Vilankulo, Vilanculo, Vilankulos, Vilanculos, or Vilancoulos?

Vilankulo, Vilanculo, Vilankulos, Vilanculos, or Vilancoulos?

There are probably more spellings for this tiny gem of a coastal town, in Inhambane Province, Southern Mozambique, but these are the one we know of.

The partial featuring of the word “Vila” within the towns name, led me askew as to what it means, in Portuguese (as usual). What could “Coulos” mean? A quick look leads to “colon”. I asked around. And got that loosely, very loosely, Vilancoulos means house as far away as your colon?! This was by some local Rhodies who have colonised the place.

A bit of Google set me straight.

Chief Vilankulo is whom the town is named after. And the area is called Vilanculos.

And it’s not that far. In an aeroplane!

From JHB, Vilanculos is a lovely 2 hour or less flight, that sweeps you in and over the Bazaruto Archipelego for magnificent views, on most days. Depending on your scheduled flight, you may even be treated to a landing and take off at Inhambane Airport, in the middle of another, far more sandy Archipelego. Eye candy.

Once you are in Vilankulo, Captain Duarte Rato is a phone call away and he will see you out there making the most of your sojourn to paradise. Duarte runs FishBazaruto.com and can get you aboard a huge marlin chasing boat or a sunset chasing dhow – whatever suits your requirements and your crew/family.

Combining an ocean safari with an island barbecue, or your sunset cruise saves you a whole session with which to plan something else. Like shopping a storm up through the markets, or exploring the natural habitats like the wetlands, filled with avian splendour starting with the flamingoes.

So while one bunch are out there catching fish, the ladies and kids can comb beaches and snorkel – all meeting up later for a fish braai on an island somewhere.

Click on over fishbazaruto.com where you can access a string of articles, pages, video and blogs on all things Vilankulos and Bazaruto.

Vilankulo, Vilanculo, Vilankulos, vilanculos
Vilankulo, Vilanculo, Vilankulos, Vilanculos, Vilancoulos – it’s all the same out on the ocean!

VILANKULOS / BAZARUTO FISHING REPORT – August 2016 — FishBazaruto.com

Just like the end of July, the fishing off Vilankulos and Bazaruto started with a bang with lighting fast game & sail fish action in early August. This was particularly true with the nice size wahoo that where on the roll and savagely attacking the plugs, lures and whatever else you offered and more often…

Exploring the Bazaruto Archipelago

Exploring the Bazaruto Archipelago

There is just so, so much to do and see, in the Bazaruto Archipelago.

But you need a boat.

And this is when you log on to fishbazaruto.com and get in touch with the team who are right there in Vilankulos. With boats aplenty.

Fish Bazaruto is captained by local guide and skipper, Duarte Rato. Who has amassed more hours out and around the Bazaruto Archipelago islands than even most of the fish out there. His main job is taming huge marlin and teaching them some manners before releasing them. His stern talking to’s have gained Duarte much respect in the world of marlin fishing.

Fish Bazaruto have recently expanded their fleet and have begun focusing on family and fun activities, to complement their sport fishing packages.

So now, whilst the manne are out fishing, the ladies and kids can cruise the villages and explore  the markets, ride a fat bike, cruise in a canoe…

Or take a boat!

Out to the deserted sandy islands and beaches, winding through crystal clear channels, sea life all around. Flamingoes. Rays. Maybe even a pod of dolphins will come say hi. The boat cruises are customizable and can include an island barbeque. Or snorkelling the sea grass for seahorses. Or catch and release fishing. Or just soaking up some well deserved vitamin D.

For an even more adventurous day, go on an ocean safari or whale watching trip (in season) and put yourself right in the thick of things. Marine wild life in these waters is world renowned. They even got dugongs!

So get in touch with Captain Duarte Rato via his content rich and feature-filled website on fishbazaruto.com

Enjoy the gallery!

4th JULY BLUE MARLIN WORLD CUP 2016

Captain Duarte Rato from fishbazaruto.com had a long time dream to enter the Blue Marlin World Cup in Mozambique waters.

Having fished the World Cup since 2006 this was a special time seeing it was the first time ever I would fish it in my home waters in Bazaruto – it was actually the first time a boat entered from Mozambique. This is not surprising seeing July is peak of our winter and not our…

1000lb Black Marlin off Baz

1000lb Black Marlin off Baz

This 1000lb Black Marlin was loaded, off Bazaruto, on boat Black Bob, a few years back.

27 Year old lady angler Stephanie Choate was in the chair and she had more than a fight on her hands. Eventually however the fish got tail wrapped and died.

They were able to plane the massive weight to the surface and before too long realised just how big the fish turned out to be.

1018lbs!

They returned to their mother ship, the Quo Vadis, where the fish was weighed on the correct equipment, and verified as being a grander marlin. Not something too many 27 year old ladies have done before!

For more about the spectacular fishing Bazaruto has to offer, click on over to fishbazaruto.com, where you can find:
