Summertime in Tofo

Surfing Tofo shorebreak: Team Mom and Dad Plomaritis leave a few for the kids

Summertime in Tofo

Summer has hit Tofo with a heatwave that takes some getting used to! Its a merry 25 degrees in the evenings, and soars to 35 or more in the daytime. It’s been a little rainy through November ā€“ it’s those days after the rain that come back with such vengeance.

But that is what everyone is here for ā€“ some R&R in the sun! Rest and recovery, not Rum and Morango!

Surfing

The waves were waving in November, and the sand has stuck around the at the usual haunts, and looks to stay checked in right through December. But it’s out front of the market and down past Fatimas, that has been hosting the most surfers. Nice little shore breaks great for getting your grovel on! And staying fit!

Fishing

The fish market tells stories of the couta being really on the bite. Some boats are back before 6am with a few fish already. But it’s the bottomfish that are of real quality. Big reds and snapper. Huge scavengers ā€“ like over a kilo each. Delicious! It’s great that these artisinal fishermen are still finding such high quality fish ā€“ it seems that rowboats as commercial fishers, might just be sustainable. This year on the Tofo side of the peninsula, we will be running kayak fishing trips, on the nice days.

Diving

The water has been quite clean and again, the diveys have reported loads of life on the reefs. Check out a real cool video by ArtSurfer.nl, shot yesterday, at Manta Reef, way down towards Guinjata and Coconut Bay. This reef, just south of Praia do Rocha, and about 3kms out to sea, is spectacular as you can see on the clip. The turtle leading the cast, actually lives there on Manta, most of the time. A nice surprise from last week, were the few straggling humpbacks. They do sometimes hang around into November, but very seldom December. A mother and calf were seen together by a dive crew.

And a gallery of things that happen in summertime in Tofo…

DOUBLE HEADER MARLIN FOR CHRISSIE & JOHN JACKSON

DOUBLE HEADER MARLIN FOR CHRISSIE & JOHN JACKSON

by Captain Duarte Rato on Bazaruto Island

Over the last 6 days we had Chrissie and John Jackson from the States and despite a slow Marlin bite we had great fun and some good fishing. The first day four days were great fun and we raised a number of Marlin, one estimated very close to a 1000 pounds. We released one about 150 lbs, a sailfish and got a good number of game fish including dorado, wahoo, yellowfin tuna, skipjack, bonito, great barracuda and queen mackerel.

Our 5thĀ day started up north at lighthouse and we had not set the spread for more than 15 minutes when both, the left short and long go simultaneously. What a sight as the two Marlin jumped in together in our wake and what pandemonium as we tried to clear the deck and make sure the lines did not cross over. After that initial chaos we had everything under control and we decided to deal with the smallest fish first which John was fighting stand up. We made short work of it and soon we had the 150 pounder by the boat, tagged it and let it go. Now it was time to deal with the bigger fish which Chrissie was fighting from the fighting chair. The fish was deep but as soon as we got on top of it and applied some more heat it come up and gave us an absolute fantastic jumping display in the beautiful morning light. We got it close to theĀ  boat but it was a hard fish and with 40 pounds of drag (as much as Chrissie wanted to go) it still took us another 10 minutes to get it under control by the side of the bat for some photos. We eventually let it go and called it 400 pounds. What a start to the day!!!

EPIC start to the Bazaruto Marlin Season by Duarte Rato

Duarte Rato Bazaruto

EPIC start to the Bazaruto Marlin Season by Duarte Rato

Even though we only really starting the Marlin Season of the Bazaruto archipelago on the third week of September, we had our good friend and loyal client Carl Jankowitz come up with his family during the last week of August to have an early go. August is a windy month and this year was no exception and we only fished 2 days over the course of the week, but they were EPIC to say the least, especially this early. On the first day and after catching some game fish on light tackle we hooked a Marlin about 250 lbs on a #30 pound stick and a TLD 25. Unfortunately it broke off 55 minutes later. We set the konas on the heavy gear and got some yellowfin tuna and just before lines in had a crash strike on the short corner lure followed by a sizzling run. Carl got in the chair and brought in a frisky 250 lbs Black Marlin for a release. The next we caught some serious size wahoo, yellowfin and then missed a Marlin mid morning. We persisted and just before noon we hooked a 300 + pounder that gave us some awesome jumps and a really hard time. It took us just under an hour to get it alongside the boat for a release. 2 Marlin out of 4 for Carl Jankowitz in two days this early in the season is really encouraging and we cannot wait to get out there come late September!!!
