Marlin on a Coffee Grinder

Carl Jankowitz gets stuck in with his stella coffee grinder

Marlin on a Coffee Grinder

Carl Jankowitz, fishing with Captain Duarte Rato out off Cape Verde, really wanted a marlin on a coffee grinder. Well, not just any coffee grinder – his trusty Stella. Which you can also use to winch your boat up onto your trailer after fishing, if you need to!

And so, the reel filled with some high powered braid, and attached to a solid jigging type stick – the team proceeded to raise and bait a hot tempered blue marlin or two. Resulting in one very good release, as the Stella and Carl were able to put the required amount of drag and pressure.

You can read the full story on over at http://fishbazaruto.com where updates from Duarte’s fishing adventures are posted. And bget in touch there if you want in on the marlin action, as Duarte follows them around the world – Cape Verde, Ascension Isles, Great Barrier Reef, Madeira, and of course, his favourite – Bazaruto.

And check this video out of how the guys in Cape Verde release their marlin…

The show moves back to Bazaruto in September, and there are a few slots still available. Bazaruto has long been the favourite for producing new world record sized black marlin – the current IGFA record by Alfred Glassel was caught in Cabo Blanco over half a century ago…1560 lbs!

Radical new IGFA rules

New IGFA Rules

Radical new IGFA rules

The new IGFA rules published recently include some long overdue and revolutionary amendments.

The main one to me, is that you are now allowed to tie your top line ie the line class you are fishing, to your backing, no matter what backing!
There is a minimum stipulated length of top line required, of…5 m! Yes, five metres!

This means that when you break off on a fish, only the lighter top line will still be attached to it as it swims off. A minimal impediment compared to being stuck dragging 200m plus nylon. A very cool, and commendable change.

It obviously makes for using a lot less line – you can change line classes more efficiently and quickly. So much less waste and line pollution.

Another cool change, is that you are allowed to assist an angler who is fighting a fish – promoting safety. No assistance is allowed in pulling the fish in, but someone can hold on to you when things get crazy rough!

IGFA Rules
Captain Duarte Rato on a black that went 650lb, needs no assistance on this flat day. But if things get wild, the new IGFA rules allow for your crew mate to hold on to you, and keep you safe and in the boat.

The Great Barrier Reef by Captain Duarte Rato

It’s a dream for many of us to visit The Great Barrier Reef and chase the legendary huge marlin the place is famous for. Well, Captain Duarte Rato was over in Oz lately and managed some amazing figures for fish.

Enjoy the gallery and the good read – by Duarte on location near Cooktown.

Duarte travels the oceans with his lucky clients, to all the marlin corners of the globe. Including but not limited to The Azores, Madeira, The Ascension Islands…and now The Great Barrier Reef.

In this two part series, Duarte relates in detail, each days fishing. The tactics and techniques, the encounters, the tackle – and the areas they fished in.

Part 1 is here

And part two below…enjoy!

From BAZARUTO to the GBR / Nov 2016 – Part II

Based in Vilanculos, the closest town to the fabled island of Bazaruto, Duarte has been taking charters for decades. He grew up in these waters and knows the Bazaruto Archipelago backwards.

Duarte focuses on grander marlin, but along the way many fish are caught and most released. Check out his website on http://fishbazaruto.com to get in touch.

The website is also features The Captain’s Blog – a full record of every trip Duarte has been on, with incredible photos to compliment the entertaining fishing reports.

Going back years it becomes clear why Duarte delivers such good results.

Pop goes the Tuna: Ascension Island Popper Madness

Yellowfin Tuna

Pop goes the Tuna: Ascension Island Popper Madness

A peek into the amazing life of Captain Duarte Rato as he and his guests torture the yellowfin tuna right off Ascension Island. As you can see clearly in the video, this action is really shallow – you can see the bottom right where the poppers are being hammered to pieces by the nonstop yellowfin.

Captain Duarte Rato can be found all over the globe – wherever the BIG fish are, depending on the seasons. He can be contacted via his website http://fishbazaruto.com, where you can also check out the FishBazaruto playlist – featuring a selection of video starring Duarte or his mates.

The playlist is growing steadily, you can check it all out by following this link to http://fishbazaruto.com/media/video/

Spending time with Captain Duarte Rato

Spending time with Captain Duarte Rato

Tofo has of recent been playing host to Dario, Duarte jnr and Greta – the enthusiastic young family of Captain Duarte Rato, along with Duarte, as they spend some quality time together. Each season he does up at Bazaruto, off Vilancoulos, Duarte leaves the archipilego where he has been coaching the marlin there for decades, to visit Tofo for a week.
We have been bumping into them all over town and the beach, culminating in a visit at their cabin, during feeding time in the early evening.
“He only eats fish! Give him anything else and he just looks at it?!”, exclaims Duarte as he finely chops up a juicy chunk of couta fillet.
Greta is preparing the meal of healthy beans and local vegetables. The couta fillet is to flavour it all with fresh fish. Dario who is almost one, and Duarte jnr, 3, encourage her eagerly.
Soon we’re able to talk lures, and I show him through the original Mydo range, and then the new stuff. Out of the blue, Duarte drops the biggest marketing bombshell I have ever dreamed of.
” Hey I got my first billfish on a Mydo…a sailfish, when I was 16.”
I nearly fainted as the enormity of his statement set in. Africa’s most successful marlin fishermen got his first billfish on a Mydo #2 Baitswimmer.
I piled more lures into his lucky packet. All the Baitswimmer range up to the 4.5 weighing in at a healthy 222g – gets big baits down real deep. The Luck Shots for high speed deep trolling and jigging or even just drifting. The 2 sizes in the Luck Shot Mini, for casting and cranking. And then the newly developed (from the original Mydo spoons), the SS Spoon range. For casting, cranking and jigging.

I give a lot of lures out in this way, and there are just a few things that with Duarte, I am sure of. First, I will get the photos. And second…he will use every last one of them.
Obrigado Amigo!

Getting big baits down deep for big fish. Start posted for what comes up on the end of the line when captain Duarte Rato reports back.
