Cell C Goodwave Stays On Hold For Upcoming Swell

Cell C Goodwave 2017

Cell C Goodwave Stays On Hold

Durban – The contest organisers of the Cell C Goodwave have made the decision to keep the event on hold, and not call a Green Light for the forecast Monday 15th / Tuesday 16th May swell.

According to the event’s official swell forecaster Spike from www.wavescape.co.za, the storm comes in hard and fast and right up against the coast, bringing wild seas and stormy weather. By the time conditions are good, the swell is dropping off.

“Although there is going to be a lot of swell on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, it’s looking mixed up with wind chop and swell coming in together, in other words, the short, medium and longer period swell coming straight off the conveyor belt and into the coast. There will be waves that are big enough, and perhaps individually good rides, but it’s not the perfect, lined up swell that the Goodwave thrives on.”

“We want a swell that has travelled a little longer, and comes in as clean, pure groundswell lines, rather than a storm swell right on top of us,” he said.

In the absence of a good swell approaching, here is the Cell C Goodwave teaser video to display exactly what sort of waves we are looking for the run this event.

The contest organisers, along with Spike, will continue to monitor the early season swells to find the best possible day to run this event. The tournament has a one-year waiting period that ends on 31 December 2017, so there is plenty of time and opportunity to get the right day to run it. Invited surfers are reminded to be on alert and watch the Cell C Goodwave website and Facebook page for updates.

Rated as a World Surf League Specialty Event, the contest costs one Rand to enter, and has a massive first prize of R100k, the largest domestic prize for the sport in South Africa. The contest also has jetski assist for all competitors.

The Cell C Goodwave is a South African Surfing Legends event, with Jason Ribbink the contest director.

California Dreaming, overlooking New Pier on the beachfront, will host the competition on the day. Oakley and Sun International are both supporting sponsors.

The Cell C Goodwave – in loving memory of Lee Wolins.

Spearo Report KZN South Africa

Spearo Report KZN South Africa

Our Spearo Report KZN South Africa as compiled by Jason Heyne…

The diving conditions this week have been average to above average. There are cobia, cuda and snoek around in numbers. Saturday and Sunday a light to moderate northeast blows picking up speed in the late afternoon with a swell of 1.5m running both days. So both Saturday and Sunday are looking good for a dive as long as you get on it early. There was viz reported Durban bluff areas and South coast. Well done Garret Staats on getting the fish of the week…a 24kg cobia!! As always dive safe and straight spears.

Chandling services in Mozambique

Captain Sean A. Lange at the helm in Maputo to Pomene mission

Chandling services in Mozambique

The Sardine Charters and Chandling offering chandling services in Mozambique and South Africa, take on all sorts of marine challenges for the film industry, survey industry and tourism sector.

Recently we were consigned to conduct sea and surf trials with a custom designed and produced displacement hull cat of 15.5m, and powered by inboards. The task was to set out at Inhaca Island, near Maputo, and head north 370 nautical miles, to Pomene, in Inhambane province. And back.

Here is the video…of that trip…

Before that we were surveying in Mozambique and Uganda – it’s been a busy time. In some crazy places and serious waters.

Our next job is in Vilankulos, where we are supplying services to a big game fishing outfit. We also rig boats for targeting whichever particular fish is on the list. Rods and reels. Tackle. Fish fighting systems and rigs. Safety. Night fishing. First aid and medical equipment.

Gearing up for shad season

This is the MYDO SS Spoon Shad in 3.2mm Stainless Steel specification 316 marine grade. Made in South Africa available at http://thesardine.co.za/mydo/

Gearing up for shad season

Gearing up for shad season has become real fun as the market has presented us with so many ways to catch these delicious and sporty fish.

You don’t even need bait anymore!

Catching shad on lures, normally spoons, has been the national favourite past time for many. Now the art has been augmented with a wide range of options for the lure angler. Shad love it shiny whatever the colour. And a slow retrieve with gentle twitches to get the spoon acting like a live bait.

Leave the bait at home!

From MYDO we have the radical new range of SS Spoons. The twin blade design with lateral line holes together create a lot more fuss than regular spoons. The twin blades provide underwater sound that shad and kob love to hear. The lateral line holes make for huge casts on such light lures as they fly through the air unhindered aerodynamically. Then when the lure hits the water, the holes create cavitation of air and water leading to all sorts of wild and fish enticing effects. Bubbles and spray flying everywhere! Smoky bubble trails that fish can see for miles.

The shad season has been open a while now, but it’s usually from about now on, that things really start hotting up. As much as dreams are free – when divers Marc and Pierre (pictured below), saw and shot this giant shad – it was one of a shoal all about the same size. This shad had a karanteen trace in it’s mouth when it was taken off Chaka’s Rock in Umtentweni, KZN South Coast.

Chris Leppan marlin on kayak

2022 marlin season

Chris Leppan marlin on kayak

Chris Leppan again with an authentic Durban marlin taken from his Kayak. Unfortunately the fish was wounded so Chris tied it to his waist and paddled the 80kg estimated fish in through the surf.

The fish took a modified StrikePro hard plastic bait which Chris was towing around off Durban North, quite near the backline. Whilst hunting for snoek (queen mackeral). Quite ironically, a marlin fishing boat was trolling right next to Chris when the black marlin decided to jump on the tiny white lure.

Quite a performance Chris, we cannot wait to see what you get up to next?!

It’s been a great billfish season so far with the sheer numbers of baby black marlin making the news most times. Although Chris’ fish was not that small at 80kg’s, some cute little guys in the twenties have been getting snared by anglers up and down the East Coast of Africa. Including two taken off Margate Pier, along with a bunch of dorado?! And quite a few more on the north coast. Wether or not this proliferation is good news for the future, or that they are the known small guys from the Pemba area, will only be found out when the tags say something.

Use a MYDO Baitswimmer #2 with a little mackerel, drag it along the backline in the blue water somewhere, and catch and release your own baby black! They really perform at these young ages, outperforming their parents for a real spectacle!

Cameras ready!
