17 September Durban Surf Conditions

Surfing on Tuesday 17 Sep 2024 in Durban by Adam Kamdar of Township Hyper

Surfing on Tuesday 17 Sep 2024 in Durban by Adam Kamdar of Township Hyper: Adam opens the day with more of a surf report from the Durban Golden Mile as the ocean reveals herself playful and fun. In fact, the sea temperature is warmer than the air temperature at the moment.

Durban 7am

Great for surfing and diving but not so great for shad anglers. Thank you for the update Adam Kamdar in Durban.

Looking forward to hearing from The Bear and the divers who must be out there already taking advantage of the settled sea conditions today.

Check back for more information as the day unfolds.

Port Shepstone 9am

Alan checks in from The Block in Port Shepstone on a beautiful surfing, fishing and diving day in KZN #surfing #fishing #diving #conditions #report

Our second report for the day comes from Alan in Port Shepstone as he gives us the low down on the lekka conditions the ocean has delivered today. The waves are smallish but fun-looking. And launching boats should not present too many problems. The water is clean too. The rivers have not been affected by the local rainfall.

There is a bit of a system developing over the middle of the country today. Unbelievably it’s spill off from what is causing Europe to flood so badly right now. And even more unbelievably this could very easily be blamed on that huge volcano erupting last year. Which caused an extra 10% of moisture to infiltrate the atmosphere. Meaning that floods this year, will be able to be 10% more powerful!

Sardine n Sighting Maps

It has been a fantastic sardine run this memorable 2024. And all the action has been logged right here on The Sardine News. This year’s map has been viewed 180,000 times and keeps growing.

Which led us to decide to keep the map live. And keep adding unique marine animal sightings and events. That occurs non-stop all year round. This year we started to log more whale and dolphin sightings. And we even had a shipwreck! And a freaking tornado!

These events will from now on be included in the Sardine News Sightings Map for 2024. And on the 1 January 2025, we shall start all over again.

Here are the links to existing and past Sardine Sighting Maps. Great for chilly day like today to research. With instructions to install The Sardine News right on your phone or desktop.

East vs West as the Winds Battle it Out in KZN

East vs West Winds in Full Swing

East vs West as the Winds Battle it Out in KZN

East vs West as the Winds Battle it Out in KZN

Adam Kamdar reports in from a blustery Durban morning down on the beach today. It is not a very inviting ocean out there at the moment as the east tries its level best to outblow the west that is coming tomorrow.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y_cgsdUm7s?rel=0

This is the windy month of August and it doesn’t really get better until we are well into spring.

If you also don’t want to get out there today, but you are out and about, pop into Township Hyper and check out the new kit. Loomis reels are on special. The Warrior and the Shockwave. Okuma have a bunch of new rods on the showroom floor. And there is the practical Mebao range of tackle storage solutions.

You can learn more and get in touch easily on the Township Hyper Facebook Page. Click HERE to get there!

Surfing

We have been mentioning the onslaught of perfect conditions and waves at Jeffreys Bay recently. And here is some hard evidence of the good times.

More surfing at https://brucifire.co.za.

Mozambique

Tofo, Inhambane: The big high pressure sitting over the east of South Africa pushed our long-awaited cold front right out to sea. Where it turned into a powerful onshore wind here instead of the offshore we need.

The divers are out there but surfing and fishing are gonna be tough over the next few days. Luckily we have this report from Duarte further up in Vilanculos, to keep busy with for now.

FishBazaruto.com had some dates to shift around resulting in the 22 to 28 November becoming available. This is peak season big momma fishing, follow the link to learn more.

Peak Season Dates Available – 22nd to 28th November 2024 – FishBazaruto.com

If you happen to be in Inhambane and more specifically Tofo…Wednesday evenings are Timbila Evenings!

Sardine Maps

Having intel to make the right decisions can save you hours and hours of frivolous  sardine hunting. We have taken great care to log the activity of each  sardine run since 2021. These records are available for anyone to look at.

If you study the maps year to year, you will see that right now we are only just in the middle of good  sardine conditions. And that in previous years catches were made right into the summer months.

Water Temp Drop 7am on this chilly 8 July 2024

Water Temp Drop 7am this Chilly Monday 8 July 2024

Water Temp Drop 7am on this chilly 8 July 2024

Water Temp Drop 7am on this chilly 8 July 2024: big thanks to Adam for being up and at it for the arrival of this impressive cold front coming in strong from the south.

A radical water temperature is the big news today. Right down to 16 degrees Celsius. But this is right out at the buoy. The inshore water is still quite manageable at around 21.

There have been sightings of sardines in Port Edward this morning already. And netting boats are trying at Scottburgh. We will keep you updated right here all day today.

Berg Winds

Air temperatures are right up at this early KZN morning. As the first gusts of offshore winds prepare us for the big cold blow that is just around the corner. When the upper air here starts to move in the direction of the rotation of the impending front, it drops in altitude fast and it warms up. This is a Berg Wind. Not always toasty as today’s. And generally the warmer they are, the bigger the blow that is coming!

But tomorrow says east winds and conditions?!

So unless a big cold front does come through, we are in for these howling offshore winds all day long today!

Surfing Today

Obviously, the surf is cooking because it’s Monday. The Berg Winds predicted by the available weather models were put at up to 30 knots or so. I thought it was a typo or some other error. But these strong Berg Winds will paint an incredibly inviting ocean in the morning.

These are ultimate surfing conditions. And they normally don’t last long. But today the weather models say all day West winds!

Fishing

Well just about anybody could cast a spoon over the backline with this wind behind them. And with so many snoek and garrick around, this would be time well spent.

And once again, please shad fishermen, you guys need to be cleaning up after yourselves, right?

Tides

Tides are huge again today so be careful wherever and whenever you go near the ocean.

Gallery

These photographs were taken yesterday the 7 July 2024. Sardines were netted at Saints and at Shelley Base.

6 July 2024, 7 am Sardine Conditions Report by Adam in Durban

6 July 2024, 7 am #Sardine Conditions Report by Adam in #Durban #KZN #South #Africa

Good morning, Durban. It’s just after 7 am on Saturday, the 6th of July 2024. We experienced a spring high tide at 4 am, and the next spring low tide will be at 10 am. The forecast from Windguru indicates fresh offshore winds throughout the day, high swells, with temperatures around 21 degrees Celsius. How has Windguru been performing for you?

Do you find it accurate? Please leave your feedback in the comments below. This is the tides update for fishing. The wind is blowing at 13 kilometers per hour from the west, with a chilly temperature of 12 degrees Celsius in Durban this morning. Wave net indicates the water temperature is still dropping, yet remains too warm for sardines at around 22 degrees Celsius.

We need it to drop to 19 degrees Celsius. The atmospheric pressure in Durban is 1020 hPa and rising. The most recent sardine sightings were near Warner Beach, but only birds were spotted, with little to no sign of shoals. Thus, the trail has gone cold for the sardines due to Durban’s warm waters.

Next, we’ll present the sunrise view.

This is today’s sunrise. As visible by the flags, there’s a light offshore wind smoothing the sea near the shore. However, the sea conditions are rough with high swells offshore. Consequently, many boats have altered their deep-sea fishing plans, opting to fish closer to shore, backline, near the stadium, Virginia, targeting snoek, among others.

Here, one of the boats is seen fishing, and numerous canoes are out for morning exercise. The conditions are beautifully calm at Point Beach, Ushaka area.

And this view is towards Blue Lagoon.

Have a spectacular day and stay updated with thesardine.co.za.

“Thank you Adam!”

8am 3 July 2024 Sardines and Conditions Report for KZN

The stable weather and sea conditions continue through the neap tide cycle as reported today. Right from the ocean. Adam and Nigel are out there catching delicious Natal Snoek right now!

Nigel with his first fish from this idyllic KZN Winter morning off the Blue Lagoon.

Sardines’

Are very hard to find right now. We scoured out every beach and vay from Mzamba in the Transkei all the way to Port Shepstone. We saw many sardines. But way out to sea. Where the dolphins and other predators were simply gorging themselves on the confused and exhausted sardines.

These sardines still don’t know where they went wrong and are just forging ahead in the hopes of breaking through into the sardine Eden. Like the rest of the population who went the right way. Up the West Coast. To spawn and breed and repopulate.

Shad

The shad are distracted by these wayward sardines that refuse to come close. And they are also out there chasing the shoals. Making for some very frustrated mombakkies looking fisherfolk up and down the coast.

At least the beaches stay clean when the shad fishermen aren’t trashing the places.

Garrick

The Master Watermen website has shown some outsized garrick falling to the spear. On average, they certainly seem to be bigger this year so far. However, some real small ones are also being caught and kept. Which is not going to work for next year’s garrick visit. And another reminder that the bag limit is 2 per person.

Kob

There are kob of all sizes lurking everywhere, mainly in the shallows. Wherever shad were biting in the daytime, you will find kob there in the night time.

We also caught this lovely pan-sized koblet in the Umzimkulu Estuary this week. By Wouter and caught on a lure.

Conditions

Are going to continue to ve excellent. And this cold front that has been promised to us will hopefully be on time tomorrow. And will airbrush the ocean into perfection all over again. And the cycle continues.

All we really need, is some cold water!
