SARDINES in the TRANSKEI, UFOs, KZN Conditions and more aerial surveillance: it wasn’t only us that got caught by sardine surprise today. The gannets also hit a miss and were nowhere to be seen. A rare occurrence given that the gannets absoliuteoy live for these tasty fishies.

UFOs vs. Sardines: Well, there has been zero news from the sardine spy network since Kevin was tracking a large shoal on its way to Hole in the Wall and Port St Johns from his base in the very southern Transkei.
Aerial contributor Rogan Brent was up in the air in that area all day yesterday and here are the fruits of his efforts.

Tweni 2s Today – Surfing Contest at Umtentweni: this event has gained notable momentum since it’s inception as a fun weekend for surfers and families, all those years ago.
Now it’s more like the Gunston 500!
So much going on – all the while, teams of two battle it out in today’s perfect waves and conditions, for the first prize of a bucket of money! ANd a whole lot of fun!
“and it’s big welcome back to the Sardine News this beautiful 24th of May 2025 the twenty twos at Umtentweni is on today and the waves are cooking whole bunch of surfers gonna be doing their best for the big bucket of money first prize right we’re gonna go all over the country today so you’re gonna have to strap in hold on tight and off we go welcome back to the Sardine News all the fish and more fish and more fish and more fish 5 4 3 2 1 that’s it what’s the point wrong board wrong board wrong board okay here comes the aerial material let’s see if he’s loosened up a bit ooh putting some effort into it oh no I’m aiming aiming verkeerd bang Shot oh this looks a little bit better hey a lot better for a Friday morning Noorsekloof Point bit of a uh serious wind on it hey isn’t that beautiful an unwritten wave Sea’s too rough got a heavy undercurrent 3 fisherman I know how’s it chaps this is Kevin at Qora Mouth just north of Mazeppa Bay Southern Transkei well major movement moving past here uh we’ve had a large shoal and I’m gonna say it’s much more than a pilot shoal um has already passed through Nabaha it’s up near Dwesa which is near the Mbashi River The Haven Hotel reported in that there were lots of birds there yesterday so I’m expecting this shoal um to come in a lot closer we got an east wind blowing today which should cool the water down considerably the inshore water is sitting at about 22 yesterday but it’s gonna cool down gonna bring them in off the shelf and they should be reaching Port St John’s probably in the next two days but should be going through Hole in the Wall anytime this weekend so waiting for some good footage but yeah game on guys game on”

Starting with today! And Adam’s
On a scale of one to ten, today is an 11 plus. The ocean is big and glassy, painted smooth by a brisk and crisp offshore wind. That will blow right through this low tide and into mid-morning. Where it might hang about or swing gently onshore, as is predicted. High tide after lunch.

From the Windy.com animation, you can see the two cold fronts that we are in the middle of. That next one is only due mid-next week.
Surf
The SSW swell at 14 seconds will be fantastic at certain spots up and down the coast. Durban town looks a bit flat today. The Tweni 2’s surfing contest at Umtentweni is staged for tomorrow down the south coast, and the surf is going to be perfect down there!
A rising barometer at 1030 means east conditions on their way. Afternoon onshores are an everyday thing now. Luckily, the ocean recovers from the chop overnight.
Fish
Except for the lack of shad in KZN, the fishing is excellent. Luckily, this recent cold front might excite them shad all into the same sardine fever that has gotten hold of us.
Garrick and kingfish have been grabbing the headlines, along with medium to small sized koblets. Out at sea, couta is the name of the game. The recent UKFC kayak on the north coast of KZN event had phenomenal catches with a dozen fish around or over 20 kgs. Get your MYDOs in the Sardine News tackle store online.
Currents
And finally the Agulhas current…is screaming and we can clearly see how the counter current carrying the sardines has crept so far up into the Transkei. And is literally cut off now. We can see the Natal Pulse dynamic in full swing as the continental shelf diverts the Agulhas into a literal whirlpool.

Today’s update includes news from St. Lucia and Kei Mouth and a bunch of stops in between. Things are goooood. KZN in Natal is actually Heaven on Earth and it sure makes up for the adverse cyclonic and cut-off low systems that we have to deal with in the wet season.
Shad down south are a great indicator that the sardines are imminent. What we need right now is for the waters inshore to cool. The big south swells to build. And most importantly….the aloes need to be in full bloom.
I have noticed out aloes here at the Umzimkulu Marina are starting to form flowers. Maybe another two to three weeks and those babies will burn orange.
In the meantime, we are all having to contend with what is obviously by now, a late sardine run. Not very late, yet. But check the Sardine Sighting Maps on The Sardine News website and you will get the full picture.
