Handy Hardware Hibberdene for fishing tackle

Handy Hardware Hibberdene for fishing tackle

Handy Hardware in Hibberdene have long been supplying locals and visiting anglers with the right fishing tackle for the KZN South Coast.

Their deep sea wares are top notch, they even stock The Mydo range.

Rock and surf in the Hibberdene area is legendary with some massive fish landed from the point over the years. Read about the most amazing catch of all right here.

The Hibberdene estuary has made a remarkable comeback since the highway development that convinced us all the petite estuary was a goner. But no, the rehabilitation of the river system worked a treat and fishing with artificial lures therein might yield surprising results.

You won’t know if you don’t go!

Since most of the big deals in the country have not supported locally hand-made MYDOs, we sell them online mainly. And in a few shops that still have their souls.

So if you are after a Mydo or two, try out Handy Hardware in Hibberdene. Or check out the Tackle menu on The Sardine News above.

Chris Leppan shoots huge couta at Pomene

Chris Leppan and his huge couta at Pomene

Chris Leppan shoots huge couta at Pomene

Watch this cool underwater and highly authentic video shot by Asha Irvine, Chris’ able lady – as Chris puts the spear in a huge couta at Pomene recently.

The fish was deep down, swimming the bottom as Chris descended above and behind to plant the perfect shot. The couta swims off like it would, and Chris gives chase, with Asha right behind him, camera rolling.

The reel gun must have been smoking underwater but luckily it was well spooled and the 32kg fish soon got dragged up kicking and screaming.

Chris’ antics have been nothing more than spectacular…we had to run a series on him to keep up!

More Chris action right here:

Just btw, we somehow have two Chris Leppan’s, and they are both smoking hot anglers…

This is the other Chris Leppan…

And more about his fish right here:

Chandling services in Mozambique

Captain Sean A. Lange at the helm in Maputo to Pomene mission

Chandling services in Mozambique

The Sardine Charters and Chandling offering chandling services in Mozambique and South Africa, take on all sorts of marine challenges for the film industry, survey industry and tourism sector.

Recently we were consigned to conduct sea and surf trials with a custom designed and produced displacement hull cat of 15.5m, and powered by inboards. The task was to set out at Inhaca Island, near Maputo, and head north 370 nautical miles, to Pomene, in Inhambane province. And back.

Here is the video…of that trip…

Before that we were surveying in Mozambique and Uganda – it’s been a busy time. In some crazy places and serious waters.

Our next job is in Vilankulos, where we are supplying services to a big game fishing outfit. We also rig boats for targeting whichever particular fish is on the list. Rods and reels. Tackle. Fish fighting systems and rigs. Safety. Night fishing. First aid and medical equipment.

Click here if you have a real challenge!

Offshore Africa’s new sardine spotter plane

Sardine spotter "Tzulu"Dowsett will be piloting this awesome machine as he searches the seas for sardines and their predators

Offshore Africa’s new sardine spotter plane

Take a look at Offshore Africa’s new sardine spotter plane!

Yep, introducing “Tzulu” Dowsett as the pilot of the cool gyrocopter that he will be flying to locate shoals of sardines this year. Starting in about two months time, pilot shoals of sardines will have started making their way north, as the exodus starts. It’s estimated that almost 10% of the entire sardine population breaks from the main pack down in the southern oceans to form the greatest shoal on earth.

Having this facility will help put clients of Offshore Africa down in Port St. Johns, right on the button. Port St. Johns is the epi-centre of the sardine run each year – Offshore have been taking punters out and into the middle of the action for many seasons now – the longest operating dive facility there.

Rob Nettleton and Debbie Smith, the operators of Offshore Africa and Diving with Sharks, have been hard at work underwater for decades. Their local experience combined with excellent service reputation and happy customers, have made them first choice for anything sardine and radical!

Situated in the Transkei, on The Wild Coast – Offshore have many other things to do in Port St Johns, when you make it down there. The team there have a huge cruiser on the Umzimvubu River, aswell as an air boat – unbelievably one of only two in the country. Fun, fun, fun!

Enjoy this gallery from 2015 sardine run…it gives a great idea of what goes on down there!
