Inhaca Blue Marlin bite off the scale

Inhaca Blue Marlin bite off the scale

Inhaca Blue Marlin bite off the scale

Captain Duarte Rato of FishBazaruto.com has his finger on the pulse up and down the East Coast of Africa, and has an amazingĀ Inhaca Blue Marlin bite to report, this March 2017.

The recent sportĀ fishing competition held from out of Inhaca,Ā just out from Mozambiques capital, Maputo – Ā reported phenomenal numbers and more numbers of marlin action. The release only tourney was a huge success for the 13 boats, who each accounted for a minimum of three fish!

The winning teams raised so many marlin, that they lost count!

An excerpt from Captain Duarte’s report…

“Yolanda won the event with the release of 7 fish, four Blues and three stripes. However, they reported sixteen bites and over thirty raised fish ā€“ they said they lost count.

Then there were two boats with 5 releases; Hakuna Matata released 3 blues and 2 striped and Aquamarine 2 Blues and 3 stripes.

Gabri got 4 fish on the day. They released a blue and two Blacks and had another Blue die on them, which got tail wrapped and could not be revived.

The guys aboard Fourplay released 3 Blues, out of 12 they either missed or pulled ā€“ and they had 19 fish up for the day.

Other fish reported where a Black by Cheetah out of three bites, and they only fished until 9am. Nakisai also released 2 Blues amongst a number of strikes. Nana released two Blues and had another one sharked by an Oceanic Whitetip, the first ever time I have heard of a fish being sharked out wide in this fisheryĀ“s. They also lost another right by the leader, and reported about 15 bites! Another boat that reported a similar number of fish on the day was Mon Ami, although they failed to convert those except on one striped they released out of the whole lot. Bite Me II released two Blues, as well as DanDan.

ThatĀ“s an average of more than 3 Marlin per boat per day and not a single one of the ten boats that where specifically targeting Marlin skunked! Again, this is weekend anglers, mostly fishing out of small outboard powered trailer boats!

The mind wondersā€¦ ?” – Captain Duarte Rato

The perfect storm in Maputo last night

Storm in Maputo

The perfect storm in Maputo last night

The weather and swell forecasters never had a clue. Forecasts for the Maputo zone were favourable all week. There were signs of some menace as the forecasters jumpbled weather windows around, but nothing really stuck out. Not even on the synoptics. All the elements in place – surprise being the main one, for the perfect storm in Maputo last night.

And we were on our way back from Pomene, 290 Nm north, when we drove straight into it!

Luckily our vessel, the MSC Albatross, was built for this shit, and we were able to ride into Inhaca with salt soaked grace. Right in the middle of the 70 knots recorded in Maputo. The twin 330hp Volvo Pentas and 15 metres of semi displacement purity sailed in just fine, at 25 knots, we were flying along with the east wind.

We survived just fine, we are always ready for this type of phenomenen, but the statistics are not good for some…

Check the gallery, with the bad news following it…

Then we have a video too…

And then the very bad news…a few boats were lost too, including this work boat operating in the channel. One person is presumed missing so far. The boat capsized in the wild seas, spilled it’s crew and washed up on Ave da Marginal across the front of Maputo. Others were rescued but the toll will only be tallied as the day goes on.

First stone laid for new Maputo fish market

First stone laid for new Maputo fish market

by John Hughes (AIM)

Maputo, 3 Jul (AIM) – Mozambiqueā€™s Minister of Fisheries, Victor Borges, on Thursday laid the first stone for the construction of the new Maputo fish market.

The market will have a hundred fish stalls with refrigerated storage to conserve the produce and a restaurant area.

The project is budgeted at 11.3 million US dollars, of which 8.6 million will be provided by the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The Maputo Municipal Council will provide 1.4 million dollars, with the remaining funds coming from the Mozambican government.

Speaking during the ceremony, the minister said that artisanal fishing in Mozambique makes up over 85 per cent of the fishing sector, with the rest being composed of aquiculture and industrial fishing. Borges added that the artisanal sub-sector produced 196,000 tonnes of fish last year out of a total production of 220,000 tonnes.

The minister said the quality and safety of the fish will be checked in the laboratory of the National Institute of Fish Inspection (INIP).

Borges stated that the country currently only has one internationally accredited laboratory, situated in Maputo. However, two laboratories, in the central cities of Beira and Quelimane, are in the process of being accredited, with a third laboratory planned for the northern city of Nacala.

Maputoā€™s mayor David Simango pointed out that the fish market is the capital cityā€™s third major public construction project currently underway. Work is already taking place on the Maputo Ring Road and the capitalā€™s coastal defences.

These fantastic photos were submitted by some of the participants…

“Hello

The fish equaled the all tackle world record Yellowspot king.
Also caught a golden king that was very close to the 10kg line class IGFA
world record but released the fish so didn’t weigh it.
Caught a nice GT of 107 cm.

All on squiddies.
Regards

Pierre”
