While surfing frontdoor down the beach from Tofo, Chad Leavitt of Lalaland had the honor of a visit by a inquisitive little Zambezi! It swam straight towards him and then veered off at the last minute presenting itself for a clear identification. Another tick off your bucket list Chad!
Oceanic Marine artist Darrell Hattingh has been producing amazing fish art and sculptures for over 30 years. Darrell excels in underwater scenes drawn or sculpted as he has seen them in his thousands of hours spent underwater – spearfishing. This experience enables Darrell to perfectly emulate the subjects in their natural behaviour of hunting and preying.
Here Darrell has produced a brace of serious looking wahoo as they hunt for prey somewhere off our coastline.

We had the privilege to meet and hang out with travelling surfers and adventurers Lucy Small and Anna Macauly from Australia a few months back, here in Praia do tofo. They were here for just a few weeks. But the Quantas jet that was supposed to take them home, had two empty seats, upon takeoff!
Yip, Lucy and Anna just stayed and stayed, soon to be joined by Hannah Cottrell, who also just stayed and stayed. Teaching surf lessons and playing live music (Hannah) – living the dream.

Pent up in a fancy hotel in Johannesburg – one of those places with excellent service from friendly men in waste coats and those fancy trolleys they wheel everything for you on. Awkward music in the elevators and an overpriced 24-hour room service menu.
Quite the contrast the the entirety of the last six-and-a-half months.
Looking through photos from my life in the motherland, that sickly happy-sad feeling of nostalgia creeps up. Oh, so happy it happened, oh, so sad it’s over.
Two KZN south coast anglers, Koos Viviers and Dave Sproston (now in Plettenberg Bay) have something fishy in common. Dave tagged a catface rockod three years ago, and Koos recently re-caught it. Koos found the tag and submitted it to the Oceanographic Research Institute. The details are below:
ORI FISH TAGGING PROJECTTAG RETURN
DEAR KOOS VIVIERS
Thank you for sending us details on a tagged fish.
Listed below are the details for which you have been patiently waiting.
Israel features no less than four seas – The Red, The Dead, The Med…and the Sea of Galilee. But it’s the Med that has the fish!
David Kosta, living and fishing in Israel – has been catching amazing fish in the Mediterranean Sea for ages now?! David lived and spearfished South African waters for many years – and is now back in Israel and is the Rob Allen and Mydo Lures distributor for the country. What is really amazing though, is that he is catching some of the very same species we get back here in Southern Africa. (Jules Verne’s subterranean channel maybe?)
David Kosta and his 43kg Amberjack pulled up from the deep blue Med.
Featuring ‘couta and monster amberjack in this insert, David has perfected the art of big baits fished deep down. He has used Mydo lures for many years and has perfected the art of deep dropping big baits for big fish.
Scomberomerous Commersoni – ‘couta, king mackeral, tanguiguie, spanish, narrow barred…but this one was caught in the Mediterranean!
Below is a picture of the rig these guys use to fish deep. The number 4.5 Mydo – get’s the bait down deep yet it still has an action – especially on the drift in current – in waters up to 40m or more.
A rigged bonito on the Mydo # 4.5. Serious tackle for fishing in Israeli waters
