National Garrick Day

Pierre and the Garricks

National Garrick Day

It’s all about the garrick on the lower south coast of KZN, as they are being spotted and shot at, any point a spearo swims out to. They are in shoals and averaging about 8 to 10kg’s and marauding the plentiful shad and other baitfish in the backline.

Pierre and the Garricks
Pierre de Villers from the Cape pilgrims up to the south coast of KZN each year, to get shots like this and to shoot the odd Garrick. Thanks for the pic Pierre!

Carl Gous (as usual), got his two in the bag on Friday, and tussled with three more as the excellent and ruthless fighters tried bending his spear inside out.

But it hasn’t been National Garrick Day yet. This happens on a rare day in September times, when the garrick come right in close, and into the estuaries, to spawn. After this big party, the fish are ravenous and will just about eat anything. That’s National Garrick Day, and there are sometimes two of them down here at The Sandspit, spaced about a week apart.

There is no early warning system in place for National Garrick Day, and the ones who find out first try keep it under wraps until word gets out and the floodgates open completely.

The following video was shot on National Garrick Day in 2008, and features some of the more (in)famous characters that fish The Sandspit and The Block all year round.

Enjoy!

Marlin off the rocks

Tailwalking marlin off Bazaruto (c) Duarte Rato

Marlin off the rocks

It seems there is no end to these Australians. Check this hour long feature movie shot on location in Jarvis Bay somewhere in Oz. These guys are catching huge yellowfin tuna and marlin – OFF THE SIDE!

They call this spot The Tubes?! Didn’t spot any waves around…mmm. The other spot is Devil’s Gorge.

So for those of you with an hour  and an uncapped connection – enjoy. It is truly amazing watching marlin tail-walking off towards a cliff.

The video is also very well put together and does a great job in capturing the entire scene. This crew is hardcore. They sleep over right there waiting for the action, and when it’s on, it requires quite a gang to wrestle these huge and dangerous fish up out of the ocean.

The video was from last year, 2014…

So far the kob season has produced sporadic catches up and down the entire coastline, most of the action being had by the spearos. But shore anglers have also got a few beauties in the 30kg class. Here is a quick kob gallery of the kob action so far this year.

Mydos available at Gremlins in Margate

Robbie Gavin has been assisting local and visiting anglers to the south coast, catch their dream fish, for 3 decades now!

Gremlins is just up from the famed Margate Beach, famous for it’s fun-in-the-sun vibe and great fishing.

From the Margate Pier south towards Ramsgate you can find numerous spots that are very comfortably fished all the while surrounded by beautiful nature and scenery as the bays and points unfurl. Kob and shad are well fished in this bays and gulleys.

If you are planning a trip down further south, into the Transkei, Robbie knows all the secrets and good spots, so stop by for a chat and an update on conditions and places that are fishing well.

The Mydo Luck Shot Mini #1 available at Gremlins is super fun in the plentiful estuaries and lagoons on the lower south coast. Work a Luck Shot in any of the bigger ones and you are sure to get well excited. Sometimes lures outfish livebaits so it’s great to go prepared for both.

MYDO-MCARTHY
Gremlins in Margate have long been the go-to guys for rock and surf tackle, bait and advice, from the KZN South Coast and way into the Transkei. Gremlins have a strong dropshot section and it is in here that you will the Mydo and MacArthy range of dropshot baits and baitswimmers.

Southbroom, Mpenjati and Umtamvuna are full of gamefish ready to be stalked with these small 0.7 Oz lures.

But the big news this time of the year is the kob run! Expected to happen any time soon now, and already pre-empted by some great catches off the side, including Mike Stubbs big fish on a Rapala, weighing in at 32.7kg’s, caught on The Sandspit in Port Shepstone…

Spinner Tackle for Mydos in Richards Bay (NOT ANY LONGER)

Richard sold Spinner Tackle in Meerensee, Richards Bay, had stock of the super duper Mydo Luck Shot Mini, in sizes 1 and 2. The smaller size weighs in at a tiny 0.7 ounces, so you can accurately flick your plastic anywhere you want it, even in the wind. Rig it weedless with one of MacArthy’s new plastics and you can work a shipwreck if you can find one!
