Heading upriver! Exploring the Umzimkulu to where estuary becomes fresh

Umzimkulu Estuary and river mouth sml

Heading upriver! Exploring the Umzimkulu to where estuary becomes fresh.

Exploring the Umzimkulu: Think Deliverance. On steroids! Ha ha! Jokes are free!

But ok, I have been on the downward direction of this particular Umzimkulu River only once. Tube race. It was so tough I can’t even remember it. But now we have a fleet of capable and tough little craft, that can get over and under the many obstacles along the way back inland this time. And we can explore, from the saltwater estuary, right up to the freshwater river.

Exploring the Umzimkulu

I’m not sure where this pilot got his license from, so hold on tight…!

Obstacles

There is a berm built way up, just before St. Helens Rock, that is meant to keep the fresh and saltwater separate. But it is damaged and ineffective. And one of the obstacles we will be negotiating. After that, there are many rapids between pristine pools of calm water. Where we will be fishing.

In wintertime, dry season, the river mouth closes. Forcing the saltwater right back up over the berm, which becomes completely submerged. The salt just keeps going up the pregnantly swollen river. All the while keeping all these sought-after game fish within our reach 24/7.

Fish

We are really trying to find a bull shark. But along the way, ox-eye tarpon live here too. Perch. Rock salmon. Bluetail mullet. Springer. These salties can all handle freshwater.

Exploring the Umzimkulu lower reaches will put us in contact with all these species…

And! What else is up there? That lives there? Yellowfish? Trout? Carp? Well, this river runs down through the Drakensberg, clean as nectar (most of the time). All the way down to the coast. Where Port Shepstonites drink it up merrily through their taps. It’s clean! And that really matters!

But ok, kayaks and tiny boats. And off we go… We have all the craft and equipment here. Good to go 24/7. We have self-catering accommodation, and we have this considerable river to explore.

Turns out to an important and fleeting time in history. But I had got it all wrong! Brucifire was not on the cover of Surf Africa. No! Bruce was inadvertently (without advertising), impersonating the real culprit! Mr. Mike Esposito!

The story goes…

Play the movie!

And that’s that!

The final segment of the Brucifire Surf Report for February 2021.

The Brucifire Surf Report for Feb 2021 Part 3

The Brucifire Surf Report for Feb 2021 Part 3

The Brucifire Surf Report Part 3! If you landed here by search engine, rather use this link to go back to Part 1. After threatening for decades, it’s finally here. Live sometimes and otherwise on-demand on the digital airwaves. On YouTube!

The Brucifire Surf Report Feb 2021 Part 3 is all about the surf. A few sessions strung together with some Bruce commentary – with a little help from his friends of course. Goofrey in the background can be heard clearly! There is a starfish in the mix.

One or two waves filmed at a distance, but soon we gone get Brucifire rigged up with a tripod for his iPad and then we gonna see some good close up and personal supertubes stuff.

There is a reference to the evergreen Stevo Neelo who got bust catching waves in the morning (R2000), during the lockdown, and was back out ripping it up in the very same afternoon!

But ok, this little four-part series will act as the harbinger for the future as Bruce and I get our proverbial act together. These surf reports promise to be a lot of fun and hopefully will raise a few heckles, and sheckles!

From now there shall be even more of…a little history and not so much nostalgia, some superstition, commentary on waves and their masters, and most of all, good solid life advice from Brucifire. Not to be ignored!

Click HERE for Part 4 and the unravelling of the mystery!

The Brucifire Surf Report for Feb 2021 Part 2

The Brucifire Surf Report Part 2! After threatening for decades, it’s finally here. Live sometimes and otherwise on-demand on the digital airwaves. On YouTube!

This is part 2 of all time and deals with this pic, that Brucifire sent me to archive. Go back to Part 1 HERE, in case you landed here by search engine.

And so I asked him a few questions about the mystery pic.

Well I never! Confusion can be a great thing! Look how it unfolded this classic front cover of… Remains to be seen! Well, I really thought that somehow, Brucifire had slipped himself onto the cover of an African Surfer magazine! But alas not! He was self-admittedly impostering! Actually, it turns out, that Brucifire was making peanut butter! For his cereal. And his coffee! Yip! Bruce puts peanut butter in his coffee! I can’t wait to not try! But, the story unfolds, Bruce goes to town to reveal the true cover gracer of that African Surfer piece of class. And! Somewhat more! Remains to be Seen! To those who don’t know, this is the Brucifire archive. And everybody is close by. Real close, as the stories unravel. In technicolour. But ok, are you are on the right page? Or should you be on this page? The main playlist that untells the story, by Brucifire. None other.

Turns out to an important and fleeting time in history. But I had got it all wrong! Brucifire was not on the cover of Surf Africa. No! Bruce was inadvertently (without advertising), sitting right on top of the real culprit! Mr. Mike Esposito!

The story goes…

Play the movie!

From now there shall be even more of…a little history and not so much nostalgia, some superstition, commentary on waves and their masters, and most of all, good solid life advice from Brucifire. Not to be ignored!

The image of confusion! Is the focus of this very first Brucifire Surf Report series.
Who dunnit? The image of confusion! Is the thread of this very first Brucifire Surf Report series. Watch the next show to find out…

This is the very first segment, and is an intro to Brucifire, for any of you who just don’t know.

What part don’t you get?!

But ok, it’s an uneasy brown looking wave with a kick in the drop and a real tube. Much more meat than Stupids says Bruce and Roosta. The scene is from the movie Shaloha! An epic journey taken from perfect wave to perfect wave to perfect wave, between Cape Town and Inhambane (Mozambique). Featuring Roosta and Brucifire, and a few others! Take note!

Play the movie!

But ok, this is the very first segment, of the very first week. The follow ons are great. And are kinda broad and scene-setting in its storyline as Brucifire sums up the current feeling in JBay and surrounds. From his perspective! Which most likely is flying down the line or commenting grandly on some other soul who is!

From now on there shall be even more of…a little history and not so much nostalgia, some superstition, commentary on waves and their masters, and most of all, good solid life advice from Brucifire.

Not to be ignored!

What you could also be doing though is clicking this link, to get the series as a playlist. Then it all makes just a little more sense. And that is the way this is gonna roll out – one segment leading to another. Steady as she goes! At the moment we are still practising but are working it out amongst the team just fine. And so we published all four in one go!
