Cell C Goodwave Stays On Hold


Durban – The contest organisers of the Cell C Goodwave have made the decision to keep the event on hold, and not call a Green Light for the forecast Monday 15th / Tuesday 16th May swell.

According to the event’s official swell forecaster Spike from www.wavescape.co.za, the storm comes in hard and fast and right up against the coast, bringing wild seas and stormy weather. By the time conditions are good, the swell is dropping off.

“Although there is going to be a lot of swell on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, it’s looking mixed up with wind chop and swell coming in together, in other words, the short, medium and longer period swell coming straight off the conveyor belt and into the coast. There will be waves that are big enough, and perhaps individually good rides, but it’s not the perfect, lined up swell that the Goodwave thrives on.”

“We want a swell that has travelled a little longer, and comes in as clean, pure groundswell lines, rather than a storm swell right on top of us,” he said.

The contest organisers, along with Spike, will continue to monitor the early season swells to find the best possible day to run this event. The tournament has a one-year waiting period that ends on 31 December 2017, so there is plenty of time and opportunity to get the right day to run it. Invited surfers are reminded to be on alert and watch the Cell C Goodwave website and Facebook page for updates.

Rated as a World Surf League Specialty Event, the contest costs one Rand to enter, and has a massive first prize of R100k, the largest domestic prize for the sport in South Africa. The contest also has jetski assist for all competitors.

The Cell C Goodwave is a South African Surfing Legends event, with Jason Ribbink the contest director.

California Dreaming, overlooking New Pier on the beachfront, will host the competition on the day. Oakley and Sun International are both supporting sponsors.

 Waiting Period Announced For 2017 JBU Supertrial Presented By Monster Energy

JBay – The much-anticipated JBU Supertrial event that happens every year at Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay will take place sometime during their normal waiting period slot of 1-11 June. The event organisers have traditionally held these dates as a prime time for early winter swells, and this year will see the contestants on stand-by for a suitable swell during that 11-day window.

The event is an exclusive invite-only tournament, and the winner receives a wildcard into the World Surf League Championship Tour event that takes place every year in JBay, the Corona JBay Open. It is the only contest in the country that offers a stake into a Championship Tour competition, and a win here could very easily launch a young South African surfers’ pro career.

The value of a chance to compete against surfers like Kelly Slater, Gabriel Medina, John John Florence or Jordy Smith cannot be measured, and that sort of experience is absolutely vital in a surfer’s bid to compete at the top level of our sport.

“This year we will see a change of format, which will be announced shortly, along with the list of invited surfers,” said contest organizer Koffie Jacobs. “The JBU Surf Club is looking forward to hosting this event again, and being part of getting a South African surfer the chance to compete at a Championship Tour level. Good luck to all competitors.”

The JBU Supertrial is a precursor event to the JBay Winterfest that takes place in Jeffreys Bay from July 12- 23. The JBay Winterfest is anchored by the Corona JBay Open Championship Tour competition.

After getting in a good session surfing at Flintstones Too, a few days later and we got back on the jungle trail around Port Shepstone. This time the path led straight to the real Flintstones and the guns were out.

Roosta, Calvin and Buzz took on the shallow reef ledge with lefts and rights coming in like a little miniature North Shore. The spot seems to hold semblance to a bunch of others close by – powerful, fast and challenging.

It has been a fantastic summer so far, the swells have been thick and fast – we even had a few bigger days at the end of January. In fact, speculation in the carpark calls the summer a better winter thus far.

The offshores have been holding way into the morning, and the water has been over 24 degrees most of the time. Crystal clear too! The fishing conditions are superb and many a spinning angler can be seen at our favourite beaches up and down the KZN South Coast. Today was another surfing treat as Hibberdene turned on the juice for an entire low tide – barrells in summer!

Chasing the goose – surfing the KZN South Coast in summer

Surfing the KZN South Coast in summer…Onshore, offshore, side-shore, cross-shore day to day. Bluebottles, sunburn traffic and brown water, dawn patrols and of course chasing the proverbial golden goose. I woke up way too early the other morning again to a sweet and very uncharacteristic offshore careening down the river. A little after dawn I am staring at the sea with a coffee and of course no-one to surf with- again, it get’s a little ‘Groundhog’ around here sometimes especially out of season, I find myself scrambling madly through my phone trying to conjure someone to surf with- no joy, everyone’s stuck in the real world- a curse and a blessing this existence…and no one is answering the phone. Plan B I hunt my evergreen older brother Shonalanga, and phantom Nephew Buzz down and an anxious hour or two scratches by until all three of us are in the car with the camera charged headed to a brand new surfspot! You see I have been hunting new waves- especially slabby reefbreaks my whole life. A little bird told me about a particularly chunky little wave the boogieboarders love to ride, and I had been on a mission to find it. Turns out the wave I thought was ‘Flintstones’ turns out to be just another perfect little bend of reef peeling into a rocky bay just around the corner!

To cut a long story to smithereens Sean drew the short straw and was elected as filmer and we got to finally start shooting for our project in collaboration with Gazo and Justin at Wedge surfboards to film and test these crazy new sleds they are making. Quite literally building chassis into surfboards with crazy concave and Modern Planing Hull technology. Stay tuned for more in this video I am riding the latest C-Link model 5’5 and Buzz is riding the Air-Bender 5’5 as well which is one of the fastest and most responsive boards I have ever ridden- you just have to be completely on your game to ride them properly…

Surfing Tofo shorebreak

Surfing Tofo shorebreak through the high tide is a great option when the waves aren’t that good at the points.

The rapidly shifting sand and currents in the bay have made for so many configurations over the years. Right now it’s pretty much an a-frame right in front of Nordin’s Lodge, between Wayani Pariango and Fatima’s.

Earlier this year, it formed up as a looooong right hander with barreling sections rivaling those normally found at Tofinho and Barra. It held the crowd well, everybody and his dog enjoyed the two weeks of cranking superbank type waves. This wave started way up top and peeled right past in front of the hotel – which was filled with spectators at the afternoon after-work session.

This month we have been visited by the spirited Plomaritis family, who took the prevailing seasonal raging onshores with grace and dvd’s, and were rewarded neatly enough, with some great sessions at The Dragon and here out front at Praia do Tofo.
