Spring on the KZN south coast: video and gallery

Spring on the KZN south coast: video and gallery

A 2 minute montage of how the finally friendly spring weather works on the KZN South Coast of South Africa. The water along the entire coastline has also cleaned up to “crystal palace” grading and some great catches are being made. Spearos are ecstatic and can be walking around with that dozy grin, in the afternoons. Garrick have made an appearance, alongside the kob…today many anglers could be seen fishing off the Sandspit, the famous rock and surf angling beach in front of the Port Shepstone Country Club.

The accompanying video centres on surfing mainly, as visiting Ozzie Captain. Gallop, Tyler Howard, Ryan Poisson, Raymond Mantis and Shonalanga enjoy a fun early  morning surf at Hibberdene.

The video (and gallery below) also shows an egret feasting on the remains of mullet in the Banana Beach lagoon…where the Pistia invasion is still well underway and the once functioning estuary is under serious siege. More on that here

Gallery from today around the place…

Bruce Gold spotted on the KZN South Coast

Simon Fish and Brucifire celebrating the moment

Bruce Gold on the South Coast

Simon Fish greets Brucifire in a south coast carpark…

It was celebrity hour in the carpark in front Orca’s Bar and Restaurant on the KZN South Coast this past week. Simon Fish and Bruce Gold popped in with various excuses for coming all the way up here from the Cape, and surfing our winter waves…

Not as though they haven’t had their share of waves this winter either…imagine how all those huge swells that battered our egos us up here, must have looked at the famed Supertubes or those other right handers that favour a slightly east swell.

Simon is busy delivering new surfboards, and Brucifire is up here to visit family for a while.

Cape Town surf folk were treated to an exhibition type session down at Muizies this weekend, as Corey Lopez – ambassador for the Wavejet propulsiuon system, demonstrated the units ‘out there’ capabilities.

Cass Collier was seen in the mix, and a bunch of other CT surfers too. Groms and ballies alike!

Cass Collier waxes up ready to go surfing under battery power on the Wavejet propulsion system…down at Surfers Corner in Muizenberg.

The Wavejet propulsion system fits into the bottom deck of any customised surfboard or craft. The boards have a plug that can be inserted into the propulsion system bay, when you really feel like paddling again! Or while your Wavejet unit is on charge. Reportedly, the unit can power you at full speed for an hour, and is remotely operated with a wristwatch, that also cuts the engine if the Wavejet moves more that 10 feet or so away from the rider. More detail to follow on thesardine.co.za

The Wavejet is receiving a warm welcome as it’s applications are being realised up and down the coast. Surfing is just one activity – these units can be adapted to a diverse range of craft including but not restricted to rescue and fishing ski’s, canoes and kayaks, fishing SUP type craft and even the Crocka Ski of the old days…in fact, there will surely be a host of new designs eminating from the huge innovation that the Wavejet unit actually is.

Dave de Fillipi in the barrell

Dave de Fillipi in the barrell

There are very many quality video clips of waves coming in from around the country – here we have Dave de Fillipi easing into the first real winter swell on the south coast. Although Davey makes it looks easy on this wave, it hasn’t been. It’s a strong SE swell with a wobble in it, making for some insane wedging sections and awesome closeouts.

Saint Michaels has been firing, aswell as Uvongo, Margate and Southbroom.

The “Sard’s” proper south coast barrel

The “Sard’s” proper south coast barrel

It takes many, many barrel rides, to finally get one this good, on video.
Sard, well done, fantastic ride…and see you in the morning!

Other than Sard’s fantastic ride today at an undisclosed faraway location, practically every surf spot on the south coast fired today. And it looks to be that way for the next two weeks solid!

Productivity week!
