estuary gamefish season is in full swing. Contact Sean on +27793269671 or umzimkulu@gmail.com anytime to talk about getting stuck into the garrick, kingfish, kob, rock salmon, perch, grunter and more that are waiting for your live bait. This last weekend we had angler Angus Gibson bag a proper garrick right at the jetty. Full story on umzimkuluadrenalin.co.za.

Surfers Getting Wet Today But Its Clearing Fast by Adam Kamdar Durban Beachfront 7am 8 October 2024

Heads Up Display Surfers Getting Wet

Surfers Getting Wet Today But Its Clearing Fast by Adam Kamdar Durban Beachfront 7am 8 October 2024

Surfers Getting Wet Today But Its Clearing Fast by Adam Kamdar Durban Beachfront 7am 8 October 2024: Getting wet in the rain doesn’t work for some. But our readers love getting wet. Like the surfers out there in the rain. Loving life! There are ski-boats catching garrick off Blue Lagoon all morning today. And the divers, well let’s just say they are always wet!

Over to Adam Kamdar from the beach in Durban…

Thank you to Adam of Township Hyper for this report…

And for the cool Durban gallery this morning…

High Pressure

Fortunately for our sun worshippers, we are still in a prevailing high-pressure system sitting right along the entire coastline. We should clear up fast.

You might notice that we have been including a synoptic chart in our Heads Up Display on our daily video reports recently. If you can keep the image of the synoptic current in your head, you will be able to far more reliably see what’s coming.

It seems the weather forecasters recently have been resorting to manipulating forecasts in order to get more views (people are like 100x more inclined to click on bad news repeatedly). Then they change the model that they use (there are more than 6 commercially available weather models – all work slightly different and produce different results). Or more likely they simply choose the model that suits their revenue requirements for that week. Monitor this for yourselves, and then comment below after your have experienced it for a while.

There does seem to be some revenge being cooked up in the southwest way off of Cape Town. This is the time of the year that cold fronts can accelerate and join up with others. Check the synoptic for what is possibly headed our way. Should take about a week or so to hit Cape Town. And an other week to get to us.

Magical Monday South West Wind Conditions for Durban and KZN

KZN and Durban SW Conditions 7 October 2024 7am

Magical Monday South West Wind Conditions for Durban and KZN

Magical Monday South West Wind Conditions for Durban and KZN: The high-pressure induced northeast wind does its level best to trash the ocean each week. But the noble southwest low-pressure fights back and in turn paints the ocean pretty again. This endless cycle is at its most amplified right now. September and October are well known to be the windiest months of the year. And we are right in the thick of it!

Over to Adam as he unpacks the Durban and KZN day’s indicators for us…

Thank you Adam Kamdar of Township Hyper

Pop on over to Township Hyper’s Facebook page easily accessed right here. Which is where they run their special offers and promotions.

The south winds also warm and settle the ocean. And cleans it right up. So the spearos may be able to get in and take a look-see for us. The mid-south coast area like Kelso has been consistently clean recently. You can find out more about what has been lurking at The Master Watermen website at https://masterwatermen.co.za.

Now for some fishing…

Garrick

Luckily the garrick are here for the crazy conditions as they revel in the constantly changing weather and ocean patterns. They are at their keenest at the moment and just about any fishable point will have a garrick swimming past it today.

I was having a rest when next I heard the usual - "Sean!". I leapt from the couch and got down to the jetty just in time to help Angus get this trophy estuary garrick released.
I was having a rest yesterday morning when next I heard the usual jungle call around here – my name – “Sean!”. I leapt from the couch and got down to the jetty just in time to help Angus get this trophy estuary garrick released. He caught this completely on his own – netted the live mullet too! Was caught on his brand new MYDO Estuary Outfit that handled the job perfectly. Order yours right HERE.

You can learn more about fishing the Umzimkulu Estuary, and get in touch with Sean at https://umzimkuluestuary.co.za.

Kob

The kob are also partial to the turbulent conditions as they come right in shallow to hunt. There have been a lot of kob caught recently. Both using live mullet and plastic paddletail. From Umgeni to Cape Town, these fish are active right now.

7am 6 Oct 24 Suntanning Weather for KZN

Suntanning Weather for KZN 6 Oct 2024

7am 6 Oct 24 Suntanning Weather for KZN

7am 6 Oct 24 Suntanning Weather for KZN: Friday saw us go the whole nine yards and we got a special LATE Edition of The Sardine News out on YouTube. This was only the second time we have been able to do this. And man-oh-man was it a lot of fun!

You can watch that 5 in 1 video report by following this link or you can watch at the end of this article.

However…

Watching our results on YouTube, we started seeing an uptake in views of our OLD reports. We figured that this must be the new YouTube algorithm trying to push small creators. Like us! Then it dawned upon us too, that evidently our reports are not going out to these people when it matters. Our reports are done in real-time. From the beach to you. The reports carry relevant data and information on conditions for that moment.

Turn on Notifications

Notifications are the solution! But it means that you need to follow the link below. Which will take you to our YouTube Channel. Where you can turn notifications on. Select the little bell icon and choose ‘All’. This way, when we publish a report, you will be instantly notified and you will receive this information right on time. Instead of a few days late like YouTube thinks it is ok.

The other way of not missing out, is to install The Sardine News to your device. Allow those notifications and you will also receive notifications of each time we publish.

Another superb day has revealed itself for us here in with suntanning weather for KZN…over to Adam Kamdar on the Durban Golden Mile beachfront…

7am 6 Oct 24 Suntanning Weather for KZN by Adam Kamdar

The prevailing high-pressure system is ensuring we are gonna heat right up today with berg wind conditions being experienced already. The warm breeze signifies the impending arrival of a good old blow from the south. This is gonna hit tomorrow and will restore the ocean to its former glory.

And the 5 in 1 Report from the Friday Sardine News Roundup – which looks to becoming a regular full-length report…

5 in 1 Video Roundup

Scotties Beach Report 6 Oct 11am

By Cliff Bamber…

Thank you Cliff!

Garrick Report

National Garrick Day is right around the corner. We all got to be mindful of the limited population of our garrick. And not hammer them in their vulnerable state post-spawning.

Our garrick are not connected to the West Coast garrick. Nor the Mediteranean population. We are on our very own down here in South Africa and we best look after what we inherited.

The spawning all seems to happen at the same time. Nobody knows when this could be. But when it goes down the garrick go absolutely dilly for the following few days. Any idiot can catch a garrick at this particular time of the year. And this is where we need some restraint and be circumspect about killing in the name of killing.
