Paradise conditions being experienced down on the KZN South Coast. Its that beautiful time of our year again. The wind calms down. The sun comes up earlier. The water stays clean.

And the Garrick are here!

As noted by Darrell Hattingh who never misses out. Living smack bang in the middle of the action on the KZN south coast, Darrell has been biding his time this year, waiting for that bus Garrick to swim around the corner.

KZN South Coast: Darrell Hattingh gets his handful of garrick each year. Spends many hours in the water on the hunt for them, you got put in the hard yards to get a fish like this bomber.

And here it is! Not sure of the exact weight but it sure looks 20 to me. The season has been characteristic of bigger Garrick. Some absolute beauts have been coming out on rod and reel too.

Its almost National Garrick Day, but we got to take care of the Garrick at this their most vulnerable time. Just don’t allow anyone around you to take the piss and take too many. Even though the bag limit allows two Garrick, one is more than enough.

There are now more photos doing the round’s on Facebook, of the senseless slaughter that goes on in the Transkei. This time two idiots were photographed posing with a whole shoal of baby Garrick.

Jason Heyne checks in with the good news that the winter gamefish are upon us. Winter gamefish action means big fish, so be on the lookout for your trophy daga salmon or couta. – Xona

Besides the weekend the diving conditions this week have been below average. Big daga salmon are around with big winter couta making an arrival. There was some sardine netting this week but nothing like last week. Saturday a light north wind blows switching to a moderate south West late in the day and the swell runs at 1.2m. Sunday a moderate south West blows with a 2m swell running. So Saturday is go day for a dive. As always dive safe and straight spears

Garrick season with GT Adventures, based on the beaches of the fish fantastic KZN North Coast – is on right now! The garrick stick around right into November, with the main bite going on right now.

It’s been consistent and spread out this year, as in there were no real days so far, where the garrick all went mad at the same time! Whenever this happens, anyone with a mullet can get a garrick. Resulting in many, many fish being taken in one day.

That’s not garrick fishing!

Garrick season extends from winter through spring. April til November really. But they don't always obey the rules. Sometimes they do holidays out of season too.

Kobbies in the Cape

Andrew von Biljon enjoyed some fishing time down in the Cape recently, and lucked into a fun run of kobbies, in most of the estuaries he and his mates fished.

They also got out to sea and managed a couple of beautiful baby black steenbras, which they returned healthy in the shallow waters.

All you need is a fishing mate or two, a little boat, a 4×4 – and this coast is your kingdom.

From garrick, er, leervis (learning fish?!), through all the kob species, the shad, the grunter – there is just so much for you to chase around between Cape Town and Durban. Many estuaries are quite safely, and legally navigeable, and accommodation options are endless.

“The ever reliable Jason Heyne reports in weekly with a round up of KZN spearfishing news…this week is no different, some great catches and good photos, thank you Jason!”

Diving this week has been on and off with early starts required due to the north east picking up every day and this weekend will be no exception. The North East will steadily pick up Saturday and Sunday with the surf picking up and obliterating the inshore come Sunday. Best bet for a dive is early Saturday morning through till mid day Saturday. The best viz has been in and around the middle south coast. Garrick are returning now in shoals so stick to the shallows for a while to bag one. DUC Garrick comp is on tomorrow no weigh in after 4. Guys and gals please be careful where you park your vehicle on the north coast as cars are being stolen and broken into. Try not to stash your keys. As always dive safe and straight spears.
