Sardine Netters head South: yesterday saw a thriving ocean out off Leisure Bay down on the lower KZN South Coast. Sardines are suspected. It is still way early in any sardine season and there definitely could be more on the way right now.

Jump Tides and Conditions 29 July 2024 at 8AM: the jump tides have just started. Today the tides move an hour. And tomorrow two hours! Wednesday jumps another two hours and by Thursday’s added hour, we are back into low-tide mornings! Just like that.

Over to Adam…on the Durban Golden Mile, in Golden Hour!

Jump Tides

Every time we move into neap tides, the tides start to act weird. During spring tides, the tides hardly move at all. 15 or 20 minutes. And consistently stay slow like this right through the springs.

Then all of a sudden, the tides move a lot! Like and hour yesterday. Again an hour today. And tomorrow (Tuesday) the tides jump a full two hours. And then again the next day. On Thursday they start to retreating back to normal with one hour. This will steadily drop as we move into springs.

The main good thing about the jump tides however, is that they bring about low tide mornings again. Favoured tide conditions for surfers, fishermen and divers.

Choose your tides carefully.

Cold front hits Durban

Cold front hits Durban: Durban absolutely loves a cold front. The city beaches are angled perfectly that a stiff south west is almost directly offshore. This paints a very pretty picture. But just around the corner, on The Bluff and down the South Coast, the ocean is wild today!

And even further south we have JBay going right off the Richter Scale! West winds upwards of 20 knots have been airbrushing the strong ground swell prevalent there at the moment. These are all the pics we have at this stage. But Brucifire is on the scene. And so we can all look forward to seeing the waves on his channel and website tomorrow.

07h00 26 July 2024 Adam checks in from South Beach Sardine Netters launching NOW! : it turns out that yesterday was a hard day for the sardine netters. Just not enough fish!

But the launching has commenced this morning with Adam covering the action from the ground…over to Adam…

South Beach 7am

Looks to be an interesting day with absolutely perfect sardine conditions including the water temperature which is definitely on the plunge. Not quite the 19 degrees that the sardines are used to. But nearing 21 or less in some places as the cold water upswells in patches and moves about.

It is these pockets of cold water that will be holding the remaining sardines. And they could be anywhere at anytime.

North Winds

Are going to paint the ocean a pretty picture all morning. Swings to east later. Hardly gets up at all. These are prime winter conditions in KZN.

The next big blow from the south is only gonna be on Sunday or so. Between now and then we have peachy weather day after day.
