8 May 2025 Durban Conditions Sunrise Timelapse: Another Perfect Day…

Adam Kamdar of Township Hyper in Durban has been creating pieces of art recently. With his camera! If you have been watching The Sardine News show on YouTube, you will know and appreciate what I am talking about…

The timelapses!

Not only are these magnificent efforts portraying Durban for what it is – a paradise of some sort – but they also reveal far more than we ever thought. About the ocean and atmospheric conditions at that moment. The sped-up footage betrays all that the normal pace eye can not see at all.

A big thank you to Adam. You can show your appreciation by popping over to his Township Hyper Facebook page. This is also where Adam runs the promotional side of things at the huge shop and keeps his shoppers up-to-date with relevant goings-on in and around Durban.

And watch the report right here…

Good morning aye shot Adam
that was the best
most prettiest time lapse we’ve done so far
Durban is paradise really is the most wondrous place
okay and the ocean is absolutely marvelous today
if you can go you must go boy
this is the conditions that we’ve been waiting for
for so long these perfect days cheese keep us alive
the dreams of these days so get out there if you can
alright let’s start up with the moon
there’s quite a big moon 84%
that’s great news for the impending possible
maybe sardine embarkation up the coast
so with Gary Hook reckons they gotta have a full moon
this is the first full moon that’s come along
since the time that we’ve been talking about sardines
way too early I acknowledge that
way too early that we actually studying the conditions
that the sardines need to come up here
and that’s why
I mentioned the hot water in the beginning
because that Agulhas current is screaming again
that will make the counter current stronger
and we’re stepping closer to the sardines bit by bit
there’s hardly any waves
so surfing I’m not sure about but diving and fishing
you gotta go eh 18 to 24 degrees stable atmosphere
1 0 1 8
light on shore in the off
light offshore in the morning
and light on shore in the afternoon
as per usual low tide in the morning
the tides are still moving quite a lot 92 minutes
that is quite a big jump and then high tide
13 forty eight and low tide in the afternoon 19:41
again rad
we’ll catch you in the next report
don’t forget to like and subscribe and maybe even join
Ciao Ciao

Ian at The Block – 9am

Good morning Sean Good Morning everyone
Ian here coming from the Port Shepstone river mouth
Umzimkulu what a beautiful day today
we’re on the low tides going out
I think it’s the first day of spring
if I’m not mistaken um
so we have a pretty much of a very low tide today
uh this morning and then obviously
tide turning towards the afternoon lunch time
as you see it’s looking quite awesome
little bit of a the swell here n there
but more than like an ankle tapper
but the fishing conditions are superb
a little bit of a
offshore blowing down here at The Block
at the moment believe the wind kinda gusts about 10 Ks
today during the course o the day
I think
it’ll make much difference on the sea conditions
but yeah what a lovely
lovely morning here at the block
there’s some guys trying their luck
believe the guys got better fish here
last night and so yeah hoping for a epic day today
I’m here at the office Guys
tight lines and have an awesome day stay safe

Perfect Day in May

Perfect Day in May

Perfect Day in May: it’s on! For fishermen, surfers and divers! Small swell, hardly a breeze, sunny skies, warm water that’s almost clean…! And there are gamefish jumping all over the place.

Surfing

Durban is really small as the 1.5m south south east swell tries to wrap around the piers and get in there. There is still not much tide, just over half a metre or so.

The south and north coasts will fare better with this swell direction.

Diving

After many near misses, hopefully today we will see some shore diving from the spearos. Who have been having a great time – but only out deep! Here is the Bear Report from yesterday…

Fishing

Here we have Alan at Shelly Beach this morning, thank you Alan!

Ian Logie’s exciting report of gamefish jumping around after the freshly arrived sprats got many people out onto the rocks to try throw a spoon the distance. You need a good cast to get to the snoek but they are there right now and anyone with a farcaster is in with a throw.

Ian, yesterday…

FULL Fishing and Conditions Roundup from Ian, Sean, Bruce, Adam and more…

Fishing Conditions RoundUp

FULL Fishing and Conditions Roundup from Ian, Sean, Bruce, Adam and more…

FULL Fishing and Conditions Roundup from Ian, Sean, Bruce, Adam and more…: What a day! Starting out early with Adam, we got a good look at the conditions out at sea. And then Adam is backed up Bruce, Ian and mysefl as we go all around gathering intel on the fishing, the water, and the sardines.

Elton (GoDive) down south have been consistently seeing and diving with sardines but they are also very early, just like us!

Ian’s report is loaded. Snoek, kingfish, bonito and sharks. And oh yes, sewage as RNM workers are on strike again and sewage is flowing at The Block, and at Number 6 pump station upriver. When are these jokers gonna realise the damage they are doing. Diapers, condoms…all of it, going straight in!

The Sardine News and Capital Radio

Capital Radio and The Sardine News

The Sardine News and Capital Radio

The Sardine News and Capital Radio: it was a few years back when I discovered this amazing piece of work by Craig Johnston on YouTube. It was seriously motivational to me, and it certainly transformed the direction I was taking on YouTube.

So the theme of today’s report, although it is still a bona fide sardine report from Elton and the GoDive crew, is paying homage to Capital Radio. The Sardine News did the weekly fishing report at 6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 1990 or so, it was a long time ago! Watch the sardine report below, and then watch the two-hour epic about the struggle and eventual plight of Capital Radio 604. You might need popcorn – and a tissue for the ending…

My tenure at Capital Radio as the fishing reporter lasted about two years. Rubbing shoulders with the radio greats. And getting paid! R172, every two weeks! Back then, that was money. Anyway, please watch this really good piece of work, it deserves all the views it can get…

When I couldn’t make it into the studio to do my show, I had to call in via ticky box, and we would do the report over the phone. I remember many times standing in a remote ticky box, shoving in R1 coins like a slot machine junky and having to hold for ages as the DJ cued me up. It was such a panic that I would run out of coins mid-show!

Just like today with The Sardine News!

Adam Reports In From The Backline – Winter Is Marching In #kzn #sardine #conditions

Winter is Coming to KZN already this 2025 Sardine Run

Adam Reports In From The Backline – Winter Is Marching In #kzn #sardine #conditions

Adam Reports From The Backline- Winter Is Marching In: 14 degrees at the low end and a high of a paltry 19 degrees Celsius today! Luckily, we are up here in KZN at the moment, where we are still sub-tropical and we get the sun’s warm rays warming us through the chill of most days.

Winter

As with what normally happens after a big old cold front like that, it leaves absolute perfection in its wake. Surfers can hunt waves up and down the coast. Divers will be getting clean water courtesy of the SW, which brings the Agulhas Current right in close, where it can perform its cleaning duties wonderfully. And fishers can enjoy the still weather and calm seas. And the warmer water. The cold fronts warm the water as opposed to the warm fronts from the north that cause an ocean upwelling, and the water temperature drops inshore.

However, these chilly seas are sardine conditions. The fishies like the water at 19 degrees Celsius or so. So it is a combination of the cold fronts (low pressures) and the warm fronts (high pressures) plus the counter-current that work together to create the ideal water conditions for the sardines to make their way up along in the inside of the Agulhas all the way to Durban.

Plus, they need a decent winter south swell to help them along. And, observations that the sardines need a full moon to get moving have been proven plausible each year. Luckily, we have a full moon coming up, we are halfway to a good moon right now.

If all these things don’t synchronise and play nicely together, then the sardines stay way out deep at sea, where the public cannot see or get to them. This is falsely seen as a no-sardine run, but meanwhile, the sardines are just way too deep.

It is estimated that a mere sliver of the sardine population makes this crazy run up the coast. 10% is the number touted by the experts. For perspective, one of the big netting boats from out of Helena catches the equivalent of the entire sardine run in one night. Luckily, these big boats are not allowed past Port Elizabeth, and this is why Garry Hook in PE reckons that our sardine population is so healthy as opposed to the Mossel Bay shoal and the Cape shoal.

These populations do intermingle and socialise. Mainly around the Agulhas Banks. But their DNA shows clearly the three separate shoals. And there is another sardine way up north. He is the Grey Sardine and is also exactly in appearance as the southern populations. I have caught and eaten them in a very remote place 50 km south of Pemba, Cabo Delgado, Northern Mozambique. The locals were meshing them old style – on dhows and dugouts. There were so many baby marlin in attendance that one dugout fisherman caught 9 little blacks in one paddle!

These Grey Sardines have clearly adapted to the warm waters up that way and are even reported to be right up in the Gulf of Aden. And into the Red Sea. Maybe one day they might follow the couta right through the Suez Canal and into the Mediterranean!

I just wonder how long it’s gonna take for the Zambies to connect the dots and also make that crossing into the Med! I would have guessed that they would have been first?!
