What is going on with the SARDINES by Kevin in Qora?

What is going on with the SARDINES by Kevin in Qora

What is going on with the SARDINES by Kevin in Qora?

What is going on with the SARDINES by Kevin in Qora?

Hi everyone this is Kevin from Qora Mouth
uh just north of Mazeppa Bay in the Southern Transkei
well um
things are maybe quietening down a bit in KZN
I mean there are nets coming out
but you know um
I think it’s getting to that time of year where it’s uh
beginning of July and uh
the sards are kind of petering out a little bit
the shoals that came up already through
and the ones that they’ve been netting
but I can say
that we had those two large shoals
that moved through the Transkei
within the last two weeks
and I’m pretty sure they’re gonna reach KZN
but we just don’t know where they are right now
nothing in shore
no reports from Port ST Johns of the guys diving
there was was a small report from the Haven Hotel
which is at the Mbashe River
that there was some action there
but smaller shoals just a fractured shoal
so yeah we just don’t know chaps
we don’t know if those are gonna reach
KZN or if everything is kind of going out now
into the current but what I can say is down here
we got a huge swell on the horizon
big south swell generated by that cold front
that came through the Cape
uh the ships are rocking and rolling out there
so yeah let’s hope that uh
things change and that some of these shoals
make it up to KZN and fill things up
and the netting can resume again
anyway we’ll keep you updated as things happen and um
yeah
keep it real don’t forget to like and subscribe cheers

Thanks Kevin!

SARDINES arrive in DURBAN by Adam Kamdar

SARDINES arrive in DURBAN by Adam Kamdar: The sun rose on Durban today bringing with it the spectacular sight of shoals upon shoals of sardines right out off the Sun Coast beach.

Over to Adam…

And barely a few moments later, Team Veez One reported from the beach at Amanzimtoti pipeline that they had bagged a lovely net of sardines and that it was already on the beach!

Over to Team Veez…

We also got a photo of the action…

And then The Bear reported in barely a few minutes after that!

SARDINES at SCOTTBURGH!

Three boats milling about looking for sardines!

Where are the Sardines Today? by Jace, The Bear, Kevin and Sean

Where are the Sardines Today

Where are the Sardines Today? by Jace, The Bear, Kevin and Sean

Where are the Sardines Today? by Jace, The Bear, Kevin and Sean #sardinerun2025 #sardinemigration

STOP PRESS: Nets are busy at Hibberdene but not that many fish coming out…lots of action…

Welcome back to the Sardine News
hi welcome back to the Sardine News
got a big sea a bit of a unruly conditions
the surf’s quite wild netters are out there
but it’s a bit difficult
it’s hard to spot the sardines and it’s all
they’re all scattered all over the place
they’re not like focused in one area
like they were when they first got here
the predators
and all the animals have just scattered them
but it’s still good news
there’s still lots of sardines coming anyway
we’re gonna get into the reports
we starting we’re gonna go in reverse
we’re gonna start right now with Jace at Addington
he’s gonna
he’s reporting from the boat that’s like almost live
then we’ve got Jason at the bluff
he’s gonna check in for us in that area
and then we’ve also got Kevin
gonna check in with us from down in the Transkei
so we pretty much got the whole coast covered
so let’s go to Jace in Durban
thank you very much Jace
by the way for the reports Ciao
all the fish and more
how’s it guys here the boys are sunbathing off Durban
spectacular view on the background
if anyone’s got mutton and cabbage
braised mutton and cabbage with roti
uh you’re welcome to DM US and uh
we will come ashore and pick it up
but for now we’re sunbathing
enjoying it chilling
uh what do you feel like eating today
action
uh
tortoise and sheep head no
KFC KFC yeah you right now
breakfast in the ocean breakfast in the ocean
yeah yeah
Mario some sheep and samosas should do
sheep and samosas
slow mo
KFC KFC
okay so we got KFC uh
sheep and uh
and roti and breakfast I’m saying braise mutton
and that’s what I feel like eating
braise mutton and cabbage
yeah but guys
that’s the lighter side of it
guys having some fun out at sea
when there’s no fish
then we take the good and the bad and we enjoy it
so that’s what’s happening here
see there’s other boats out here as well
hi peeps and welcome to another bear report
this time we are at Bluff Durban
KZN South Africa
this is a Cave Rock here on my left
that’s the tidal pool right
it’s a tidal pool cave
guys are getting a Lekker wave here this morning
hey
look at that yeah
it looks like the shallows has beaned up a bit
with the groundswell
there’s probably some fish out deeper
hey but every now and then hey
some kraakers coming through
hey
these are the smaller sets now
but in between we have some decent walls
yo where’s the viz
uh Widenham looks very clean at the moment
uh but the surf is is kraaking there on the south there
Southbroom looks a good 2
two and a half meters further down south
as regards to sardines today
it seems like only the netters at Addington are out
I don’t know if they got a full uh
net this morning but yeah
they were pulling a net about 15 minutes ago
at opposite Addington Hospital in Durban town eh
yoh check that bomber
hey wax those sticks
go and do some tricks
that’s an Aweh from the Bear
and as always dive straight and safe spears
morning everyone
this is Kevin at Qora Mouth just north of Mazaeppa Bay
Southern Transkei
yeah just an update on what’s happening here chaps
there’s still a lot of sardines around
you know I’m seeing birds everywhere
I’m not diving but moving around
and that’s a good sign because these gannets
if you watch them they
they move towards the sardines
and a lot of the birds this morning
were moving north of me
and I’m seeing birds now moving everywhere here
um going north
going south not flying in formation
so they’re not going long distance
they’re just kind of looking and searching
so yeah um
I think there’s still lots more sardines coming
headed towards KZN we know the mother lode passed about
uh 4
5 days ago probably reaching Port St Johns pretty soon
but they might have gone out deep
so we just gonna have to wait and watch
but it’s not over guys
uh still plenty more coming to KZN
the season is not nearly done yet anyway
we’ll keep you updated as things happen
don’t forget to like and subscribe cheers
okay thanks team
thanks everybody for checking in
hopefully
some more action will transpire during the afternoon

Do The Sardines Spawn Here In KZN?

Are The Sardines Spawning in KZN

Do The Sardines Spawn Here In KZN?

Do The Sardines Spawn Here In KZN? Deep diving Beth Neale has a question for us…we have tried to answer it as best we could…

Welcome back to the Sardine News
yeah welcome back
Sardine News beautiful
beautiful June day again June 18th
just marvelous wonderful stuff
not too much sardine action going on
I heard a rumour that there was a net in *Toti
going just now but in the meantime
um since there’s been so much sardine action
the last few days
I’m kind of relieved that there isn’t too much
news coming in but I’ve been getting lots of comments
lots of questions and I got a question from Beth Neale
we all know who she is and uh
I couldn’t answer it so I figured no ways
I’m gonna ask Kevin to answer it so Kevin off you go
thanks mate
yeah that’s open to debate um
the problem with spawning is that they
they spawn in cold water
that’s why the major shoal moves up the east coast
I mean the west coast um
that’s where they you know come off the Agulhas Bank
they move up up the west coast to Angola
and southern Angola and northern Namibia
that’s where they’re spawning
and then they’re moving back to the Agulhas Bank
and the
the East Coast sardine run is an anomaly
and nobody knows yet if they actually do spawn
because that is what the migration is all about
but Ushaka Marine World had a study going on
where they were trying to figure out
if these sardines are just like
going to their death
and becoming part of the food chain
because of the mistake of coming up the East Coast and
um
there were there’s no results yet
as to whether they are actually spawning
or whether that a large portion of that shoal
once they reach warm water
goes out to the deep
and moves back to their Gallus bank
they don’t even know that yet
so yeah that’s
like a question that everybody would love to know
because that then
that means that the sardine run
actually serves a purpose
uh for the
for the you know
biomass of the sardines
but there’s no definitive answer to that
and that’s something that
if you could come up with the answer to that
scientifically you’d be a millionaire overnight
bud ha ha ha I wish I could figure that shit out
another thing to bear in mind with the sardine run
is that uh
Antarctica
ice cold water down south is very nutrient rich water
that’s why the humpbacks kind of
hang out there in the summertime
and that nutrient rich water full of phytoplankton
in winter time
you get a cold upwelling that moves up north
and it moves over the Agulhas Bank
and that’s what triggers the sardine run
very high nutrients
lots of phytoplankton and that’s what they’re following
um off the Agulhas Bank up the west coast of Africa
and they’re feeding on that the whole way and spawning
and then moving back to the Agulhas Bank
in the summertime so
with the cold upwellings that happen
and kind of splits down at the Cape
these sardines that make the wrong turn
the water that’s coming up
the East Coast is also very rich in nutrients
the same nutrients
and by the time they get to the warmer water
in case it in it’s too warm for this phytoplankton
so that’s also part of the question
um cause they’re gonna run out of food pretty soon
and we don’t know even
if those sardines make it back to the Agulhas Bank
or if they just become part of the food chain
so it’s a very intricate complex
uh situation that’s happening and uh
would love some answers cheers
