7am on 2 Oct 24 Beach Day in KZN by Adam Kamdar in Durban

7am on 2 Oct 24 Beach Day in KZN by Adam Kamdar in Durban: A strong and intent high-pressure system has moved over the country and is pushing those low-pressure systems coming in from the south right out to sea. This means sunny skies and clear days for a few days throughout South Africa. Well into and past the weekend. Finally, we have a decent weather break.

Today seems to be unfolding quite chilly though what with the snow in the Eastern Cape cooling the southwest winds. That here in Sheppy are up to a goodly 15 knots or more. A far cry from the forecaster’s 6 to 8 knots. Right now we may be gusting 22 or 25 even. Maybe not a bathing or tanning day. Surfers are having fun though. Maybe the odd diver will brave that big south swell down the coast. Fisherfolk are out and about at the usual haunts.

Onshore Winds

The only downside of the big high-pressure is gonna be the constant onshore winds. Each day starting peachy like a proper summer morning, the wind is going to build as the days unfold.

The early bird gets the worm on summer mornings like these coming up.

Fishing

These are, however, great fishing conditions. And although you are not allowed to catch shad (not even for bait), it is Kobtober. And there certainly are garrick around. Today is a perfect garrick hunting day if you can find a beach without huge waves crashing in. Like Blue Lagoon as Adam refers to today in his report…

Over to Adam Kamdar in Durban…

Thank you Adam Kamdar in Durban

So, from tomorrow, we should be plain sailing. We have plenty fisherfolk checking in at the Umzimkulu Marina in Port Shepstone. Where The Sardine News is currently broadcasting from.

The next reports will feature here as the day unfolds. We will send out a notification with each update. It’s even easier to stay on top of things if you have installed The Sardine News on your device. And said YES to receive notifications. That way you might never miss a single sardine!

Alan KZN South Coast

As good as you could expect at The Block this morning…we shall hear later what went down.

Thank you Allan!

Sardines n Sighting Maps

It has been a fantastic sardine run this memorable 2024. And all the action has been logged right here on The Sardine News. This year’s map has been viewed 185,000 times and keeps growing.

Which led us to decide to keep the map live. And keep adding unique marine animal sightings and events. That occurs non-stop all year round. This year we started to log more whale and dolphin sightings. And we even had a shipwreck! And a freaking tornado!

These events will from now on be included in the Sardine News Sightings Map for 2024. And on the 1 January 2025, we shall start all over again.

Here are the links to existing and past Sardine Sighting Maps. Great for chilly day like today to research. With instructions to install The Sardine News right on your phone or desktop.

Sardines and Conditions for KZN at 7am this wondrous 11 July 2024 morning by Adam Kamdar in Durban

11 July 2024 Sardines and Conditions Report by Adam Kamdar at 7am in Durban

Sardines and Conditions for KZN at 7am this wondrous 11 July 2024 morning by Adam Kamdar in Durban

Sardines and Conditions for KZN at 7am this wondrous 11 July 2024 morning by Adam Kamdar in Durban: . Adam Kamdar of Township Hyper Tackle delivers a classic morning report on the current Sardine and Conditions situation here in KZN, South Africa.

Over to Adam…

?Good morning, Durban. It’s 7:19 AM Thursday the 11th of July. The high tide coincided with the sunrise time this morning at around 7:00 AM and the next low tide will be just before 1:00 PM Wind Guru shows a settled day today. Uh, light winds, subtle seas, temperatures, uh, around 24 degrees. And the outlook for the next few days is pretty much the same with nicely settled seas.

Tides for fishing shows the wind speed at the moment from the northwest 11 kmph and the temperature is 16 degrees. Maximum expected today 27 degrees. That’s winter in Durban for you. And the atmospheric pressure is 1013 and rising. Wave net is showing a glimmer of reading for the sea temperature. I think there might be an intermittent feed from the thermometer out at sea, but it’s showing temperatures around 22 to 23 degrees.

Still too warm for the sardines to pop up. Next we’ll have the sunrise view. And this is the winter scene in Durban, a lovely sunny day. Um, as I mentioned, temperature is expected to reach 27 degrees today. It’s a lovely warm winter’s day in Durban.

I didn’t see any dolphins this morning. Didn’t see any shoals rising. So: let’s keep our fingers crossed those big shoals keep moving north and reach Durban soon. Have a gorgeous day and stay tuned to thesardine.co.za.

Third wave of sardines have hit the beach in Durban!

Third wave of sardines hit Durban

Third wave of sardines have hit the beach in Durban!

Third wave of sardines have hit the beach in Durban! Adam Kamdar has his finger right on the pulse of each and every sardine as they try to get past Durban. Adam reports for a number of media outlets that count on him daily for sardine, and fishing updates.

And just yesterday Adam sent in the following pics…

Adam (who has been in Durban his entire life) has been through a number of sardine runs. Many of us have. And we all sit comfortably on the sidelines as the chaos of sardine fever first hits. Knowing full well that the sards come in many waves.

Starting with the pilot shoals – usually being hounded by gamefish and cetaceans. Birds.

Then come the bigger shoals and these are normally being herded by all of the above plus the entire shark population of Africa. Millions of seabirds check-in now too. The cetaceans become more numerous and varied. Seals even pull in from the Cape. These shoals seem to just get bigger and bigger until…they vanish!

Sometimes for a week. Sometimes a month. Even two months. But there is always a far more calm and controlled third wave of sardines to chase.

Fishing Roundup during this third wave of sardines

Garrick and kob time. Obviously, the Port St. Johns fiasco continues as a powerless DAFF grapple with the immense and dangerous task at hand – stopping the jiggers.

There are very many small, er, tiny kob around too. Not to be confused with little snappers or snotties. Snotties, which are delicious and only grow to about 2 or 3kgs, have THREE distinct teeth. Sharp ones. These are the ONLY small salmon/kob/whatever, that you can catch.

Put ALL the rest back please!

Some large grunter have been on the menu, it’s all about the bait though. Very fussy fish those guys.

There are some shad about too, again, nobody checking so it’s still a free-for-all. Phone DAFF if you see any criminal activity or bag limits being exceeded. DAFF need all the help they can get.

There are lots of blacktails in the gulleys and in the shorebreaks. Zebra fish too.

Border Spearfishing Event

Every year, every spearo in Southern Africa eagerly seeks out one of the coveted invites to the Border annual spearfishing event. Held in the Transkei, the event is limited to limit the ecological damage an open spearfishing compo could cause.

But hell they got some nice fish…Jason Heyne penned up the story.

Nice work Jason!
