South West Winds in KZN Today 25 Sep 2024 by Adam #kzn #sea #conditions

Better late than never! This morning’s report by Adam at 8am took some time to get online finally. Let’s just say some fishing got in the way!

The lovely South West winds have painted the Indian Ocean a pretty picture. Especially in the Durban Beach area where this wind is practically direct offshore. Conditions that surfers cherish.

The SW wind also makes good for anglers. The high pressure of the east systems is more favourable for catching most fish. However, the SW low-pressure systems can also turn it on. Garrick, snoek and things like these clean and clear inshore conditions.

But it’s the skin divers that revel in the SW winds the most. The North East winds cause an upwelling of cold nutrient-filled water to the surface (ruining the viz). In contrast, the South West systems calm the surface and settle the sea. Ink blue water moves right back over the cold and underwater becomes crystal palace. Check out the Master Watermen website and YouTube Channel as listed below, for more news from down deep.

Port Shepstone

Ice-cold Drakensberg water has arrived in the Sandspit in Port Shepstone. This has been occurring over the last few days. It is icy in that water. However, the ocean is at 20 Degrees which will help moderate things. Bear in mind that the first meter or so may be ice cold. But, here is an active halocline moving with the tides. Below the halocline, is the warm blue water that is trapped in the deeper holes and channels. This is where the fish are actively feeding. Follow the halocline!

Sardines n Sighting Maps

It has been a fantastic  sardine run this memorable 2024. And all the action has been logged right here on The Sardine News. This year’s map has been viewed 182,000 times and keeps growing.

Which led us to decide to keep the map live. And keep adding unique marine animal sightings and events. That occurs non-stop all year round. This year we started to log more whale and dolphin sightings. And we even had a shipwreck! And a freaking tornado!

These events will from now on be included in the Sardine News Sightings Map for 2024. And on the 1 January 2025, we shall start all over again.

Here are the links to existing and past Sardine Sighting Maps. Great for chilly day like today to research. With instructions to install The Sardine News right on your phone or desktop.

Sunny Skies and Bluebottle Alert for KZN

Sunny Skies and Bluebottle Alert on Durban Beaches today 24 Sep 24

Sunny Skies and Bluebottle Alert for KZN

Sunny Skies and Bluebottle Alert for KZN: Adam kindly alerts us to the ever-painful bluebottle sting. This occurs when there are extended east wind blows. This is the second day of a relentless onshore ‘Beasterly Easterly.’ It steers the sailing stingers to KZN and surrounding waters. This wind also causes an upwelling of cold water to rise to the surface. And has an adverse affect on seaweed which it seems to amass on the shore.

Bluebottle Alert

Bluebottle stings can be really bad, but most are not. Some people are particularly sensitive and need a quick run across the drag and into Addington Hospital. But most times the pain goes away on it’s own in about 15 minutes.

Treatments include white vinegar. And the juice of a beach aloe, if you can find one.

If you get stung…

Be careful to remove the blue stingers from your body. This can be tricky what with waves and surf crashing all around you. Leaving the water is your best option. Where you can attract the attention of a lifeguard or someone to help remove the stingers. Which can really stick! And when they come loose, are all over again looking for another victim.

The stingers inject a kind of poison into your skin and flesh. It is excruciatingly painful. Especially if one gets stuck in your bathing suit or wetsuit. I have been stung in the mouth before and man-oh-man are your lips and tongue highly sensitive places! Getting stung in an existing open wound is absolutely nightmarish and that has also happened to me.

Which is why I penned up a book called Bitten. It’s a tongue-in-cheek travel guide on how not to get bitten in Southern Africa. It’s a fun read and you can pre- order a copy right here on this website – thesardine.co.za. Email Sean on umzimkulu@gmail.com to do it the easy way.

The book makes a great gift to someone you might know is traveling to our corner of the globe.

Sunny Skies and a Sea Breeze in KZN today 23 Sep 2024

Perch Underwater at the Umzimkulu Marina Jetty KZN Today

Sunny Skies and a Sea Breeze in KZN today 23 Sep 2024

Sunny Skies and a Sea Breeze in KZN today 23 Sep 2024: Conditions were that good. Plus big swirls around the jetty combined. This got a camera in the water at the Umzimkulu marina this morning. Just one argument with the local African Pied Wagtails who insist it’s their boat we are working from?!

The camera settled for barely a minute. The first apparition materialised into a handsome perch swimming straight in unsuspecting at the camera. Full frontal. He swam around and was spotted a few more times. But then the real GHOST appeared. Deftly camouflaged and only really given away by sheer size. This was a big spotted grunter, and he too was ‘spotted’ more than once.

The fish are all feeding on the sand. I suspect they are all looking for the newly arrived river prawns. I also spotted these prawns when walking down the jetty to the boat. I saw one about 3 inches long – the absolute perfect-sized bait for these small-mouthed fish. A little circle hook in the tail and we are in the game for the Ghost!

Umzimkulu Adrenalin

Can take you fishing here in these crystal clear winter waters. Stay at the Umzimkulu Marina to be right on the water and the action. We have boats and kayaks and all sorts. And the fishing off the jetty (as can been from the video) is the real deal.

Durban @8am by Adam Kamdar

Holidaymakers can revel in the sun today! They gonna have to deal with a strengthening North Easter as is so typical of the weather systems this time of year. The NE looks to hang around all week. Luckily with the odd break between blasts.

Thank you Adam!

Perfect Sunday 22 September 2024

22 September 2024 Perfect Sunday

Perfect Sunday 22 September 2024

Perfect Sunday 22 September 2024: what an amazing result! The ocean has maintained it’s composure throughout this cold spell. Rewarding all who braved it into the water. Or near it – yesterday. And today has been your just reward. The ocean here in KZN and in Eastern Cape is in top condition.

We have warm water. The sun is shining bright and drying us out. No wind today. Beach day! Ok it rather chilly but we will take it over the last few days rain. And it looks like more tomorrow so this is the beach window!

Over to Adam…

Surf Cooking in Durban, Van Reenen’s Pass is OPEN

Surf is cooking in Durban and the Berg is opening up again slowly

Surf Cooking in Durban by Adam Kamdar

Surf Cooking in Durban by Adam Kamdar: As much as inland is too cold even to go outside, we only get down to about 10 degrees Celsius here in Durban.
Which seems within range for the surfers in Durban town…

Durban 07h30 by Adam

Surf Cooking in Durban today by Adam Kamdar: Luckily for Jack O Neil inventing surfing wetsuits all those cold years ago! For today is even considered crowded as Durban town surfers brave the cold conditions.

Well, the water is 21. And on land it is about 14! Stay in the water all day!

The very short swell period and the ESE direction create the consistent sets. These sets keep coming in at North Beach and surrounds. There are non-stop waves! And these conditions will last into the afternoon. As the light SW just keeps airbrushing it all smoother and smoother each hour.

With a beautiful low tide late morning, it can even get better than it looks right now.

Thank you Adam!

Thank you Adam for visuals and story this icy morning…

Van Reenens Pass is OPEN

After many people and their vehicles were stuck spending the whole night hemmed in on the Van Reenen’s Pass, things finally got back to a reasonable level of ordinariness today.

Only one lane is open, but dual direction traffic is being facilitated.

WEATHER UPDATE: DISASTER MANAGEMENT TEAMS COORDINATING RELIEF EFFORTS AS LEVEL 8 SNOW WARNING ISSUED FOR KZN

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) convened a Joint Operations Centre (JOC) meeting this morning, where District Disaster Management Centres provided updates on relief efforts following the disruptive snowstorm that affected the interior parts of the province since yesterday. The snowstorm has blocked major routes, including the R74 (Harrismith to Bergville), R74 Greytown/Colenso Road, N3 (Harrismith to Tugela Toll), R617 (Kokstad to Underberg), and N3 Northbound, among others.

Multidisciplinary interventions have begun to yield results, with some stranded motorists receiving support in the form of soup kitchens, shelter, and blankets. Local municipalities, in conjunction with other state organs, have mobilised graders to clear snow in affected regions, prioritising major routes to facilitate emergency access.

Residents are urged to stay off the roads and avoid using alternative routes, as inclement weather conditions are expected to worsen. According to the South African Weather Service, a Level 8 warning for further disruptive snow is in effect for Alfred Duma Ladysmith, Dr N. Dlamini-Zuma – Underberg, Greater Kokstad, Impendle, Inkosi Langalibalele Escourt, Inkosi Langalibalele Sobabili, Mpofana Giants Castle, Mpofana Mooi River, Okhahlamba and uMngeni. This warning indicates a potentially life-threatening weather occurrence.

The heavy snowfall has also caused fallen trees, further complicating the situation. Residents living near the N3 who can assist stranded motorists with supplies are encouraged to do so safely.

The heavy snow has disrupted essential services, including water and electricity, in several communities. Technical teams are working to restore these services as quickly as possible, but residents should prepare for potential delays due to the weather conditions.

Residents are strongly advised against snow chasing, as road conditions are extremely dangerous. Communities in the northern parts of the province continue to experience heavy rains, raising concerns about localised flooding. Disaster management teams are providing support to these areas, and residents are warned to remain vigilant.

Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels.

Issued by the KZN Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi.
