Beach Bums, Tongaat – Dylan Stewart of Umdloti, KZN emerged the best of the sixty surfers who participated in the annual Off The Lip Movember Surf Jam which took place at Beach Bums at the weekend. The event, now in its second year, is a retro seventies fundraising surf event hosted by Quiksilver and the Movember foundation. Surfers and spectators were invited to Beach Bums on the KwaZulu Natal north coast to relive the glory days, show off their well manicured Movember moustaches, dress in seventies surf gear and ride single or twin fin surfboards from the seventies era.

Amped on the South Coast

Amped on the South Coast

Amped on the South Coast: The Sardine Newspaper is the culmination of many projects over the years, and went under successively different names. At a stage we called ourselves SurfTV.co.za, a fantastically successful name, but was stopped in it’s tracks, due to copyright issues with SurfTV.com.

Guy Bishop, one of our first cameramen when we were operating mainly in the Western Cape, joined us on this experiental road trip, with the Nicholson brothers, Simon and Peter. Starting in Cape Town, we toured up the East Coast to Durban as a team. Both Nicholsons are absolute rippers, and ambitious enough to go up against the ‘Zag, with their publication named Amped. It was a good effort but petered out fast in the face of such stiff opposition and the worldwide economic downturn.

Guy shot this rad behind the scenes video and put together the great edit, on that trip.

Watching it brought back many memories – faces including Q.J., Simon and Peter, Davey Weare, Gary Maisch, Andrew Banks, Carl Roux, and of course Roosta and Badger – the main SurfTV riders back then. We were on a program visiting schools throughout the country telling them that they can chuck school and go surfing. Simon and Peter made quite an impressive duo back then – flying high as sponsored surfers – and I think we got many kids out of school and onto the beach, with that effort. It was a wierd old time, Jordy hadn’t even decided to be Jordy back then, and he wasn’t even invited on the trip?!

Great video, thanks Guy Bishop!

Surf trips to Tofinho

Surf trips to Tofinho

Since 1991, we have been surfing up and down the East African Seaboard, hauling surfers old and young, beginners and jaded…through some of the finest surfing conditions that the world has to offer. Surf trips to Tofinho and beyond are an email away…

In winter time, our beat is to wait for a solid cold frontal system, and chase it from Cape Town to Pemba, Cabo Delgado, Mocambique – thousands of kilometres of travelling and chasing swell. There are so many spots along this route, that many spots have no name – and like Africa – it’s gonna stay that way!

In summer, it’s all about cyclones – and if the stars line up, and the right swell sneaks in just skirting the southern reaches of Madagascar, it lights up all the usually dormant superbanks littered all over the Mozambican coastline. There are just sooo many!

These two situations do occur seasonally as described, but also at odd times, so once you book, we will plan your trip with the most chance of catching it all – ON! Continue reading Surf trips to Tofinho

Llandudno, Cape Town – Saturday the 1st of November saw surfers hit the beach for the Off The Lip Movember Surf Jam. Over 45 participants were greeted by clean 4 feet surf at Llandudno Lifesaving Club, the perfect setting for an event of this nature. Shaven upper lips, old-school surfboards and seventies dress up was the order of the day. The event was staged to create awareness and raise funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and other men’s health issues. Quiksilver, the event organisers, is a major partner and supporter of the Movember foundation and decided to stage this event for the first time in the Cape. Jacob Mellish from Somerset West, now living in Llandudno, put on a fine display of stylish and flowing surfing on an old twin fin surfboard to win the title. Surfers Rally For A Good Cause As Movember Heads For Llandudno Beach

Llandudno, Cape Town – On Saturday the 1st of November surfers of all kinds will congregate at Cape Town’s Llandudno beach for a fun day out at the Off The Lip Movember Surf Jam. This event, which is hosted by Quiksilver and the Movember foundation, is aimed at creating awareness as well as raising funds for men’s prostate cancer, testicular cancer and other men’s health issues. Surfers participating in the event are encouraged to dress in seventies surf gear, alter-ego’s welcome, use surfboards from the seventies era and don freshly shaven upper lips to mark the start of a hair-raising month for creating awareness for the Movember movement.

The event will see eight six-man heats take to the icy Cape waters with the traditional beach start in practice. Unlike traditional surf competitions, surfers will be judged on their style, flow and creative approach to each wave. Judges will include South African surf legends Tich Paul and Gavin Rudolph. Various fun awards such as “Vert Alert”, “Spin To Win”,  “Wave Waster” and “Best Dressed Mo In Character” will be handed out to surfers and spectators alike. Various single and twin fin surfboards from the seventies era will be on hand for surfers to test drive, old school rock ’n roll surf tunes will be the order of the day which will culminate in a six-man final to crown the eventual seventies surf master. Action gets underway at 10.00am with the finals expected to be held at 3.00pm.

All proceeds raised on the day through the compulsory R100 participation fee will be donated to the Movember foundation and their men’s health partner, CANSA. All surfers, families, friends and members of the public are welcome to come down to the beach to join in the fun and support a good cause. Quiksilver’s Dane Patterson is excited for the event and hopes to see it well supported, “We are very proud to be associated with Movember and such a good cause, we really hope that the surf community can pull together to support the event. It promises to be a fun day out with some classic traditional surfing.”
