Surf Cooking in Durban, Van Reenen’s Pass is OPEN

Surf is cooking in Durban and the Berg is opening up again slowly

Surf Cooking in Durban by Adam Kamdar

Surf Cooking in Durban by Adam Kamdar: As much as inland is too cold even to go outside, we only get down to about 10 degrees Celsius here in Durban.
Which seems within range for the surfers in Durban town…

Durban 07h30 by Adam

Surf Cooking in Durban today by Adam Kamdar: Luckily for Jack O Neil inventing surfing wetsuits all those cold years ago! For today is even considered crowded as Durban town surfers brave the cold conditions.

Well, the water is 21. And on land it is about 14! Stay in the water all day!

The very short swell period and the ESE direction create the consistent sets. These sets keep coming in at North Beach and surrounds. There are non-stop waves! And these conditions will last into the afternoon. As the light SW just keeps airbrushing it all smoother and smoother each hour.

With a beautiful low tide late morning, it can even get better than it looks right now.

Thank you Adam!

Thank you Adam for visuals and story this icy morning…

Van Reenens Pass is OPEN

After many people and their vehicles were stuck spending the whole night hemmed in on the Van Reenen’s Pass, things finally got back to a reasonable level of ordinariness today.

Only one lane is open, but dual direction traffic is being facilitated.

For Immediate Release
21 September 2024
WEATHER UPDATE: DISASTER MANAGEMENT TEAMS COORDINATING RELIEF EFFORTS AS LEVEL 8 SNOW WARNING ISSUED FOR KZN

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) convened a Joint Operations Centre (JOC) meeting this morning, where District Disaster Management Centres provided updates on relief efforts following the disruptive snowstorm that affected the interior parts of the province since yesterday. The snowstorm has blocked major routes, including the R74 (Harrismith to Bergville), R74 Greytown/Colenso Road, N3 (Harrismith to Tugela Toll), R617 (Kokstad to Underberg), and N3 Northbound, among others.

Multidisciplinary interventions have begun to yield results, with some stranded motorists receiving support in the form of soup kitchens, shelter, and blankets. Local municipalities, in conjunction with other state organs, have mobilised graders to clear snow in affected regions, prioritising major routes to facilitate emergency access.

Residents are urged to stay off the roads and avoid using alternative routes, as inclement weather conditions are expected to worsen. According to the South African Weather Service, a Level 8 warning for further disruptive snow is in effect for Alfred Duma Ladysmith, Dr N. Dlamini-Zuma – Underberg, Greater Kokstad, Impendle, Inkosi Langalibalele Escourt, Inkosi Langalibalele Sobabili, Mpofana Giants Castle, Mpofana Mooi River, Okhahlamba and uMngeni. This warning indicates a potentially life-threatening weather occurrence.

The heavy snowfall has also caused fallen trees, further complicating the situation. Residents living near the N3 who can assist stranded motorists with supplies are encouraged to do so safely.

The heavy snow has disrupted essential services, including water and electricity, in several communities. Technical teams are working to restore these services as quickly as possible, but residents should prepare for potential delays due to the weather conditions.

Residents are strongly advised against snow chasing, as road conditions are extremely dangerous. Communities in the northern parts of the province continue to experience heavy rains, raising concerns about localised flooding. Disaster management teams are providing support to these areas, and residents are warned to remain vigilant.

Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels.

Issued by the KZN Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi.

Sardine n Sighting Maps

It has been a fantastic sardine run this memorable 2024. And all the action has been logged right here on The Sardine News. This year’s map has been viewed 180,000 times and keeps growing.

Which led us to decide to keep the map live. And keep adding unique marine animal sightings and events. That occurs non-stop all year round. This year we started to log more whale and dolphin sightings. And we even had a shipwreck! And a freaking tornado!

These events will from now on be included in the Sardine News Sightings Map for 2024. And on the 1 January 2025, we shall start all over again.

Here are the links to existing and past Sardine Sighting Maps. Great for chilly day like today to research. With instructions to install The Sardine News right on your phone or desktop.

Chilled Friday for KZN Fishing, Surfing and Diving Enthusiasts

Fishing KZN Chilly Friday in Durban by Adam Kamdar

Chilled Friday for KZN Fishing, Surfing and Diving Enthusiasts

Chilly Friday for KZN Fishing, Surfing and Diving Enthusiasts: Adam Kamdar reports waking up to 11 degrees Celsius this icy KZN morning. Imagine being in the mountains!?

Durban 7h30

Over to Adam and his bird’s eye view of the prevailing conditions and the magical Durban Beachfront…

You might notice a subtle new addition to Adam’s report today. The introduction of daily synoptic charts as made available by South African Weather Services! This is mainly to serve old-timers. At a glance, these guys can glean all the weather and sea conditions needed for the next few days. Youngsters should also learn how to read the synoptic charts. Some of the weather predictor websites around these days always show the weather model that has the worst possible outcome.

Since humans respond 10x to 100x more to warnings and bad news content, this is how they get more clicks. And more money. I mean those websites used to work two weeks into the future with ease. Nowadays, the model and thus the readings are being changed to always bring bad weather news.

Tonight and tomorrow are forecast to rain cats and dogs.

Let’s see…

4PM

Well, it’s raining cats and dogs here on the KZN South Coast too now. But it was a beautiful day until about an hour ago. I believe Durban has been raining non-stop all day.

Luckily, we have The Bear of The Master Watermen website to cheer us up. With a chock full spearfishing report…thanks Bear!

Storm Surge WARNING Today for KZN and Eastern Cape

KZN EC Warning Storm Surge

Storm Surge WARNING Today for KZN and Eastern Cape

Storm Surge WARNING Today for KZN and Eastern Cape: if you go down to the beach today, you best change your mind and go back home. Or somewhere else away from the ocean.

The video describes most of it…

With an Explainer video to elaborate more on the dangers of the elements as they are aligned today…

This is most definitely a post/warning that you would like to share today.

The last time a storm surge warning from The Sardine News was ignored, things ended up really bad. The government does not have the experience or understanding to understand a storm surge that consists of:

  • extraordinarily high tides
  • extraordinary big swells
  • high winds
  • further complications like undersea earthquakes or floods

Nobody at SAWS issued any storm surge warnings of any kind this time last year too. It was only us.

Surfing on Tuesday 17 Sep 2024 in Durban by Adam Kamdar of Township Hyper

17 September Durban Surf Conditions

Surfing on Tuesday 17 Sep 2024 in Durban by Adam Kamdar of Township Hyper

Surfing on Tuesday 17 Sep 2024 in Durban by Adam Kamdar of Township Hyper: Adam opens the day with more of a surf report from the Durban Golden Mile as the ocean reveals herself playful and fun. In fact, the sea temperature is warmer than the air temperature at the moment.

Durban 7am

Great for surfing and diving but not so great for shad anglers. Thank you for the update Adam Kamdar in Durban.

Looking forward to hearing from The Bear and the divers who must be out there already taking advantage of the settled sea conditions today.

Check back for more information as the day unfolds.

Port Shepstone 9am

Alan checks in from The Block in Port Shepstone on a beautiful surfing, fishing and diving day in KZN #surfing #fishing #diving #conditions #report

Our second report for the day comes from Alan in Port Shepstone as he gives us the low down on the lekka conditions the ocean has delivered today. The waves are smallish but fun-looking. And launching boats should not present too many problems. The water is clean too. The rivers have not been affected by the local rainfall.

There is a bit of a system developing over the middle of the country today. Unbelievably it’s spill off from what is causing Europe to flood so badly right now. And even more unbelievably this could very easily be blamed on that huge volcano erupting last year. Which caused an extra 10% of moisture to infiltrate the atmosphere. Meaning that floods this year, will be able to be 10% more powerful!

Late Edition: Friday 13th Sep 2024 KZN Reports are Filing in

KZN Reports Friday 13th of September 2024

Friday 13th Sep 2024 KZN Reports by Adam Kamdar, Cliff Bamber and Sean Lange #kzn #durban #conditions #fishing #surfing #diving

Friday 13th Sep 2024 KZN Reports by Adam Kamdar, Cliff Bamber and Sean Lange: In another information-filled report, Adam Kamdar of Township Hyper discusses current conditions and possible outcomes for the weekend. The high-pressure east system in place off of KZN right now has produced a choppy sea with a very short (6 secs) swell. Not good for much.

BUT…

There is a little blow coming through to us from the south later today. At a nice SW angle, this wind is going to brush the ocean clean, warm and smooth when it blows through the night tonight. We could be waking to absolute KZN perfection in the morning.

Thank you Adam…

Cliff Bamber Scottburgh Beach Report Friday 13th September 2024 #kzn #surfing #fishing #diving

Cliff Bamber checks in with more KZN reports. From Scottburgh this Friday the 13th of September in 2024. The sea has made a remarkable recovery and is almost looking usable.

Thank you Cliff!

Shelley Beach

Only two boats launched this morning at Shelley Beach…into a washing machine of a launch as the strong east swell was grinding in. The two boats were commercials going for geelbek – which seem to be plentiful at the moment.

Seapark

Down on the south coast, the secret is out, Seapark has been cooking the last few days. Lotsa guys on it though. Only a few weeks left and the shad season is closed until 1 December.

Somewhere on the South Coast, the shad are going mad…

As the water finally cools down to an acceptable level, these shad really seem to like the same water as the sardines – about 19 degrees Celsius – the game is on again. They should be all over the place so try to find your very own shoal to work. And avoid the crowds in the more popular places. Like Seapark. It really is overcrowded and the litter is piling up. I am not sure yet why most shad fishermen are so dirty. They leave behind all manners of rubbish. Empty bait packaging. Booze bottles. Cigarette butts. It’s really hard to work out how anybody can have so little respect for the very ocean they are harvesting from.

Underwater

And then finally for the day…

Banger Weekend for KZN according to The Bear 13 Sep 24 #spearfishing #report #brusher #garrick And finally the day is wrapped up by The Bear with his highly positive outlook on this weekend coming up. Looking forward to hearing all what happened!
