Shad bait up by Craig Sinclair

Shad bait up by Craig Sinclair

Craig Sinclair aka Baconovich, takes us through a simple yet effective shad bait on a single hook trace. A double hook trace also features in this instructional fishing video.

Shad, or elf, or taylor, or bluefish – come thick and fast this time of the year – just before the supposed arrival of the supposed sardines. They provide great entertainment and thousands of anglers hit the bays and points up and down the KZN South Coast, also known as the Hibiscus Coast (luckily not the “sardine coast”).

Bigger gamefish like garrick / leervis, salmon / kob, Queen Mackeral  /  Natal Snoek, Brusher / White Musselcracker…have also been known to gulp down a shad bait on the drift, presented like Craig’s bait in the video. 3/0 or 4/0 hooks mean you stand a chance again these chance encountered trophy fish.

Enjoy the video…

Deep barrel by Fred!

Deep barrel by Fred!

image

The evergreen Greg Wigmore (Fred) caught deep in the barrel on the KZN South Coast. This shot, taken by pro photographer and producer, Craig Sinclair aka Baconovich, was shot in amongst shoals of fleeing bait fish as they were being hammered by predators.
It is a dodgy time of year to be chasing shots like this, but it paid for big time for Fred and Baconovich.

It’s been absolutely cooking at all the usual spots. Saints. Uvongo. Southbroom. Ramsgate. Port Edward. Glenmore. The fact is, that when one spot fires, they all do.

Check out Shonalanga Adventures for safe and reasonably priced options for surfing the KZN South Coast.

South Coast surf shooting!

John van Reenen
John van Reenen

Craig Sinclair operates under the handle of Baconovich (c) when he shoots surfing. Here he features three strong images – the surfing being done by John van Reenen, Gary Maisch and Greg Defillipi. Early this very morning on the lower south coast – in amongst the shad and shad fishermen’s lines and baits!

Earlier on, Greg was in the water when the beach erupted in screams as two teenagers were swept away in the strong current. Greg was quick to the rescue and pulled them both to safety.

Craig Sinclair…and the squaretail kob!

Good marks for good attendance…Craig Sinclair spent three nights fishing all night long on the cold Umzimkulu this weekend…
…and this his reward…a 6kg Squaretailed Kob, many of which appear to have been spawning in the estuary this weekend.
We encountered a large patch of milky white water full of salmon looking fish…whilst trolling in the very early morning on Saturday. It’s the first time we have actually seen fish spawning in the river – very uplifting – the water has been clean and warm and conducive.
