The sailfish have pitched up exactly on time off Bazaruto and it looks to be another great contest. The ladies will have to fend off some serious competition from the experienced local and visiting field – in this exclusively release event.

They are: Susana VidalDee Lou and Gretha DeWet pictured above at Vila do Paraiso, Vilanculos, Mozambique.

The weather looks a bit otherwise at the moment but it should be clear skies and sailfish bites over the fishing window of 22 to 26 May. May is renowned not only for the sailfish – but also the great weather.

The competition will be hosted at Villa Paraiso, a top notch resort that looks straight out over the islands of Bazaruto, Benguerra, Margaruque and Bungue – and the clear blue waters of the magnificent Bazaruto Archipilego. Just outside of these islands, lies the deep water that contours the Mozambique Current right in close. Real close. With ideal sailfish territory built in like huge canyons and drop offs – reef pinnacles everywhere. And bait to beat the band. Don’t forget your Mydo Baitswimmers!

Late season marlin at Bazaruto

Late season marlin at Bazaruto

Late season marlin at Bazaruto

With some good weather and great bait action, the late season marlin at Bazaruto put on a great show.

Captain Duarte Rato reports that April is actually a great time to target big blues out the back – especially if the weather holds. This April was decidedly otherwise with it’s weather, but the big boats enabled fishing in the canyons off Maragruque quite comfortable. Bait was plentiful, but the razor gang just kept chopping them to pieces. And so monst of the fish reported were taken on lures.

And so a few blues featured amongst a few blacks, and finally at the end of April, the sailfish pitched up with the cooler water.

Wahoo and tuna also abounded, with the second annual wave of dorado making for some exciting strikes.

Margaruque Wahoo Strike

Captain Gallop and the Wahoo

Margaruque Wahoo Strike

Margaruque Wahoo Strike by Robin Beatty.

Another great catch off Margaruque this time by Captain Gallop (aka Robin Beatty), deep off the islands on an amazing pinnacle full of these angry fish. They destroyed 6 of our live skipjack before we wised up and targeted one or two ‘Hoo. Captain Paul Saayman skippering his boat Shades of Blue got us onto the fish.

Wahoo are reputed to get 75kmh, and their strike is legendary. But once you get the toothy monster aboard, that’s when things get even more crazy.

Trying to get a photo of the wahoo whilst it still had it’s lights on, I hoisted the fish and got whacked in the arm by it’s tiny front teeth, never mind the lashers further back, where my other hand was – trying to control the angry animal.

Big Bazaruto Couta by Wade Kendall

Big Bazaruto Island Couta by Wade Kendall

Big Bazaruto Couta by Wade Kendall

Full story and video to follow but this is a preview of the Big Bazaruto Couta caught by Wade Kendall out on Shades of Blue, yesterday.

We were out off San Sebastian a little south of Bazaruto (on the big scale), when we lucked into some bait and rigged a bonnie with a MYDO Livebaitswimmer couta trace – and it wasn’t three minutes.

Paul Saayman skipper and Wade on the rod, Wade’s Dad Ian, myself and our local guide enjoyed the 15 minute fight immensely until the leader jammed on the reel and we had to handline the last few metres! But after a generally slow day, this fish sealed the deal for us all. Especially Wade.

On our way home we bumped into one those baby black marlin that everyone has been talking about. It was free jumping after it had smashed something – in about 3 or 4 metres of water! We are really after one of those guys for a release candidate today…stay posted. – Xonalanga
