5 Video Reports:Clear Skies are Coming Back by Adam Kamdar in Dbn 30 September 2024

6am REPORT Clear Skies are Coming Back by Adam Kamdar in Dbn 30 September 2024: The difference in weather between Durban and Port Shepstone today is fascinating. Durban has been raining Natal proper since earlier. And year here in Port Shepstone, it’s sunny skies and Chevrolet. With some drizzle making for a proverbial monkey’s wedding.

The surf is way up down here on the KZN Lower South Coast. Durban’s south coast must be pounding with the almost spring low tide today. And seeing from Adams’s report this early morning, the surf in Durban town between the piers is pretty much on. Not very big since it is so tucked away from the SW swells running at 3m or more out at sea.

Over to Adam in Durban…

Thank you Adam!

Port Shepstone

Fishing and Surfing Report from The Sandspit in Port Shepstone…

Ok it is not quite the surfing emergency that we normally get excited about. And we are not in mid-winter anymore. But any waves that resemble waves like today need to be taken note of.

Durban seems to be a good call as some of the SSW swell curves around the harbour piers and makes it into the town beaches. Where the SW is almost directly offshore and really cleans the swell up. Unfortunaly the swell loses a lot of size as it travels around the corner and tries to get in.

Down south it is quite mean but the usual point breaks should be an absolute treat if the wind can hold a slightly offshore angle like it has been doing all morning.

Fishing

There definitely will be good fishing somewhere today and since it is the last day of shad season, anyone who can should be out there right now. There are some huge gaps and channels at the main spots.

Scottburgh

Last Holiday Beach Report from Scottburgh 30 September 2024 by Cliff Bamber who is there! Cliff Bamber runs us through conditions and prospects for today at Scottburgh Beach. Where he reports onshore and cold conditions. A stark difference to here in Port Shepstone where the monkeys wedding is proceeding as planned.

Thank you Cliff!

JBay

Well there certainly is motion in the ocean happening down in freezing cold JBay as a new system comes barreling in.

Sardines n Sighting Maps

It has been a fantastic  sardine run this memorable 2024. And all the action has been logged right here on The Sardine News. This year’s map has been viewed 185,000 times and keeps growing.

Which led us to decide to keep the map live. And keep adding unique marine animal sightings and events. That occurs non-stop all year round. This year we started to log more whale and dolphin sightings. And we even had a shipwreck! And a freaking tornado!

These events will from now on be included in the Sardine News Sightings Map for 2024. And on the 1 January 2025, we shall start all over again.

Here are the links to existing and past Sardine Sighting Maps. Great for chilly day like today to research. With instructions to install The Sardine News right on your phone or desktop.

Baby Oyster Catchers have hatched in Part 4 of the JBay Boardwalk Saga

Which Oyster Catchers Path don't you get

Baby Oyster Catchers have hatched in Part 4 of the JBay Boardwalk Saga

Baby Oyster Catchers have hatched in Part 4 of the JBay Boardwalk Saga.

Enjoy the video…

Part 1

“Jislaik daar is eiers hierso!”

When Brucifire arrived on the scene of the angry and disturbed mama Oyster Catcher, the workers building the all-new boardwalk down the beach in Jeffreys Bay, had the sense to surround the two eggs, with rocks. It was a beautiful display of respect for the Oyster Catcher family-to-be.

It would have been far more prudent however, if the people paying for the boardwalk, would have already scouted the area for nesting birds. And any other natural occurrences that should never be messed with.

Part 2

“People teaching people how to be people.”

That’s just the nicest translation, or adaptation of the African word Ubuntu. And Bruce holds back his frustration fairly well as people…people…just walk right on by the birds nest.

Some with dogs!

He tries to educate them. But ignorance prevails…

Part 3

“Haolis”.

Mama Oyster Catcher is still on the job, even though so many disrespectful people – completely oblivious to nature, just come too close.

Construction on the boardwalk has seemingly come to a halt at this point in the saga.

Part 4

“Twins!”

We have a set of twin baby Oyster Catchers. Brucifire got a photo in from far off. As he did not want to disturb our already ruffled mama.

They are so cute. And vulnerable as they got to work their way from beach life to rock life. Where they will be relatively safe from their main predator.

Dogs!

Bruce reports that this problem is far and wide. Especially prevalent down south. Where dead baby chicks – killed by dogs, are found too often.

Please keep your dogs on a leash or go to “Dog Beach”, down the way.

We want a pleasant Part 5 when we celebrate the chicks coming of a week’s age.

Shaun Tomson Surfs into SA Hall of Fame

Shaun Tomson from South Africa - new inductee into the South African Hall of Fame, ripping JBay the way we all know him

Shaun Tomson Surfs into SA Hall of Fame

By Olivia Jones Communications. Ballito, KwaDukuza, KwaZulu-Natal. Shaun Tomson rode the crest of his career wave earlier this week, when he was honoured with an induction into the elite South African Hall of Fame, the highest accolade that any South African sports person or performing artist can receive.

Listed among the top ten surfers of the century, the former Durbanite was the 1977 World Surfing Champion and six times winner of the Gunston 500 in Durban. Apart from surfing, Shaun Tomson is also a renowned author, businessman, environmentalist and motivational speaker.

The South African Hall of Fame celebrates great achievements by extraordinary South Africans excelling in their field, who inspire and empower the youth to holistically reach their full potential. An individual’s integrity, sportsmanship and character are also taken into account.

“The surfboard became a mere vehicle for an incredible human being, Shaun Tomson, to epitomise his passion and perseverance, and then he returned to create a message of hope,” said Johnny Burger, Chairman of the South African Hall of Fame.

“We firmly believe that character supersedes talent and that one human being, no matter how big or small can make an enormous impact. The biggest sporting legend that has ever walked South Africa, besides Gary Player, is Shaun Tomson. We honour you, we respect you and we thank you for leaving something bigger and longer-lasting behind, than just yourself, and that is a true legacy,” said Burger, before handing Tomson his accolade.

On accepting his newest award, Tomson, now California based, said “I am so humbled and so honoured to receive this award from my homeland. I know that I am going to do my homeland proud and spend more time here. What you will, you will become!”

Tomson’s powerful words of inspiration come from his book The Code: The Power of I Will, where he illustrates how people, especially the youth can change their lives in just twelve steps, each beginning with “I will…”.

Shaun Tomson has spent the past few weeks motivating local schools and organisations through the Positive Wave Tour as part of the 50th edition of the world’s longest running professional surfing event, the Ballito Pro presented by Billabong in KwaZulu-Natal

Such is his affinity with the local youth that it has earned him the affectionate nickname ‘Baba Tom’. Wiseman Cele, Manager of New Development for KwaDukuza Municipality said, “The youth that Shaun has interacted with in the last few days have been so greatly impacted by his friendliness, positive energy and accommodative manner, that they started referring to him as Baba Tom. He has become like a father-figure to them.”

“Alchemy is the transference of metals from one state to another  which occurs through heat or pressure. Shaun Tomson has to be celebrated not for his achievements, but for his ability to transfer his own pain and transcend every single negative thing that has happened to him to become the person that he is today, an alchemist,” said former South African Champion surfer Greg Swart.

Tomson recently spent an afternoon with Dr. Albertina Luthuli, daughter of anti-apartheid struggle icon, Nkosi Albert Luthuli, where the two philanthropists shared their sentiments on racism, sports, politics and their common love, South Africa.

Tomson’s visit to South Africa culminates with him spending 67-minutes at the Lethithemba Secondary School for the centenary celebrations of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July #LiveTheLegacy.

Surfers Pay Tribute to Jack O’Neill In JBay Memorial Paddle Out

Surfers Pay Tribute to Jack O’Neill In JBay Memorial Paddle Out

Lower Point, JBay – Championship Tour surfer Jordy Smith and friends joined locals and other surfers from all over the country for a Memorial Paddle Out in honour of Jack O’Neill at Lower Point yesterday morning.

For the man who pioneered the wetsuit, it was fitting that the weather had arrived in JBay, and it was a freezing, cloudless morning at Lower Point. Surfers were trussed up in their best rubber as they launched through the keyhole into the fresh southwest wind blowing up the point, for the paddle out.

Memorial Paddle Outs were staged worldwide, with Jack’s hometown Santa Cruz leading the proceedings. Over 2500 people joined the celebration there in what was the biggest memorial celebration the surfing world has seen to date. People were on surfboards, in boats in the water, and lining the cliff, as 1977 Surfing World Champion Shaun Tomson from South Africa made a speech honouring the man.

In JBay, Jordy Smith led the proceedings. “Jack O’Neill was such a visionary and a pioneer,” said Jordy. “Apart from wetsuits and all he did there, he was a forward thinker on so many different aspects of our surfing life. I wouldn’t be able to surf in Cape Town if it wasn’t for him. He opened so many doors for people to be able to enjoy the ocean and it’s something that we can be grateful for.”

Jordy had the pleasure of hanging out with the man a few years ago.

“I remember hanging out with him at his house in Santa Cruz a few years ago,” said Jordy. “After a surf he asked me what the water was like. I told him that it wasn’t too bad, not too cold and he smiled and said to me, ‘you’re welcome.’ That’s all he said. It was the craziest thing. It was so funny, and something I’ll remember forever.”

Jordy paddled out into the small surf at Lower Point with a wreath, and surfers followed him out and joined the circle. It was a fitting tribute to the man who pioneered the wetsuit and did so much more for the sport.

“It was very heart-warming to see the locals, the groms and everyone else turn out for the paddle out,” said O’Neill South Africa’s Paul Canning. “O’Neill South Africa would like to thank everyone who came down to pay tribute to Jack.”

About O’Neill:

O’Neill, the original California surf, snow and youth lifestyle brand, was founded in 1952 when a young man named Jack O’Neill took his unstoppable passion for surfing and used it to beat Mother Nature at her own game. Pioneering the world’s first neoprene wetsuit, Jack had successfully found a way to extend his surf sessions in the bone-chilling breaks of Northern California. He opened up the garage doors to his first surf shop in Santa Cruz soon after.

While many things have changed since those humble beginnings, Jack’s initial vision of producing functional and innovative board riding products continues to lie at the core of everything the company does. O’Neill’s core values – innovation in style and technology – have seen the brand devote itself wholeheartedly to the evolution of the action sports lifestyle.  From the first ever neoprene wetsuit and surf leash, to the world’s first stitchless boardshorts and range of groundbreaking wearable electronics, O’Neill’s progressive spirit will always drive the company forward.  For more information, please visit www.oneill.com
