Yesterday: “When the fish aren’t here, the fish aren’t here”, goes Lawrence Wurznip, as the two of us lament at the lack of action, here at The Block, after endeavouring for weeks now, with lures. Frustration sets in.
Rumours have also been abounding regards a certain angler around here who has caught upwards of twenty Garrick this season, on lures, mainly that Ice Cream plug thing. It’s an easy lure to fish and casts a mile…but obviously, I am intent on catching fish on the Mydo’s which we make here in Port Shepstone.

So day after day, we have been meeting at odd times, and throwing our new 9ft long casters with coffee grinders and 20lb braid (the in thing), towards Chakas Rock, to no avail. Ok not completely. Lawrence had a chase on the Ice Cream plug nearer to Chakas, and I had a good fish on at The Sandspit (the beach on the north side of the Umzimkulu River), for a few seconds, on a Mydo SS Spoon (more about those coming up). I think my drag was too loose for the huge single I was fishing with.

I have a theory that when fishing blind like this (ie not sight fishing where you cast to visible fish on the surface), it takes 200 casts for an average fish, and 400 for a trophy. Well I, at this point, am on a good 200, since I got my new spinning outfit.

Today: I woke at 4am, got a coffee on the go, did some emails, and before long wound along the river road and towards the spot- “The Block” (is a large remnant of the old harbour wall, nicely positioned for live-baiting into the backline, at Port Shepstone, south side of the river mouth).

The wind was(is) howling and Chelsea (assistant editor Jack Russell) and I were the only fishers down there. We sat in the car and watched 6ft waves come peeling down the point – the spring high tide putting us at eye level with these spectacular swells. But in between sets, were the usual south swell lulls, and soon I just had to have a go. “It’s always those times you least expect it…”, I recall Lawrence telling me during one of our *fisholosophy discussions.

I can hardly see close up at all, and changing lures can be a ordeal especially in the twilight zone. And I had no leader with me so yesterday’s Mydo Luck Shot Mini #1 with a 6 inch MacCarthy white pearl jerk tail/bait was going to have go straight on. The westerley wind pumping from behind would help me get the One Ounce lure far enough to fish happily. It’s a very comfortable lure to fish as its nice and light, and you can slow troll it with the intermittent twitch, or crank it up to the top where it makes a plug like commotion but with much more realistic action. I would have liked to fish one of our new Mydo Tarpon SS Spoons, weighing in at 2 Oz and casting like a bullet. But on my third cast with the Mydo Luck Shot Mini #1, retrieving a tad faster as I was preparing for the lure’s surf in over the rocks, bang something took me properly! Beautiful surface strike a few metres in front of my disbelieving eyes! Garrick!

My adrenaline reserve exploded. “What to do?!?!” – so being a total newbie at rock ‘n surfing (ok it was a long time ago!), I did all the wrong things starting straight away! On the boat, we really work our fish. But with rock and surf fishing, it’s all totally different. The fish is always in charge. Anyway, the fish screamed off taking line easily –  I pulled back, at about 2kg’s of drag, and still tightened up more. The fish pulled back at me, and we had a huge argument right there and then as weed and sand-filled waves washed over the line wreaking havoc with my plans and leaving the fish with all the advantages. I pumped the drag some more, and eventually had the fish up against the wall, and after a few risky attempts, got the fish to surf a huge foamy right over the bricks and into that treacherous pool of whitewater at the inside base of The Block – another completely wrong thing to do, and now I had 50 metres of negotiating this fish through girders and bricks and concrete – all sharp-edged! And still on my own in the near dark.

But this fish was hooked well, we rig the Mydo Luck Shot Mini # 1 with a 7/0 stainless O’Shaugnessy for big fish, and as I negotiated the length of the wall back to the bridge, I was able to keep it’s head uppish and guide it all the way to the beach, where I ran in and got completely soaked, but pulled the fish out by it’s tail. With no-one to witness (ha ha). And because the river mouth is closed so we can’t launch, this Garrick came home to be enjoyed as all sorts of meals. By the family and guests at the Umzimkulu Marina. It is also my one and only garrick from the side.

When I got back to the car to show Chelsea, she wasn’t even interested, all curled up in my wetsuit on the back seat. It was still too dark for photos, but I snapped one, and then noticed, that the braid had let go at the lure. Amateur. And very lucky! You can cut any braid by dragging it back and forth on the edge of a brick and in no time it’s gone. It must have been the Garrick’s sharp little grabbing teeth that went through it like that.

As I left, one of the real Garrick catchers from around here – Vinod, came down the hill in his custom beach buggy with built-in live bait well, past the lighthouse and I couldn’t resist showing him my fish. And telling him the story. He laughed a lot and then advised me – next time – let the fish run away from the bricks and into the bay. Then holding the rod up high and keeping light tension, get yourself to the beach where you can handle the fish without the risk of the line touching the rocks. Vinod was very surprised that the fish made it to the beach at all this morning – and with no leader?! Thanks Vinod!

“We’re having a great time down here on the Umzimkulu River, as quiet as this August month gets. The river water is crystal palace and the river is teeming with fry – all shapes and sizes. You can also see prawns walking around on the bottom, and grunter have been tailing across the sandbank on the north side. The river valley is finally warming up and conditions for fishing the estuary are at a high. Live bait is everywhere, bring your cast net or yozuris, and some heavy tackle. Those big momma kob have to be curious enough to cruise in and out of the deepened mouth at night time…or even the daytime.

The waves out front, in the mouth have been absolutely flawless, but with no takers so far. It’s peeling down from way out back….where the sand has filled to connect to the inside bank – waves peeling for 100 metres or more! Clean water so you can see the stupid thing coming!

Shad are still dominating most anglers’ attention, filling the huge void left by the complete lack of sardines, who are apparently being harvested by the thousands of tonnes, off Cape St. Francis and adjacent ports. I mean, there are only so many available in a year, so if they get taken before they even get past Coffee Bay – then what’s the point? Obviously the fat cats that be put more value on a tonne of dead sardines, than on a tonne of tourists here to see the sardines alive?!

Luckily Garrick and Daga Salmon are also dead on time. Smaller kob in the 5 to 12 kg range are the rage right now…the bigger ones ought to show up soon enough…but the smallies are keeping people up very late (or early) as the fish readily devour a paddletail or jerkbait in the Witch’s hours.

Geelbek Salmon have gone on the boil off Durban, but our catches down south here have been limited to 8 or 10. Since the quota has come into play, that’s great fun for an hour or two, and we are back home. But we are having to travel far and wide searching for the elusive fish.”

Bonito Bolognese: Catch ‘n Cook series – this was written in 2014 – The Sardine News has been publishing since 1986.

But ok, if there are any fish out there plentiful enough to be harvested, it would be the many bonito. Eastern Little Tuna. Skipjack. Sarda Sarda. Kawa Kawa. And others. They are all tunas. And in fact, skipjack tuna is the guy you buy in a tin from the shops. A practice I have stopped completely. Every time you buy a tin of tuna, you are directly filling the diesel tanks of the hated trawlers and long-liners we see even plundering along our very own coastline.

Bonito Bolognaise is a super healthy version of your regular beef bolognese spaghetti meal.

Bleed, loin and grate/grind the bonito into mince form. A cheese grater does the job just fine. And removes most of the sinew efficiently. But a real mince maker if you have one…will save you some time and effort.

This is my simple campfire method. Since at the campsite is where and how we invented bonito bolognese. We had just sunk at Pomene. For real – the boat we had just purchased from a complete drunk for USD 1000 (sporting twin 115hp V4 Yamaha 2 Strokes) had some latent defects. The boat just couldn’t stay afloat for extended periods. Her name was Nikita, she sank right in the holding area on the point at Pomene. With me and Paul asleep in the cabin. We woke up in the early hours. Pitch dark and storming hard. Both soaking wet as the high tide filled the boat and our sleeping quarters.

We had travelled by sea from Tofo the day before. Wild sea. One motor spun a prop halfway. So we arrived in the dark. Sinking but not quite sunk. Yet. Paul and I took watch and slept on the mostly floating boat.

6 AM the next day- it was cold that eventful morning. Soooo cold. Mid-winter cold front and exposed on the beach. And we were soaked. And sunk. Paul and I escaped the sunk vessel and tried to make a fire on the beach. Our victims (read guests) – most of our friends from Tofo, had all scuttled the boat upon arrival in the dark the night before. And eagerly settled in the beach camp. About 200 metres from where the boat had just sunk.

Luckily with first light – Chad from Tofo was also awake and saw our predicament. He brought us coffee and helped to recover all the flotsam and jetson strewn about the beach. Once the tide had turned to go back out again, and we had anchored the sunk boat and put her in recovery position (on a steep piece of beach to drain her out again), we left our post and headed to the salvation of the beach camp. Camp was buzzing when we finally made it across the beach.

I stumbled into the kitchen area, found a spot under a table and made a little bed. And cleanly passed out. It was an exhausting evening and morning. Sinking is never fun. Paul found himself a spot somewhere too and we got some deserved shut-eye.

The boat was a big old Interceptor from Invader and somehow we had gotten 9 people on board. And a helluva lot of stuff. There was so much food. Cooler boxes. Crates. Bags. BUT! Someone had forgotten the 2kgs of mince we had brought along for our first big meal together. A spaghetti bolognese.

When I woke at about 11, the mince was a big issue. And that’s when it came to me! Grate the tuna! We had caught so many fish (including Chad’s first-ever sailfish) on the drive from Tofo to Pomene, that we had been filleting some of them along the way. And keeping some beautiful tuna loins for sushi or sashimi. This stuff was perfect. And the cheese grater made short work of the loins. Soon we had far more than 2kgs of mince. Which was a very good thing.

Because, out of all the hundreds of bonito bolognese’s I have made thus far, every single one has sold out. There has never, ever, been leftover bonito bolognese.

Bonito Bolognese Recipe

  1. Fry some onions a while…add the tuna mince about halfway to brown
  2. Tomatos etc…
  3. Garlic etc…

Done!

Big Meal

Making a huge bowl of gourmet bonito mince is my best plan. It fridges and freezes well, so you can make a whole bonito’s worth and stash it away for things like Spaghetti Bolognese, Mince on Toast, Samoosas and even Vetkoek!

Make a heap and live good!

It has been a fantastic sardine run this memorable 2024. And all the action has been logged right here on The Sardine News. This year’s map has been viewed 191,000 times and just keeps growing.

Which led us to decide to keep the map live. And keep adding unique marine animal sightings and events. That occurs non-stop all year round. To catch a tuna – with Brian Moulang

Brian Moulang, up from Port Elizabeth, booked a charter with us on the Niteshift, for some Yellow fin Tuna action. It was a long hard day, but eventually a tuna showed itself after the entire day and many, many miles. Starting on the backline catching livebait, we saw Lawrence Wursnip and John Collinson show off two over 30kg tuna, taken just as we got there…and so the struggle ensued. It even took a trip out to Protea Reef, where we found the usual, big sharks, and big current!

So back to the backline. Luckily the bottomfish reefs kept us entertained while we waited for that elusive tuna strike…when that live maasbanker went away it sounded like U2 cranking up!

Kingfish for Marc

Yep it’s him again. Swopping his speargun for a spinning stick, Marc shows us a nice yellowfin kingfish…Caranx Herberi. They get quite big, about 12kg’s the biggest seen around here, great fighters and quite eager to attack lures and baits.
Port Shepstone sits quietly in the background. The water looks like it has cleared up nicely on the south coast.
