MYDO Tackle Talk: Big Baits, Flying Fish and Tiny Couta Traces

Coming to you from Jeffreys Bay, this edition of MYDO Tackle Talk runs through an interesting collection of traces and lure setups, starting with the big stuff before getting into some clever little rigs.
Sometimes taking a step backwards, helps you go forwards – even if it was all by mistake! Either way, the combination of old technology (the centre pin onto which the bait goes), and new technology (the composite material baitswimmer head) that we use nowadays. The result is an infinitely adjustable trace, super-easy to tie, and always has the hook right in the tail, where it’s meant to be.
What’s in the movie?
First up is a serious big-fish trace. Nylon up front, massive 5/0 hooks and enough tackle to accommodate a big bonito, shad, Natal snoek or even a small tuna. When you put a substantial live or dead bait onto a rig like this, anything can happen.
Next is the more familiar MYDO Bait Swimmer, rigged here with only two droppers. Sardine, small shad and bonito are all potential bait options depending on what you’re targeting.
Then we have the Flying Fish. Getting your trolling speed right is the trick with these lures. They skip and dance across the surface, imitating a flying fish that has either just landed or is trying to take off. It’s an exciting presentation for predatory gamefish.

Things get particularly interesting when we scale right down.
For anglers targeting smaller couta with tiny baits in winter, we’ve been experimenting with an adjustable MYDO system. The wire runs directly through the head, allowing the angler to adjust the rig according to the length of the bait. That means the small tail hook can be positioned exactly where it needs to be.
There’s also a simpler fixed-wire version for anglers who prefer that configuration.
Finally, for kob fishing, there’s a compact, heavy option designed for casting into wind and current. A 2 oz MYDO paired with a Bearded Minnow gives you the weight and compact profile needed when extra casting distance counts.
Big or small, it’s all about getting the tackle and presentation right.
