Wavejet powered SUP: First impressions

Wavejet powered SUP: First impressions

When the call came through, that our Wavejet powered SUP had arrived…it was slow motion from that moment on. It felt like some sort of dream, or like being in a movie…I mean every surfer since a kid as dreamed of a powered board. Struggling against the raging Ponto D’Ouro torrent, being swept out to sea in a huge easterly swell, charging against the crowds at Supers…the thought of some power to your paddle has danced around in front of us like a fantasy for eons.

And here it is…

The Wavejet powered surfboard.

As it turns out, this time, our power is attached to a monster surfboard. 11 feet of it. And when I first fired up, nothing happened, except a noise and a vibration under my feet. Remembering detailed instructions from Mr. Patrick Skeates, the go to Wavejet guy in Cape Town, I stroked a few times with the paddle, and next thing the jets bit into the water and scooted me off at some weird kind of full speed.

I was off…belting across the Umzimkulu River with a paddle in my hand and a huge scifi looking wristwatch flashing all sorts of coloured lights, on my wrist. I tapped the single button on the wristwatch and almost fell off as the jets let go. Another tap and I was back off zooming towards the far bank. Time to turn. Oh oh…it ain’t that easy, and we put the huge single fin right at the back of it’s box, but with the paddle in the water as far out as possible, she turned on a ticky. Obviously, the further back you go on the board, the easier the turns become.

So taking turns, John Fever and I zoomed around the wharf, the dogs insisted on coming aboard, at one stage I had 2 Jack Russells with me. If you know how to surf or skate, or ski I suppose, this is very easy. There is practically no stability problems for smaller guys like me and Fever.

Then my Dad had a go, he is huge, and opted to sit paddle ski style…and off he went, zooming around and around…with that same smile everyone gets when they get a go on this machine.

Then John took a ride down towards the mouth, turning back just past Spiller’s Wharf…when he got back, the Wavejet was still beckoning fore more, but the wristwatch was playing disco lights by now. So because it was our first session, we undid everything and took the pod upstairs for a clean and a charge.

The charging pack deals with the wristwatch and the Wavejet pod, at the same time. The wristwatch sits in a recessed holder within the charging pack (a pelican case style box) and a cable plugs simply straight into the pod. When the lights all go green (there are many lights)…it’s back on the water!

Fitting the pod back into the board is a one minute operation, and getting it off should be too, but John and I had difficulty the first few times. By now we are experts and do it a second. The supplied tools make things a cinch.

So, it’s a great piece of kit, and on the huge SUP, is versatile enough to take over a big portion of your ocean going hours. For funning around on flat water, it’s great…remembering that we are using clean energy, and aside from electricity to charge with, there are no other costs.

It is pouring with rain down here on the Umzimkulu today, and looks like it’s going to continue. But on Saturday, at 10am, we will have our Wavejet SUP down at Spiller’s Wharf, for anyone interested in buying one, or just having a go.

In the meantime, the waves are cooking at The Block, fish are jumping, and the Wavejet pod and cameras are fully charged…check back soon!

From Vodacom…

“New low-cost device and Power Bundles to drive internet access in emerging markets

Vodacom today launched the Smart Kicka, a new smartphone that represents a step-change in affordability. This device, which is the first ever Vodacom-branded device, was designed specifically to make it possible for more South Africans than ever before get access to the internet.

“At the moment only 27% of people living in South Africa’s emerging markets have access to smart devices. We aim to double that number in the next year. The Smart Kicka is not only affordable, coming in at around the US$50 level, but also offers the best from a technology perspective. Put simply it gives users the best possible internet experience without breaking the bank,” said Phil Patel, Vodacom’s Chief Commercial officer.

The Vodacom Smart Kicka, which is priced at R549, runs the latest Android 4.4 KitKat operating system and has over 4 gigabytes (GB) of memory, a 3.5” screen and a two mega-pixel camera. The device will also come with five free 50 megabyte (MB) Power Bundles to get people connected straight away.

“By including Power Bundles we’re making it easy for first time internet users to experience the web – whether it’s downloading music or catching up with friends on Facebook,” said Patel.

Launched in March 2014, Power Bundles have been hugely popular with around half of all prepaid usage now stemming from bundles. Vodacom currently sells around 40 million bundles per month which give prepaid and Top Up customers bite size, time-based access to Vodacom’s network. Power Bundles include 10 minutes of airtime for R2, 60 minutes of airtime for R4 and 50 MB of data for R3. All of the bundles can be accessed by dialling *111# and are available for purchase in stores.

“Our strategy is to provide customers, particularly those on tight budgets, with exactly what they need, when they need it, and at a price they can afford. Much has been said about bringing down prices for those consuming large amounts of voice and data, but this bundle strategy is the key to driving internet penetration for all South Africans. The success of Power Bundles as well as our other bite-size voice services, like Power Hour, has meant that quite literally millions of people are now able to access services that used to be out of reach,” said Patel.

By actively reducing data prices and through new initiatives like Power Bundles, Vodacom has brought down the average effective price per MB of data by 30% over the past year.  This has resulted in a 70% increase in data traffic on its network, with over 52% of Vodacom’s 32.5 million South African customers now using data.

On top of providing affordable products and devices, Vodacom is also investing heavily in its network to ensure that its new internet users have a seamless online experience. This year alone Vodacom plans to invest upwards of R9 billion in its South Africa network. A large portion of this has been earmarked to provide 3G coverage in emerging markets across South Africa.

“Our strategy is very simple. We aim to have 3G coverage wherever we have voice coverage,” said Patel.   “

Umzimkulu Marina: August 2014 family fishing offer

Umzimkulu Marina: August 2014 family fishing offer

wpid-20140729_173059.jpg
The Niteshift and The Umzimkulu…standing by at the ready, to take you fishing, surfing or cruising…call Sean on 079 326 9671

For the month of August, we are running a Family Fishing special offer. R200 per adult per night get’s you in and a kid under 16 free…plus a host of free activities and discounts for deep sea fishing and salmon fishing. August so far…

“We’re having a great time down here on the Umzimkulu River, as quiet as this August month gets. The river water is crystal palace and the river is teeming with fry – all shapes and sizes. You can also see prawns walking around on the bottom, and grunter have been tailing across the sandbank on the north side. The river valley is finally warming up and conditions for fishing the estuary are at a high. Live bait is everywhere, bring your cast net or yozuris, and some heavy tackle. Those big momma kob have to be curious enough to cruise in and out of the deepened mouth at night time…or even the daytime.

The waves out front, in the mouth have been absolutely flawless, but with no takers so far. It’s peeling down from way out back….where the sand has filled to connect to the inside bank – waves peeling for 100 metres or more! Clean water so you can see the stupid thing coming!

Shad are still dominating most anglers’ attention, filling the huge void left by the complete lack of sardines, who are apparently being harvested by the thousands of tonnes, off Cape St. Francis and adjacent ports. I mean, there are only so many available in a year, so if they get taken before they even get past Coffee Bay – then what’s the point? Obviously the fat cats that be put more value on a tonne of dead sardines, than on a tonne of tourists here to see the sardines alive?!

Luckily Garrick and Daga Salmon are also dead on time. Smaller kob in the 5 to 12 kg range are the rage right now…the bigger ones ought to show up soon enough…but the smallies are keeping people up very late (or early) as the fish readily devour a paddletail or jerkbait in the Witch’s hours.

Geelbek Salmon have gone on the boil off Durban, but our catches down south here have been limited to 8 or 10. Since the quota has come into play, that’s great fun for an hour or two, and we are back home. But we are having to travel far and wide searching for the elusive fish.”

So call us on 079 326 9671 if you would like to experience this great fishing spot in our quietest month. The R200 per night special includes one child under 16 free of charge. There are also discounts on fishing trips and other activities. The Umzimkulu Marina Family Fishing Offer expires 31 August 2014…
