Sandile “Cyril” Mqadi of Surfing South Africa wins SA Sports Award as Volunteer of the Year

Johannesburg Sunday November 30th, 2014- Surfing South Africa’s Sandile “Cyril” Mqadi was named as the Volunteer of the Year at the 2014 SA Sports Awards which was held at the Sandton Convention Centre on Sunday November 20th.

Mqadi, who works with former street children at Umthombo, began his involvement in surfing in Umzumbe on the KZN South Coast back in 1994. He is an internationally accredited judge who has worked on major national and international events both in South Africa and abroad. He is also an internationally accredited surfing coach and has helped numerous young surfers from Umzumbe and Durban to become better competitors but it is his commitment to coaching disadvantaged children at Addington Beach in Durban which earned him the nomination and the win.

The Festival will run at Margate Main Beach from 21 to 24 December and Ballito Main (Willard) Beach from 26 to 29 December from 10am to 4pm daily, and entrance is free.

Beach Bums, Tongaat – Saturday 22nd of November will mark the second edition of the Off The Lip Movember Surf Jam at Tongaat’s Beach Bums. This event, which is hosted by Quiksilver and the Movember foundation, is aimed at creating awareness as well as raising funds for men’s prostate cancer, testicular cancer and other men’s health issues. Surfers participating in the event are encouraged to dress up in seventies surf gear, alter-ego’s welcome, use surfboards from the seventies era and show off their bushy upper lips while creating awareness for the Movember movement.

November 1 and 2 saw the much-anticipated return of the Africa Marine & Leisure Expo to the beaches of Scottburgh and Rocky Bay, marking the third year of this UGU South Coast Tourism sponsored event. Previously, the Africa Marine & Leisure Expo has not only celebrated the beach lifestyle for which the South Coast is so famous, but also shone a spotlight on marine conservation groups acting to safeguard coastal environments both in the province and throughout South Africa. This year’s event was no different, focusing equally on informing and inspiring the crowds about conservation issues, and making sure everyone that attended had a fantastic, fun-filled day out.
