Port Edward Catch and Release competition a great success

Port Edward Catch and Release competition a great success

The word is out…the Port Edward Catch and Release Competition was a phenomenal success and looks to be lighting the way for other events to follow. Excitement, suspense, entertainment – are all results of the intriguing new set of rules and arrangements. Photo taking is an integral part of the show, and photos of fish being caught and released are played in the event tent on a big screen each afternoon.

The slightly complicated scoring system was soon easily interpreted and anglers adapted to this positive idea readily. After all, in the past, competitions like the old Port Edward Couta Classic, put immense strain on resources, which are now feeling the effects in their fragile and exploited state.

A hearty congratulations to the forward thinking people who were behind this innovative initiative!

E-Howzit got the winning photo of the winners…thanks guys!

Defillipi’s win the PORT EDWARD Catch and Release Species Ski Boat Compo 2014

Defillipi’s win the PORT EDWARD Catch and Release Species Ski Boat Compo 2014

In a fiercely contested fish off for yet another boat, this time on offer from the Marlin Ski-Boat Club in Port Edward, Greg and Dave Defillipi along with Moo Fraser took top honours, at the prize-giving yesterday.

It was neck and neck all the way through the event, but in the end, the elusive ‘couta became the critical variable. The Defillipi’s had a couta, the others didn’t. Runners up were the Posthumous team and Olivier team.

Special mention and applause goes to Marlin Ski-Boat Club for their revolutionary initiative in making the event a species and release event. This minimises the damage done to the environment and our fragile fish stocks, and increases the fun and skill elements, whilst reducing the luck factor.

As soon as the official results have been released, we will update this post…with more information.

Head bangers tuna fishing…

image

Joey Chetty, Michael Govender and his nice catch of a 12kg yellow fin tuna, Angie Naidoo, Brian Lange and Christopher Naidoo after a rough outing to Protea Reef, this morning.
This time of year the condition of the sea can be disagreeable but the winter game fish season is underway and the roving fish seem to like the big swells, winds and currents. In fact this tuna jumped on the lure a few seconds after it was let out…
