Sharks and all in Mossel Bay

Sharks and all in Mossel Bay…by Brandon Parsons

More news in from The Sardine Newspaper correspondent Brandon Parsons. When he is not teaching people how to papgooi and catch bass in an around Gauteng – he is chasing huge sharks, rays and other cool gamefish in the Southern Cape area – Mossells being his favourite haunt…
“I went down to mosselbaai recently in search of some sharks and managed to keep myself and my crew busy, despite the conditions being horrible and the sea not playing along at all .

On this adventure we were targeting some non edibles again, and really got stuck in properly. Our rods were crazy busy with the smaller shark species that I managed to get just behind the bank. We were getting bored of the smaller ones when suddenly on of our crew’s rod revved like a rental car in Chatsworth! He was on proper and managed to land a really nice size raggie (Ragged Tooth Shark).
Since I left, there have been reports of some smaller garrick and a couple of nice duckies!!!!!!
Lets all remember to catch and release – as it is the future of our sport. Brandon Parsons”
Thanks Brandon – keep catching those sharks man!

Daga Salmon at The Sandspit

Daga Salmon at The Sandspit

Daga Salmon at The Sandspit: another lucky angler with a beautiful fish. Thanks to Brandon Parsons who sent in the photo.

Well it’s been a bumper season for daga salmon fishermen down at The Block and on The Sandspit, in Port Shepstone, this year. Many, many fish have come out in the corner where the Umzimkulu River has closed for so long. Hopefully they will find another river somewhere to spawn and breed or the summer will keep the mouth open long enough for them to enter.

Whilst researching the reproductive behaviour of this magnificent but threatened species, I came across an awesome and comprehensive description of the Daga Salmon, written by a very authoritative, Mike Otgaar.

Enjoy his work by following the link below. Thanks Mike!

Brandon Parsons with an estimated 60kg Gray Shark caught and released just up the beach from Hibberdene, on the KZN South Coast. Not to worry, Gray Sharks don’t bite people, although they do cannibalise themselves – the bait Brandon used was a small Gray Shark! The shark was caught just before the otherwise weather of late set in. Brandon grew up fishing Hibberdene’s productive waters and now does professional fishing guiding all over Southern Africa. He practices catch and release – most of the time!

Contact Brandon on littlevbrandy@gmail.com for more information on when and where he can take you fishing.

Why fishermen should stay humble – by Brandon Parsons

Why fishermen should stay humble – by Brandon Parsons

“After landing your first few really big sharks and fish in your life – your confidence builds and builds – until that day…” – Brandon Parsons

Feeling strong enough to handle whatever the ocean throws your way, out goes the bait – the perfect bait, perfect trace – and perfect tackle…and see what happens…in these two Ground Zero videos shot in the heat of the action…deep in the Southern Cape, near Mossel Bay…

The Saratoga featured in this clip can go 20kg’s or more – that’s enough drag to fight a 1000lb marlin with!? With the braid technology these days meaning you can fill your reel to the max – hundreds of metres – you can normally turn anything with power like this. But this fish got other ideas – eventually the pressure was too much for the gorilla hook – straightened!

This is a serious hook that has been annihilated by the combination of the Saratoga drag and the huge fish on the other end. Brandon Parsons

And the next instalment…same place…Brandon Parsons in deep in the Southern Cape…

And the Torium in this clip can pump up to more than 15kg’s – these are two monster fish being tangled with here!

To experience this type of action for yourself – call Brandon 0n 079 058 8722 or email umzimkulu@gmail.com

We can arrange your fishing adventures and guides, accommodation, transport, bait and tackle…to this amazing and shark infested fishing area. We release all our fish (except dinner) and target mainly oversize sharks, huge kob and steenbras.
