Fishing Mozambique: Durban to Maputo to Inhaca Island waters in no time flat

Fishing Mozambique: The easiest way to distinguish between the two is that the Blue Marlin can fold it's pectoral fins right up against the marlins body, much like a yellowfin tuna, while the Black's pectorals always stick out...(c) Duarte Rato

Fishing Mozambique: Durban to Maputo to Inhaca Island waters in no time flat

Fishing Mozambique: The new bridge over Maputo Bay is spectacular. And features all sorts of claims like being the biggest suspension bridge in the entire southern hemisphere?! But the biggest thing for us, is that from Durban, you are straight into Mozambique and into Maputo, avoiding the old Swaziland route completely.

The border at Kosi Bay is small and reasonably not busy. The tar road connects from the South African tar to the new Maputo side road now too. 2WD all the way (not to Ponto yet though). It’s another spectacular feat as the road takes you through a game park and animals are all over – just like travelling in Botswana.

The elephant reserve is well stocked with elephant. Some are known to be in a bad mood from wartime still and many encounters have been reported. So, keep your distance if you bump into one or two.

You can either turn right at this point, which will take you meandering through ancient Africa in your strictly 4WD vehicle, to the mythical Santa Maria. Another contender for best of Mozambique, Santa Maria offers it all, even surfing if you have a boat to get to the breaks with.

BUT. It’s the fishing at this time of the year that is most exciting. Blue marlin just love the deep water out behind Inhaca Island. And it’s not far at all, if you launch from Inhaca or Santa Maria. Striped marlin and black marlin also frequent the attractive underwater features out there, sailfish too, but it’s the big Blue’s that we are after in February and March each year.

Captain Duarte Rato is down there right now, preparing for the action.

The following video is kind of what started it all. This one being of a 1000lb Blue, Mozambique’s possible first, and definitely Inhaca’s first grander blue. It was caught by Duarte and crew (angler Carl Jankowitz), way back in 2015, after Duarte insisted they would find a big blue in those waters. Which he certainly did! Unfortunately the fish tail wrapped itself and the crew were unable to revive her enough for a good release.

You can get in touch with Duarte via his highly entertaining and informative website – http://fishbazaruto.com, where Duarte keeps a log of each and every trip he does.

If Duarte is busy, drop us a line…we have some very nice boats lined up and ready to go. We also can arrange accommodation on Inhaca Island or at Santa Maria.

There is a helluva lot to do between Inhaca Island and Santa Maria. Spinning from the beach is excellent. You can chuck a bait right from the beach bars. Snorkelling is world class. Fun for everyone everyday!

Pop me an email on umzimkulu@gmail.com or WhatsApp +27 79 326 9671, anytime, and we can work something out. With self-drive Durban to Maputo, now being an option, in 2wd, and a few hours lopped off the journey, one of the main barriers to fishing Mozambique has been well and truly conquered, for Durbanites!

Cape Verde Blue Marlin Fishing 2017 – part 1

And here is Part 2, which features a couple of photos that will haunt you for the whole of today. My favourite being the absolutely beautiful looking and performing white marlin they got into, whilst chasing blues.

Cape Verde Blue Marlin Fishing 2017 – part 2

Unbelievably, Duarte is now in Madeira where he has already picked a fight with one 550 pounder blue. His angler Peter Bristow did the hard work for a one on one release on their first day out. They are fishing RIGHT NOW, as I write this!

Stay tuned for further updates – there is still an instalment three coming from Cape Verde. And you can expect to see some photos, sometimes straight from the boat, from Madeira waters (signal dependent) popping up all over Facebook.

Where you can read many years’ worth of journals by Duarte, since 2011 in fact. Each and every trip. There is also a video section which has started growing nicely – some video produced by Duarte and The Sardine Team, and others chosen by Duarte off the web, as relevant.

After Madeira, Duarte ships back to family and Bazaruto…where those eager marlin have started congregating already! Get in touch if you want to catch a grander too!

PARTING SHOT – maybe you haven’t seen this cool video Duarte shot from underwater, as they release a handsome blue marlin carefully and successfully. About two weeks ago…hardcore stuff man!

Marlin on a Coffee Grinder

Carl Jankowitz gets stuck in with his stella coffee grinder

Marlin on a Coffee Grinder

Carl Jankowitz, fishing with Captain Duarte Rato out off Cape Verde, really wanted a marlin on a coffee grinder. Well, not just any coffee grinder – his trusty Stella. Which you can also use to winch your boat up onto your trailer after fishing, if you need to!

And so, the reel filled with some high powered braid, and attached to a solid jigging type stick – the team proceeded to raise and bait a hot tempered blue marlin or two. Resulting in one very good release, as the Stella and Carl were able to put the required amount of drag and pressure.

You can read the full story on over at http://fishbazaruto.com where updates from Duarte’s fishing adventures are posted. And bget in touch there if you want in on the marlin action, as Duarte follows them around the world – Cape Verde, Ascension Isles, Great Barrier Reef, Madeira, and of course, his favourite – Bazaruto.

And check this video out of how the guys in Cape Verde release their marlin…

The show moves back to Bazaruto in September, and there are a few slots still available. Bazaruto has long been the favourite for producing new world record sized black marlin – the current IGFA record by Alfred Glassel was caught in Cabo Blanco over half a century ago…1560 lbs!

Very sad Blue Marlin mystery solved

Blue Marlin Mystery

Very sad Blue Marlin mystery solved

A huge Blue Marlin was reported last week, but enthusiasm levels about it, were not that high.

Then we found out the truth.

The fish was killed, and left out there to be eaten by sharks. KZN North Coast…

It would have weighed 1245 pounds or so, according to its measurements, but I will let Captain Duarte Rato tell the story rather…

“But, the fish that has really made headlines this past week was an estimated Grander Blue released by Bully de Ricqueberg aboard the 21ft Eye-Tie with Roberto Fierro at the wheel. There as only been two Grander Blue Marlin caught in South Africa (and no Black), both of which were weighted. Due to some very odd laws this fish that arrived at the boat dead, could not be boated and had to be discarded.  A real shame has it measured an impressive 148´´(376 cm) by 82´´ (208 cm) with a 24´´(61 cm) tail. This measurements put the fish at 1,245 lbs. If correct it would have beaten the SA record by a long haul.

Speaking to some mates of mine in SA to understand why they could not boat the dead fish it seems that being part of the Isimangaliso one can only take out a billfish if fishing the area outside a tournament (as long as follow some national regulations). However, if fishing a tournament, as it was the case, all billfish have to be released without exception, failing of which could lead to heavy fines and banning of individuals and organizers”

So there it is…

A very, very sad Blue Marlin tail (tale).

Blue Marlin Bazaruto

Blue Marlin Bazaruto. The Sardine News Travel Agency can get you out there

Blue Marlin Bazaruto

Blue Marlin Bazaruto action has been on the rise year after year…according to Captain Duarte Rato. And Duarte is being supported by many other regular marlin chasers up and down the East Coast of Africa. And even down into the Cape.

Duarte fishes out of Vilankulos and Bazaruto each season – and has noted a rise in both the size and frequency of the blue marlin being encountered, especially this time of the year. It’s weird how each billfish species seems to have their own month or so, with which to frequent a given area.

It’s the Striped Marlin who next move in shallow to terrorise shoals of unsuspecting baitfish congregations on our East Coast of Africa. Who invites them and how you get on the invite list is still a mystery!

Check out the full story on http://fishbazaruto.com. Click on Captain’s Log and read the latest stories Duarte has posted (he documents each and every trip he takes), right back to 2010!

Cheers Duarte, for getting that really compilation of pics and facts together.

Keep it coming Captain!
