The great KZN nurdle disaster

The nurdles came from off of this ship

The great KZN nurdle disaster

Cameron Johnstone the admin of Salt Fishing South Africa group on Facebook has compiled an excellent report on the great KZN nurdle disaster, which occurred recently.

MSC Shipping are squarely in the spotlight as they allowed this ecological tragedy to unfold unchecked. The nurdles, which are little plastic beads heading for industry, spilled out into the Durban harbour entrance, as the MSC ship ran aground in inclement weather. The ship was saved but when it drove into the harbour, it crashed into another ship, and the containers carrying the nurdles ruptured as they tumbled off the MSC ship and into the water. Literally nothing was done by MSC or port authorities or anyone, to curb the spill.

This has happened before elsewhere in the world, costing millions in clean-up operations. Here in Durban, the powers that be, and the perpetrators, simply do nothing. For days after the incident, the nurdles were allowed to spill out unchecked. As many as three containers full hit the water. Allegedly only one was recovered, and no-one is forthcoming with information at all.

Cameron’s report is detailed and accurate. In a spate of admirable investigative journalism, Cameron and friends uncovered the series of still photos, illustrating the incident in full colour. He deserves any support or assistance he can get. Right now the nurdles have spread up and down the KZN coast, into the Transkei, and even further way down deep into Cape waters.

Cameron and his efforts have resulted a cleanup operation to remove as many nurdles as possible, from the environment right now. This is where you can help. At this relatively early stage, we can hopefully make a difference in the overall percentage of nurdles spilled out into the ocean. They do float so – head on down to your local beach and start collecting! Keep them. Follow Cameron’s group for further instructions.

The harm that nurdles can do, aside from the obvious as in fish eating them, can be found in detail, in Cameron’s report at the link below:

Spearo species comp on in Durban today 5 Nov 2017

Jason Heyne checks in with his ever reliable spearfishing report for the KZN coastline…

The diving conditions this week improved quite a bit compared to the last three weeks. Plenty bait ball action on the go north and south. Saturday a moderate to fresh north east blows with swell running at 1.4m. Sunday light variable wind all day with minimal swell. Viz was reported both north and south. Biggest fish of the week goes to Stephen with a 14 kg garrick and club merit fish Quintin White with a 9kg blacktip kingie. Our species comp is on for tomorrow and I expect some decent fish to be weighed in. Good luck to all entrants. Weigh in is at Freedivers Renaldo Rd at 3pm. As always dive safe and straight spears

Cell C Goodwave 2017 – Watching The Horizon

Cell C Goodwave 2017 – Watching The Horizon

Craig Jarvis keeping us up to date for the upcoming event…Thanks Jarvi!

New Pier, Durban – The recent fast and wild storm swell has passed, and we’re all looking forward to the next clean, deep-lined ‘Goodwave swell’ to show up at New Pier.

The Cell C Goodwave official swell forecaster Spike from Wavescape had this to say about the last swell. “That swell contains a lot of mixed up directions and intervals and sizes. These swells straight off the end of the wind fetch will always create good individual waves every now and then, but with a lot of weak, and bumpy waves in between.”

According to Spike there are bits and pieces on the maps for the upcoming weeks.

“The storms are fragmented and lacking uniformity and directional fetch for Durban,” reckoned Spike. “The high pressure systems are still ruling the roost, sitting too far south. A small storm does form off the coast on Friday, and has a small chance of upgrading into something interesting next week, but it’s early days for that. The other system is a giant storm just north of the ice shelf that blasts a SSE fetch towards Durban this Thursday. However it’s a five-day travel away, and it must pass through the Roaring Forties and several cold fronts before it makes landfall next week, with the swell direction also likely to be too southerly.”

Contest Director Jason Ribbink is confident that the Cell C Goodwave will run within a fairly short period of time.

“As Spike mentioned, we are not looking for those swells that have so many different variables, with different wave heights and directions,” said Ribbink. “We’re waiting for that classic day when the New Pier is just perfect, big barrels all day. When it comes the event will run.”

As an added bonus on the day, Cell C Durban is going to be offering free WiFi on the beach and around the contest site all day. So apart from watching the action live you can get all the replays, commentary and scores on your phone or device for free. This is pretty cool. If you happen to miss a 10-point ride or something else just as remarkable, then it’s going to be available for you on your phone, and you can access via Cell C’s free WiFi.

Cell C Goodwave Stays On Hold For Upcoming Swell

Cell C Goodwave 2017

Cell C Goodwave Stays On Hold

Durban – The contest organisers of the Cell C Goodwave have made the decision to keep the event on hold, and not call a Green Light for the forecast Monday 15th / Tuesday 16th May swell.

According to the event’s official swell forecaster Spike from www.wavescape.co.za, the storm comes in hard and fast and right up against the coast, bringing wild seas and stormy weather. By the time conditions are good, the swell is dropping off.

“Although there is going to be a lot of swell on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, it’s looking mixed up with wind chop and swell coming in together, in other words, the short, medium and longer period swell coming straight off the conveyor belt and into the coast. There will be waves that are big enough, and perhaps individually good rides, but it’s not the perfect, lined up swell that the Goodwave thrives on.”

“We want a swell that has travelled a little longer, and comes in as clean, pure groundswell lines, rather than a storm swell right on top of us,” he said.

In the absence of a good swell approaching, here is the Cell C Goodwave teaser video to display exactly what sort of waves we are looking for the run this event.

The contest organisers, along with Spike, will continue to monitor the early season swells to find the best possible day to run this event. The tournament has a one-year waiting period that ends on 31 December 2017, so there is plenty of time and opportunity to get the right day to run it. Invited surfers are reminded to be on alert and watch the Cell C Goodwave website and Facebook page for updates.

Rated as a World Surf League Specialty Event, the contest costs one Rand to enter, and has a massive first prize of R100k, the largest domestic prize for the sport in South Africa. The contest also has jetski assist for all competitors.

The Cell C Goodwave is a South African Surfing Legends event, with Jason Ribbink the contest director.

California Dreaming, overlooking New Pier on the beachfront, will host the competition on the day. Oakley and Sun International are both supporting sponsors.
