The Red, the Dead, and The Med…amazing fishing in Israeli waters

Amazing fishing in Israeli waters

Israel features no less than four seas – The Red, The Dead, The Med…and the Sea of Galilee. But it’s the Med that has the fish!

David Kosta, living and fishing in Israel  – has been catching amazing fish in the Mediterranean Sea for ages now?! David lived and spearfished South African waters for many years – and is now back in Israel and is the Rob Allen and Mydo Lures distributor for the country. What is really amazing though, is that he is catching some of the very same species we get back here in Southern Africa. (Jules Verne’s subterranean channel maybe?)

Featuring ‘couta and monster amberjack in this insert, David has perfected the art of big baits fished deep down. He has used Mydo lures for many years and has perfected the art of deep dropping big baits for big fish.

Scomberomerous Commersoni - 'couta, king mackeral, tanguiguie, spanish, narrow barred...but this one was caught in the Med!

Below is a picture of the rig these guys use to fish deep. The number 4.5 Mydo – get’s the bait down deep yet it still has an action – especially on the drift in current – in waters up to 40m or more.

Why fishermen should stay humble – by Brandon Parsons

Why fishermen should stay humble – by Brandon Parsons

“After landing your first few really big sharks and fish in your life – your confidence builds and builds – until that day…” – Brandon Parsons

Feeling strong enough to handle whatever the ocean throws your way, out goes the bait – the perfect bait, perfect trace – and perfect tackle…and see what happens…in these two Ground Zero videos shot in the heat of the action…deep in the Southern Cape, near Mossel Bay…

The Saratoga featured in this clip can go 20kg’s or more – that’s enough drag to fight a 1000lb marlin with!? With the braid technology these days meaning you can fill your reel to the max – hundreds of metres – you can normally turn anything with power like this. But this fish got other ideas – eventually the pressure was too much for the gorilla hook – straightened!

This is a serious hook that has been annihilated by the combination of the Saratoga drag and the huge fish on the other end. Brandon Parsons

And the next instalment…same place…Brandon Parsons in deep in the Southern Cape…

And the Torium in this clip can pump up to more than 15kg’s – these are two monster fish being tangled with here!

To experience this type of action for yourself – call Brandon 0n 079 058 8722 or email umzimkulu@gmail.com

We can arrange your fishing adventures and guides, accommodation, transport, bait and tackle…to this amazing and shark infested fishing area. We release all our fish (except dinner) and target mainly oversize sharks, huge kob and steenbras.

Bazaruto news: Matt & Nick at it again!

Bazaruto news: Matt & Nick at it again.

We first met Matt & Nick in early July when they come up from Maputo for a couple of fishing days to target sailfish. Seeing the water was green on the inside we decided to head out deep on our second day and they raised a 700 pound Blue Marlin and got a 72 kg Yellowfin tuna that we believe is the biggest ever caught on Bazaruto. Anyway this time they come for Marlin and they had a great trip. On their second day they raised 3, lost a 600 pounder right by the boat and then proceed to release a fish about 300 pounds. They finished it off with a 250 pound fish on the last day.

River Cruising on the weekend…

River cruising on the weekend…

The Umzimkulu was out yesterday with some of the original river pirates enjoying some river cruising – John Collinson and Lawrence Wurznip…brought a fishing rod along to test out some new lures…and a cooler box for the fish…?

Port
John Collinson, Johan Papenfuss, John Fever and Lawrence Wurznip.
Starboard
Sadie Papenfuss, Alison Winroe, Megan and Dave Candy…

Although we did try really hard in the crystal clear incoming tide, throwing dropshots and flash lures – we never got a hit. John says it’s far too clean in the river for fishing and Lawrence agreed, both speculating also that the mouth will most likely close in the next week or two. It’s bad news for the skiboaters, but for the estuarine anglers, its fantastic news. The fish generally get more and more active, the longer the mouth is close. And the garrick run usually starts at about the same time the mouth starts closing. We will start targeting garrick shortly…book your spot here.

There is a rumour circulating Port Shepstone, of a 30 kg kob taken off the wall just on the inside of the river mouth…last week?! Our investigative instincts have kicked in and we will surely have some more about this phantom fish shortly. We have a name.

In the meantime, it’s the weekend so you can catch us down on the river, at Spiller’s Wharf…river cruising from lunch time ’til dark…
