First timers hit gold – TWICE!!!

In from Captain Duarte Rato in Bazaruto waters…

On the 27 September we had a charter with a great bunch of guys from South Africa and on their first ever Marlin fishing experience they took gold not once but twice!!!

Just before noon we get a frisky Black Marlin estimated at just over 200 pounds take the long rigger lure on the #50 stand-up tackle and Tom was into a good sweat to bring his first ever billfish release.

A short while later we caught two small 5 kilo yellowfin that we quickly bridled as live bait and not even an hour later a hungry Black comes in for the kill on the short bait right at the transom. After a short drop back the 20/0 circle hook finds the corner and Douglas Gain jumps in the chair to also score his first ever billfish release on a fish we estimated at just under 200 pounds.

Calling Elvis…

Elvis!
Elvis!

Joining our network of spies…We would like to welcome Elvis Mandlate, stationed in the 2M shop…right alongside the fish market in Tofo…

With his Android phone he will be on the spot when the local fishermen bring in their catches.

The fishing is now back to normal which is nothing short of fantastic – this time of the year, and into summer. Shoal couta and tuna abound – and some bigger “crocodiles” in the 25 kg plus class have been spotted by the divers. But the real attraction now are the beeeg marlin. And it looks to be a good season for them. Water still slightly coldish but getting cleaner by the week.

Amberjack!

Shoals of Amberjack in the 10kg class have been swarming the points like Da Rocha and Barra.
The market is full of these awesome fighting fish – the local spearos are having a blast.

This pic is not from here, but from Hibberdene on the KZN South Coast where some of the biggest Amberjack in the world hide out.
