Monday More Fun Day for KZN Surfers by Adam Kamdar in Surf City

Monday More Fun Day for KZN Surfers by Adam Kamdar in Surf City

Monday More Fun Day for KZN Surfers by Adam Kamdar in Surf City: Welcome back to the sardine news. We have Adam Kamdar checking from what has turned out to be another surfing day in KZN and Durban in particular.

Over to Adam Kandar at North Beach in Surf City…

Durban

Monday More Fun Day for Surfers in KZN by Adam Kamdar on the Spot at North Beach in the famous Surf City that is Durban in South Africa.

Good time to be a surfer as the swell promises to build all day long. And reach a massive pulse tomorrow. Up to 5 meters at the crack of dawn! Obviously for this time of the year, the wind has agreed to join the party and will be cranking through at an enormous rate of knots.

SW

Gusts of up to 40 knots, which equates to like 80kmh, will punctuate the strong south-westerly tomorrow too. It looks to be at least 15 or 20 knots all day long. Only backing off on Tuesday night.

NE

The northeaster is plotting its big comeback from Wednesday morning and into Thursday all day. It’s gonna come charging in as early as it can, and will steadily build all day long reaching a maximum of about 15 knots in the afternoon.

With a low tide at 8:45am on Wednesday, that morning is going to produce the goods for any surfers who can make it out through that pounding surf. Before the NE makes it too bumpy.

And although Durban will get some SW juice that day, it will be nothing like what the south and north coasts will look like that morning. Lines to the horizon and light winds until the tide turns. As the tide turns from low to high water moving in – that’s about when the onshore NE will start to pick up. Before that, the tide will be draining fast and little offshores will spring up all over to compensate for the fast-receding water and therefore air pressure. As the tide drains, it sucks air off the land to create those regional and sporadic offshores, in the face of prevailing high pressure systems. The east ruins this quicksmart so you got to get in early as possible in these situations.

Fishing

The fishing has been excellent everywhere. Kob and garrick making up for most of the excitement. With the odd handsome brushed in between. We will see exactly what fish are about with the Bear Report coming in later today. This valuable information will be posted right here on The Sardine News at around 5pm.

Sardines n Sighting Maps

It has been a fantastic sardine run this memorable 2024. And all the action has been logged right here on The Sardine News. This year’s map has been viewed 185,000 times and keeps growing.

Which led us to decide to keep the map live. And keep adding unique marine animal sightings and events. That occurs non-stop all year round. This year we started to log more whale and dolphin sightings. And we even had a shipwreck! And a freaking tornado!

These events will from now on be included in the Sardine News Sightings Map for 2024. And on the 1 January 2025, we shall start all over again.

Here are the links to existing and past Sardine Sighting Maps. Great for a windy day like today to research. With instructions to install The Sardine News right on your phone or desktop.

Over to Adam Kandar in Durban…

Durban

Adam greets the South Wind coming in at Durban today 7am 11 October 2024: Ok back in Durban we have a sneaky little pair of low pressures holding back the east today. Adam Kamdar is on the scene early and reports on an unruly ocean today.

But with plenty of potential for the weekend as indicators indicate low swells, low winds and sunny skies!

All you have to do is choose a beach!

Sharks Board Upside Down at Isipingo

Who needs protecting from who?

Sharks Board Capsize at Isipingo in rough seas this morning – but who was swimming anyway?

With the recent great white shark tail washing up on the rocks at St Mike’s on the KZN South Coast recently, the Kwazulu Natal Sharks Board once again put themselves under the spotlight.

And today, they capsized an expensive vessel. With five souls on board. On a day when nobody should be in or on the water.

Anybody following the Sardine Reports would know that the swell is an unruly 2m plus. The wind is ugly as hell onshore. These two factors combined means that nobody should go out there. For anything. Least of all to mesh shark nets that kill dolphins, whales and great whites. Tigers too. Turtles. Rays. This is a very long list and you can read all about it on the Sardine News.

East vs West as the Winds Battle it Out in KZN

East vs West Winds in Full Swing

East vs West as the Winds Battle it Out in KZN

East vs West as the Winds Battle it Out in KZN

Adam Kamdar reports in from a blustery Durban morning down on the beach today. It is not a very inviting ocean out there at the moment as the east tries its level best to outblow the west that is coming tomorrow.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y_cgsdUm7s?rel=0

This is the windy month of August and it doesn’t really get better until we are well into spring.

If you also don’t want to get out there today, but you are out and about, pop into Township Hyper and check out the new kit. Loomis reels are on special. The Warrior and the Shockwave. Okuma have a bunch of new rods on the showroom floor. And there is the practical Mebao range of tackle storage solutions.

You can learn more and get in touch easily on the Township Hyper Facebook Page. Click HERE to get there!

Surfing

We have been mentioning the onslaught of perfect conditions and waves at Jeffreys Bay recently. And here is some hard evidence of the good times.

More surfing at https://brucifire.co.za.

Mozambique

Tofo, Inhambane: The big high pressure sitting over the east of South Africa pushed our long-awaited cold front right out to sea. Where it turned into a powerful onshore wind here instead of the offshore we need.

The divers are out there but surfing and fishing are gonna be tough over the next few days. Luckily we have this report from Duarte further up in Vilanculos, to keep busy with for now.

FishBazaruto.com had some dates to shift around resulting in the 22 to 28 November becoming available. This is peak season big momma fishing, follow the link to learn more.

Peak Season Dates Available – 22nd to 28th November 2024 – FishBazaruto.com

If you happen to be in Inhambane and more specifically Tofo…Wednesday evenings are Timbila Evenings!

Sardine Maps

Having intel to make the right decisions can save you hours and hours of frivolous  sardine hunting. We have taken great care to log the activity of each  sardine run since 2021. These records are available for anyone to look at.

If you study the maps year to year, you will see that right now we are only just in the middle of good  sardine conditions. And that in previous years catches were made right into the summer months.

Snoek Fever by Christal Botes

Christal Botes with Snoek Fever in Durban

Snoek Fever by Christal Botes

SNOEK FEVER: Durban KZN – After months of no spearfishing and having had to move back to JHB in 2022, I thought my diving days are finally over. Until November of 2023 when me and my hubby decided it’s time to catch a break. And we also had the Umhlanga Spearfishing Club End Year Function that was coming up so this would be the perfect time to go to Durban.

Arriving in Durban the weather caught us by surprise, it was raining almost every day. It wasn’t the rain that kept us from diving but the big swells that came through with the rain. I kept thinking to myself was I even going to get a chance to get in the water or was it all for nothing? So we decided to wait for the weather to clear and hopefully see if there were any diveable water around. And then one morning when the sun came out my hubby said to me it’s time to pack our dive gear and drive up coast to go look for diveable water hopefully the swell would’ve dropped too.

As we drove up coast all you could see was rivers that had popped and dirty water pouring into the ocean. We drove past Tinley Manor and the water started looking a lot better. We then went to this one isolated beach and my hubby said to me this is it. It’s now or never. As we were gearing up the tide started rising and you could see some clean water about 2 kilometers from the beach pushing in. We swam out past backline and the reefs were quiet, just the local small reef fishies hanging around. We then drifted with the current to this one ledge where the water colour changed to a blue 7m. This was as clean as it could get. We reef hooked on the ledge and waited.

Then suddenly my eyes caught a flash coming in from the side, at first I thought it was my hubby’s fins or something and then I saw it. A big shoal of Natal Snoek (Queen Mackerel) came cruising past me. I dove down and was amazed to see such a healthy shoal of fish, lined up my gun as best as I could and took a shot. As I surfaced I thought I had missed and then my reel went crazy, adrenaline kicked in and I knew I had Snoek Fever.

I slowly pulled the line giving the fish enough slack to tire itself out. It quickly got tired and was easy to pull in towards me. When I grabbed him by the gills and was so stoked to have finally shot my first Natal Snoek. I then euthanized it and put it on the stringer. We drifted for a couple more hours and another shoal passed, at this point I was already exhausted and ready to get out.

My hubby also got a snoek and he could see that I was getting tired so we decided to swim back to the beach. I could feel that I was unfit from not being able to dive in such a long time but it was all worth it in the end, this fish had been on my bucketlist for so long and I was overly grateful for it. As we got to our guesthouse I immediately filleted my fish and put it in the freezer.

When we got back home in JHB I knew that my kids were going to be so happy to have some fresh fish for dinner, so I prepared some battered fish for them and they ate all of it. I can’t wait to get back in Durban again.
