A 2 minute montage of how the finally friendly spring weather works on the KZN South Coast of South Africa. The water along the entire coastline has also cleaned up to “crystal palace” grading and some great catches are being made. Spearos are ecstatic and can be walking around with that dozy grin, in the afternoons. Garrick have made an appearance, alongside the kob…today many anglers could be seen fishing off the Sandspit, the famous rock and surf angling beach in front of the Port Shepstone Country Club.
The accompanying video centres on surfing mainly, as visiting Ozzie Captain. Gallop, Tyler Howard, Ryan Poisson, Raymond Mantis and Shonalanga enjoy a fun early morning surf at Hibberdene.
The video (and gallery below) also shows an egret feasting on the remains of mullet in the Banana Beach lagoon…where the Pistia invasion is still well underway and the once functioning estuary is under serious siege. More on that here…
Gallery from today around the place…
The otherwise and dangerous sea conditions that prevailed across the eastern seaboard last week and before, left Johnny Fever no chance but to attempt a launch on the Wavejet powered Pau Hana SUP. The Umzimkulu is normally piloted by very fast ski-boats built to punch through waves, whatever the size…so to even think about this attempt was ambitious.
The task proved a huge challenge, and after his first attempt, which saw him upside down in the shark infested soup, he turned and caught a mid break wave in. Fever’s second attempt almost got him out there, but the rolling 10ft sets that stopped him, would have stopped a tug too!
Stay tuned for more pics and the video…
The Wavejet SUP was the star attraction of the show this last week in the Transkei, where it’s adaptation to a fishing craft was explored, with great results.
Stay tuned for that story too…
BAZARUTO MARLIN SEASON OPENS WITH A BANG!!!
Bazaruto has come alive nice and early, and Captain Duarte Rato is right on the scene again…
“BAZARUTO MARLIN SEASON OPENS WITH A BANG!!!
We caught some GT´s on plug and some game fish but Carl Jankowitz´s trip was about Marlin fishing and what a first charter it turned out to be. The water looked a bit milky on the edge on the first day so we opted to go out wide to 500 meters of water where we had been connecting to Blues in July and August. On the first day we got a amazing strike on the short left tube and connected to a 700 pound Blue that was one of the fastest fishes I have ever experienced. Unfortunately we lost that fish. The next day we went out wide again and this time we hooked up on the short right bait and released a Blue estimated at 600. The water looked better shallow on the last day and we decided to give it a go for the Blacks on live bait and we ended the day releasing two out of two strikes. The first fish was about 200 pounds and the second, that gave an amazing display by the boat went 250 lbs.”
Thanks Duarte – amazing!
