26 June 2023 – Where did the sardines go?

26 June 2023 Sardine News Report

26 June 2023 – Where did the sardines go?

26 June 2023 – Where did the sardines go? This is the big question after so much early action already experienced this year. It’s been an incredibly cool couple of weeks with sardines surprising us day in and day out.

Things started hot with GoDive getting us some incredibly cool underwater shots from the Port Alfred area. Soon Kevin in Qhora started his reports of sardine sightings. Then East London had that massive shoal decide to make a break for it. After being hammered mercilessly at Kaisers Beach, where they were stuck a few days. These guys then burned on through to Port St Johns where every shark and his dog were waiting for them. Carnage. Finally, the bigger shoals came through to back up the pilot shoals that were netted early. Nets went in at many places and the prices dropped fast.

But now they have seemingly disappeared.

I did a check yesterday from the high points at Port Shepstone and Umtentweni. You could see for miles it was so smooth and glassy. But there were no sardines. Until something caught my eye way out on the horizon. It was birds and predators. Smashing. I saw the same thing a few more times and have to deduce that that is where the fish are. 3km or more out to sea.

I sincerely hope they come back in soon. But in the meantime, I am sick and tired of sardines so The Sardine News is heading south to cover some other seriously interesting news. We will continue to update the map. But this week we will be down south!

Who knows what we might find still on its way?

24 June 2023 Sardine Updates in VIDEO

24 June 2023 Sardine Updates in VIDEO: sardine news as it happens…and we have a video update of today’s news today! Plus a quick trip to Port St Johns to check out a new YouTube Channel.

24 June 2023 Sardine Updates

Starting with this inviting photo by Adam Kamdar in Durban. Which reveals a completely different ocean this morning. It’s not perfect for anything. But the swell has dropped off.

The water temperature here on the southern Kwazulu Natal coast is a mildly warm 22 degrees Celsius. Which is up from the prime 19 degrees Celsius that sardines really like.

Todays Forecast

There are very many sardines out there. Stretched between Port Edward and Durban. If you set yourself up in Scottburgh or so – you are sure to bump in some sardine action. The further south you go, the more chance you will have because you are covering more ground. And more time.

Port Edward, Glenmore, Ramsgate, Margate…

Port Edward, Glenmore, Ramsgate, Margate…

Port Edward, Glenmore, Ramsgate, Margate…there are sardines everywhere. But, there is a really big shoal moving up north right now. It has already moved a lot and is heading to Durban. Where a net might have gone in this morning…there are mixed reports about that situation.

One thing is for sure though, jump in your car and head south into the sardine front to head them off. Waves are huge though, but with the tide dropping again, the sards might get caught on the inside all over again. Just like at Umtentweni a few days back. Places like Glenmore, Margate and Ski-Boat Bay in Ramsgate have good setups for this to happen.

10 AM – Sardines netted in Durban now (FALSE)

10 AM -Sardines netted in Durban now: it was doubly confirmed that two nets were pulled in the protection of Durban Bay a half an hour ago.

But the nets never actually went in…all apologies.

23 June 2023 6 AM Sardine plans for the weekend

23 June 2023 6 AM Sardine plans for the weekend

23 June 2023 6AM Sardine plans for the weekend: it’s Friday! And the waters here off the coast of southern Kwazulu Natal are laden with sardines. By the shoal! What their plans are for the weekend though, is anyone’s guess.

To get yourself some fresh sardines, start early. Head down to Scottburgh or so. And start scanning. You can rely on the netters to get some for you. Just tag along behind them. At about R50 bucks a dozen. Or you can take your washing basket and go get some yourself. There are dangers. Sharks are wild right now and are seemingly just behaving on reaction. Storm surges from the recent swell also present a problem when wading in the shallows.

Another danger are the sharks in the carpark. Many people have been ripped off by leaving fishing rods or other valuables in their cars. When completely distracted and chasing sardines down on the water’s edge. Criminals are watching and they know fully how to take advantage of sardine fever.

Other than that it all looks to be a fantastic sardine weekend. You can watch yesterday’s video roundup and forecast right here…
