Swan Surfing Kirra

Swan Surfing Kirra

Now how do you explain this?! Perhaps the black swan is so cognitive, they saw Kelly and crew ripping the place apart, whilst flying over, stopped to watch, and as soon as the famous break got uncrowded – out they paddled (uh flew…).

Kel Mills who lives in Kirra, shot and narrated the clip.

From the website…http://www.svswans.com/black.html

“Before European explorers had reached Australia, it was believed that all swans were white. Dutch mariner, Antounie Caen, was the first to be amazed at the sight of Australia’s Black swans on the Shark Bay in 1636. Explorer Willem de Vlamingh captured two of these creatures on Australia’s Swan River and returned with them to Europe to prove their existence. From that point on, black swans and Australia have been closely linked. During the nineteenth century, the original Western Australian colony was called “the Swan River Settlement.” In 1973, the black swan was officially proclaimed as the “bird emblem” of the Government of Western Australia and now appears on the state flag.”

2014 Four Elements Ocean Challenge Video Launched on World Ocean’s Day

2014 Four Elements Ocean Challenge Video Launched on World Ocean’s Day

The inaugural 2014 Four Elements Ocean Challenge, an open water swim in Durban, South Africa took place in perfect conditions along Durban’s iconic beachfront on Saturday, May 3. The event  saw 16 tough competitors conquer the 7 kilometre swim from Blue Lagoon to the Durban harbour’s north wall.  The purpose of the event was to raise awareness about ocean degradation and celebrate World Oceans Day.  The 2014 Four Elements Ocean Challenge exceeded all expectations.

The event organiser, Olivia Taylor, congratulated the dedicated swimmers and thanked the safety team (Durban Surf Lifesaving Club), family, friends, spectators and sponsors, saying, “We had amazing conditions with gentle offshore winds, waves big enough to break a safety paddler’s surfski, beautiful visibility, warm water, dolphins, rays and shoals of fish…overall the inaugural Challenge was a wonderful success, with the passionate swimmers very excited about the prospect of the Challenge becoming an annual event.”

Four Elements Conservation NPC is the brainchild of Durban Girls College pupil, Olivia Taylor (17), whose passion for our natural environment moved her to form the organisation in 2012. “Our objective is to support, communicate and promote environmental activities, including the protection and preservation of endangered, threatened or suffering creatures” said Taylor. “Humanity is threatened by mass indifference, and we want to have a positive effect on our environment by mobilising people and inspiring them to uphold our principle of ‘Dive Deeper, Aim Higher, Fly Further”.

Banana Beach estuary cleanup video #2

Banana Beach estuary cleanup

Local surfers have started cleaning the completely congested Banana Beach estuary. Water Hyacinth took over the blind estuary in a matter of a week or so. The Injambili River just north has also been taken over these alien plants.

When they have completely covered the surface of the water body, fish cannot get to the surface and in the shallows get caught up by the root system of the floating plants.

The worldwide problem of hyacinth can only really be combatted by physical removal, in a manner that does not affect the environment too much. This means getting in and getting dirty…

Shaloha Uploaded

Shaloha Uploaded

Well, we have tried this before but were ruthlessly taken out of the sky by arguing IP control freaks. But luckily we are almost caught up with the content lost…the uploading of Shaloha by Bruce Gold and co, was one of those missing news items…

This video movie was shot from the West Coast to the East Coast of Southern Africa, by Bruce Gold and friends, in 2009. It is the end of a series of surf videos by the SurfTV organisation of old, made to pay tribute to, and preserve the heritage and culture, of travelling surfers. And who else but Bruce Gold, portraying Brucifire, to put the message across.

Rough roads, hard times, breakdowns, injury, disease, blowouts…and finally endless supplies of tropical and sub-tropical peeling and barreling waves.

The first few chapters are good to go and we will throw a few more later…enjoy!

“The journey’s over, the journey never began…!”, Brucifire.

“Like Jah, surfing will provide…”, Roosta

“Believe….don’t believe..!”, Shonalanga

And another billfish in the boat…

And another billfish in the boat…

This time a sailfish at Crocodile Bay in Costa Rica…!

Once again, these guys were doing everything right, except for their combined reaction times being very slow.
Luckily sailfish are a bit more manageable than marlin, they didn’t really have to jump overboard – but getting away from that bill can only have improved their lot…except for the skipper driving off and leaving them bobbing!
