Baitballs off Durban this 10 August 2024: many pockets of baitfish were spotted off Durban this lovely KZN Winter morning. Starting early and even up to 9:30 am the fish were still clearly visible on the surface.

Adam Kamdar of TownShip Hyper brings us the visuals and talks us through the current set of conditions we have today and the next few days.

We do not know what they are at this stage, but they could be;

• sardines
• mackerel
• maasbanker
• redeye sardines

These usual suspects have been active in the Durban area recently. Often being mistaken for sardines, most of the netting that has been done, has produced mix bags of the above.

7am Durban KZN Bumpy Seas and North Winds: a short period swell can be fun for some people but mostly it makes the sea really bumpy. And then when the northeaster gets up, makes for really choppy conditions. The sea is not very big today, but the complicated conditions make for an ocean to be wary of.

Another strong blow in the afternoon by the northeaster will bring the water temperatures down. And we may still have a last gasp at the visiting sardines.

We might get another Durban KZN Conditions report later today, but most likely not. These are not ideal conditions for much. Maybe diving crayfish in the shallows? Or hunting lost shoals of sardines or shad on the south coast. Some nooks and crannies don’t mind the east winds and east swells.

It is also onshore today up in Mozambique. Down in the Transkei. Jbay is where the high pressure runs out and the south winds prevail. Epic Fishing Weather in KZN Today: it’s a real pearler of a Tuesday as we move into the week. Classic winter conditions in KZN with a gentle land breeze blowing the waves smooth. And a light north easter through the afternoon. That might chill the water a degree or two. That’s all we need for those remaining pockets of sardines to come back into the shallows and bring the shad back in with them.

Surfing is probably gonna be the best bet for today. It’s a Monday. Obviously! Always good waves on a Monday.
