Rock Salmon vs Estuary Perch Showdown feat Matt Wainright at Mgazi

Rock Salmon vs Estuary Perch Showdown feat Matt Wainright at Mgazi

Rock Salmon vs Estuary Perch Showdown feat Matt Wainright at Mgazi: Matt Wainright is on a mission this year. To make up for the last two years of lost fishing time. Due to the flood conditions that virtually wiped all fishing out for months on end. This time last year was flooding. And the year before.

El Nino

But El Nino is gonna be our salvation this year. It’s written in the stars that this is gonna be a dry year. And so far, so good. Have been keeping an eager eye on the charts and we are looking good. The cold fronts are being forced back by the easterlies of summer. Sometimes they even went backwards! These incessant east winds push the cold fronts out to sea and away from us.

This was not the case last year as every front that came through brought with it moisture-rich air that drenched us.

Wild Coast

After a couple of hugely successful sessions here at the Umzimkulu Marina earlier this year, Matt has set his sights on the wild waters of the Transkei.

Enjoy the picture show…

Rock Salmon vs Estuary Perch by Matt Wainright in Mgazi, deep Transkei Wild Coast

Mgazi!

This infamous estuary is host to countless and many untold fishing tales of a mighty calibre. There be monsters here. In a way, it is another perfect and pristine estuary as it meanders its merry way inland for quite some distance. All kinds of pools and features along the way.

Matt may aswell be the Transkei Navy with all the kit on his boat. And in a place like this, he get’s to use all of his toys. Note the wifi engine controlling watch on his wrist! Yip, whilst he is playing tug-of-war with these crazy fish, he can adjust the position of the boat! Mid-fight! And ace-out!

Transkei Gallery

Rock Salmon

This one hit Matt out the park. For about 5 seconds or so it was game on. But then that rockie realised something fishy was going on and simply spat the lure.

Estuary Perch

This most beautiful species of fish is also aggressive around trick baits. Matt has perfected the skipping paddletail trick and demonstrates exactly how it’d done. To maximum effect.

Trick baiting

No sinker or jighead. A very strong bass hook. Weedless.

Chuck it to the edge. You can skip this rig under foliage to get maximum penetration. Let the plastic flutter its way down to the bottom. Give it some motion. Believe that the fish is now checking your bait out.

“Be the bait you wanna be” – is my best advice.

Imagine you are pulling the puppet strings down there. Twitch. Crank a few times. Pop. Jerk. Drop. Miz all of these actions up and it won’t be long before you annoy that fish enough to pounce (just like bassin’).

While the going is this good – we best get fishing. Join us here in Port Shepstone for the estuary game fishing season. Stay with us and we will take you out on the water.

Mattski getting worked by the Kingfish of the Umzimkulu

Blacktip Kingfish in the Umzimkulu by Mattski

Mattski getting worked by the Kingfish of the Umzimkulu

Mattski getting worked by the Kingfish of the Umzimkulu KZN, South Africa. We don’t even take photos of the grunter and kob we catch at the jetty anymore.

Clean water

This was mid-March and the early dry season conditions that we are experiencing look to be holding. The water has been as clear as it ever gets and our cameras have been rolling. We are mainly filming action in the shallows. These hyped-up Kingfish swim incredibly fast and are challenging to get on tape.

Insta 360

But Mattski’s Insta 360 does a fantastic job of documenting the action from up top of the water. This camera captures everything that happens all around you. And you choose the angle during processing?! This thumps out an editable movie file. But you need never edit?! Matt gets it always just right.

Enjoy the picture show…

More Kingfish coming up

This was the first blacktip kingfish Matt got for the weekend. He had lost two before this little guy.

Then he hooked a bomber! At 3.2kgs, this fish put on a spectacular show for the guests staying and fishing here at the Umzimkulu Marina. They lined the bank and cheered Matt on. He tussled with this trophy fish for nearly ten whole minutes.

Blacktip Kingfish are tough as rubber. They release perfectly every time. It does say a lot for you as a gentleman if you fish for these fish with a single single. Rather than a treble. Or even two. Trebles damage fish. Sometimes beyond repair. This is not acceptable in an estuary.

More fish by Matt…

Another Perfect Storm hits Maputo

Another Perfect Storm hits Maputo March 24

Another Perfect Storm hits Maputo

Another Perfect Storm hits Maputo: 23 and 24 March saw another perfect storm hit Maputo. This is after Mother Nature recently unleashed her fury on Mozambique – starting with Cyclone Filipo. Hitting into Inhassoro up north, then Vilankulos, and the islands. And then creating the perfect storm conditions for what happened down in Maputo next. I have been present through one of these amazing storms. You can read that story on The Sardine News here.

Following in the wake of Cyclone Filipo’s record speed run across Mozambique, Filipo left a huge low pressure hovering over southern Mozambique and Mpumalanga in South Africa. This moisture-rich air simply unloaded its entire payload. Over an 84-hour solid rain period.

Downtown – storm hits Maputo

Maputo

Maputo lives on a drainage system built in the Portuguese era. That was a very long time ago. And with the population explosion in Maputo since the 70s, the infrastructure cannot cope.

This is the result…

Explanation

Over to Duarte to explain…

Basically it’s a massive low-pressure system that has moved in after Filipo and affecting the whole of southern Mozambique mostly with massive rains and mostly in the Maputo area where it rained very intensely for like 84 hours straight and seeing the drainage system is what everyone knows to be it´s just gone crazy and lots of damage, schools are closed, etc etc and hopefully this will not chain up into a cholera outbreak…
Up in Bazaruto we have had a on and off rain but not intense but windy and jus miserable weather at the moment – I have clients here for a week now and only managed to fish a few hours during two days in very messy sea, water still very murky due to debris from Filipo and recent thundershowers and obviously not a great bite with such a low-pressure system.
This low-pressure system which is called Invest 95S was said, a few days ago that, could potentially turn into a cyclone but it has not but still lurking around although conditions have improved last few days but forecast of rain, overcast weather and wind up until the 6th of April.
A further cyclone as developed over the last few days in the Indian Ocean although still very far from Africa´s East coast, this category 1 cyclone as been named Neville and we are watching it with hawk eyes!
It’s a major @#$%^& up…. This poor country does not need all this shit bro!

1 For 12 on Kingfish in the Umzimkulu

Greenspot Kingfish by Christopher

1 For 12 on Kingfish in the Umzimkulu

1 For 12 on Kingfish in the Umzimkulu: Well, I lost count at about 12 strikes! There may have been 15. And yes, we only got one! And a little baby at that. Christopher finally got a baby little greenspot kingfish out of the water on the big pink plug on his trusty carp rod.

Ashlin, Krish, Cuan and I all took a hiding to nowhere. These four guys’ lives have been ruined by this day. In fact, I was joking in this video in fact, that these guys would surely be back this weekend. BUT, they live in Benoni and Springs.

And guess what!?

They have booked for Saturday morning all over again! Now that is commitment. And, it is the level of commitment required to get your mug shot taken next to a bad-mooded baby GT. Or a greenspot. Or a blacktip. Or a perch. Or a rock salmon. Or a koblet…

It’s all on at the moment.

The full story appears on the Umzimkulu Adrenalin website right HERE. Where you can get in touch and make a booking.

Enjoy the picture show…

Floods

We also need to consider very seriously, that last year this time, and the year before, were flooding! And so to have the estuary in such fine shape – the reason the fish are here too – we need to take full advantage of the good times!

Kit

In this video we do learn that you cannot take a knife to a gunfight. Team Christopher are gonna load their best bass kit with 30lb braid when they get to Joburg. In preparation for Operation Revenge on the Kingfish of the Umzimkulu.

Fishing News March 2024 featuring Mattski vs Blacktip Kingfish plus #Vilankulos #NorthCoast #SouthCoast

Fishing News by The Sardine Ides of March 2024

Fishing News March 2024 featuring Mattski vs Blacktip Kingfish plus #Vilankulos #Northcoast #SouthCoast

Fishing News March 2024 featuring Mattski vs Blacktip Kingfish : Matt Wainright pushed his custom estuary killing machine out off the jetty and started drifting away as he prepared for a gamefish session in the Umzimkulu. He hadn’t even turned his camera on and the kingfish just came up all around him. Right in front of the guests staying at the Umzimkulu Marina lodge. His first two got away, but for the third, he was ready – Insta 360 camera and all.

First cast

Once Matt had upped his leader and tied on another plastic prawn, with the camera rolling, his very first cast produced the BANG he was ready for this time. Alas, it was a small fish, and after dodging the net once or twice, and clearly jumping right of the net once too, Matt brought it aboard for a lecture. And set it free.

3kgs

The next fish, was slightly upriver from the jetty, and once again, in full view of the growing crowd. Matt had cheerleaders!

But this fish was proper. And it took a full 10 minutes to be finally sent to detention for a minute or two. Get given it’s lecture about taking things with hooks on, and set free to avoid lures from now on.

Although we sped up up some sections, it was a long fight. And so, we decided to read the news during the epic battle. Vilankulos. Natal North Coast. Port Edward. Port Shepstone where we are at the moment…
