Sardines and Conditions for KZN at 7am this wondrous 11 July 2024 morning by Adam Kamdar in Durban: . Adam Kamdar of Township Hyper Tackle delivers a classic morning report on the current Sardine and Conditions situation here in KZN, South Africa.

Over to Adam…

?Good morning, Durban. It’s 7:19 AM Thursday the 11th of July. The high tide coincided with the sunrise time this morning at around 7:00 AM and the next low tide will be just before 1:00 PM Wind Guru shows a settled day today. Uh, light winds, subtle seas, temperatures, uh, around 24 degrees. And the outlook for the next few days is pretty much the same with nicely settled seas.

Tides for fishing shows the wind speed at the moment from the northwest 11 kmph and the temperature is 16 degrees. Maximum expected today 27 degrees. That’s winter in Durban for you. And the atmospheric pressure is 1013 and rising. Wave net is showing a glimmer of reading for the sea temperature. I think there might be an intermittent feed from the thermometer out at sea, but it’s showing temperatures around 22 to 23 degrees.

Still too warm for the sardines to pop up. Next we’ll have the sunrise view. And this is the winter scene in Durban, a lovely sunny day. Um, as I mentioned, temperature is expected to reach 27 degrees today. It’s a lovely warm winter’s day in Durban.

I didn’t see any dolphins this morning. Didn’t see any shoals rising. So: let’s keep our fingers crossed those big shoals keep moving north and reach Durban soon. Have a gorgeous day and stay tuned to thesardine.co.za.

KZN Ocean Conditions at 7am 10 July 2024 by Adam Kamdar

KZN Ocean Conditions at 7am 10 July 2024 by Adam Kamdar

KZN Ocean Conditions at 7am 10 July 2024 by Adam Kamdar

KZN Ocean Conditions at 7am 10 July 2024 by Adam Kamdar: Cooler than crisp! But aside from the 12-degree air we were treated to yesterday, the ocean conditions are once again superfluous. Surfers are surfing. Paddlers and paddling. Fishermen fishing…etc.

7 am Durban

Paints a really pretty picture. Adam Kamdar of Township Hyper in Durban takes us through the conditions and prospects for today and the next few days. Things are decidedly sardine out there today.

Big south swell coming up from the Cape, threatening to muddy the clean waters. But the water temperatures are dropping all over the place and we may be in for another action-packed weekend of sardines.

Sardine Run 2024

This must be the longest sardine run on record as Kevin in Qora recently reported another substantial shoal, with the usual accompanyments of gannets and predators, on it’s merry way north.

You can watch that report right here on the Sardine New Channel, anytime.

Kevin is right at the far end of the Transkei so you can imagine the perilous journey that that shoal faces ahead of it. This journey can takle a week. Or a month. Depending on ocean and current conditions.

Sardine Map 2024

This map is where we log all the most relevant and confirmed sardine sightings through the run. With links to the video and photographic action. If you follow this map along the timeline at the left, you will be able to see exactly how the sardine run progresed this year so far.

You are then also able to look at the previous few years that we did this data collection. Links are below the Sardine Run 2024 map.

You can find the map right HERE.

Sardines netted at Amanzimtoti 7am 9 July by Adam Kamdar

Sardines at Amanzimtoti

Sardines netted at Amanzimtoti 7am 9 July by Adam Kamdar

Sardines netted at Amanzimtoti 7am 9 July by Adam Kamdar: seeing all that black smoke out over the ocean during this mornig’s sunrise reminds us that we are still in a fire-prone time of year. And these wayward winds are certainly going the required fanning.

Last nights fires were devastating in some regions.

Amanzimtoti

This has to have been the earliest net of the season so far. These guys were on the beach as the first of the sun’s rays started to warm the beach.

There is sure to be more netting going in the perfect KZN Winter conditions.

Let’s go over to Adam for our morning report right from the Durban Golden Mile…

Thank you Adam!

You might have seen Kevin in Qora’s report from yesterday, depicting even more sardines on their mery way up to KZN. Kevin reports thousands of gannets nailing a shoal that was a good 2 or 3 kilometres long. It was quite far out to sea and moving north past haste.

You can read that report right HERE.

HUGE Waves and HUGE Shoal of SARDINES by Kevin in Qora PM Report 8 July 2024

HUGE Waves and HUGE Shoal of SARDINES by Kevin in Qora PM Report 8 July 2024

HUGE Waves and HUGE Shoal of SARDINES by Kevin in Qora PM Report 8 July 2024

HUGE Waves and HUGE Shoal of SARDINES by Kevin in Qora PM Report 8 July 2024: a HUGE welcome back to Kevin in Qora who checks in today with amazing news…

THERE ARE MORE SARDINES COMING!

How’s it, everyone? This is Kevin at Qora Mouth. just north of Mazepa Bay in the southern Transkei. Well, we thought it was over. And I thought it was over. You haven’t heard from me in a couple of weeks because I was convinced that we were winding down on the sardine run and I’m sitting here on the 8th of July looking out to sea and there is a massive shoal.

Moving north. Thousands and thousands of gannets. This shoal stretch is about a two-kilometer stretch. It’s quite far out. It’s about three to four kilometers out, but it is moving north fairly fast. While I’ve been watching it, it’s moved already about, oh, about a kilometer, and that’s over a 10 minute period.

So obviously there’s a big south swell running. And a huge south swell is imminent from that cyclone off of the tip of Africa. So this shoal is going to actually get moving. I’m not really up to date with water temperatures up north of us, but I know down here by us, close in, it’s still pretty warm.

It’s about 22 degrees. But this shoal is a bit deeper, so maybe they found a colder patch. And let’s hope they make it to Port St. John’s, which is the first port of call. And that’s where we’ll get another positive confirmation of this. But I can definitely say that there’s something huge coming back up north. Which might be round number two.

It is only early July and this is probably the time that they should be arriving. So yeah, let’s keep fingers crossed and let’s hope this one makes it into KZN Waters. It’s not over till, um, yeah, till that lady sings. You know that lady. Anyway, chat to you guys later, and I’ll keep you updated as things happen my side.

Cheers.

THANK YOU KEVIN!

Water Temp Drop 7am on this chilly 8 July 2024

Water Temp Drop 7am this Chilly Monday 8 July 2024

Water Temp Drop 7am on this chilly 8 July 2024

Water Temp Drop 7am on this chilly 8 July 2024: big thanks to Adam for being up and at it for the arrival of this impressive cold front coming in strong from the south.

A radical water temperature is the big news today. Right down to 16 degrees Celsius. But this is right out at the buoy. The inshore water is still quite manageable at around 21.

There have been sightings of sardines in Port Edward this morning already. And netting boats are trying at Scottburgh. We will keep you updated right here all day today.

Berg Winds

Air temperatures are right up at this early KZN morning. As the first gusts of offshore winds prepare us for the big cold blow that is just around the corner. When the upper air here starts to move in the direction of the rotation of the impending front, it drops in altitude fast and it warms up. This is a Berg Wind. Not always toasty as today’s. And generally the warmer they are, the bigger the blow that is coming!

But tomorrow says east winds and conditions?!

So unless a big cold front does come through, we are in for these howling offshore winds all day long today!

Surfing Today

Obviously, the surf is cooking because it’s Monday. The Berg Winds predicted by the available weather models were put at up to 30 knots or so. I thought it was a typo or some other error. But these strong Berg Winds will paint an incredibly inviting ocean in the morning.

These are ultimate surfing conditions. And they normally don’t last long. But today the weather models say all day West winds!

Fishing

Well just about anybody could cast a spoon over the backline with this wind behind them. And with so many snoek and garrick around, this would be time well spent.

And once again, please shad fishermen, you guys need to be cleaning up after yourselves, right?

Tides

Tides are huge again today so be careful wherever and whenever you go near the ocean.

Gallery

These photographs were taken yesterday the 7 July 2024. Sardines were netted at Saints and at Shelley Base.

Sightings Map

Updated daily/hourly with every bona fide and useful sardine sighting each year. Beware of false sardine news.
