Weekly Spearfishing Report

Weekly Spearfishing Report

The diving conditions have been below average this week. A south west blew today (Friday) and the swell was up today. The wind should clean it up a bit. Saturday a light direct east blows with the swell running at 1.7m and getting smaller during the day. Sunday morning a fresh south west blows picking up the swell to 2m during the day. So it looks like Saturday is the day. There was viz reported south today. Brusher, Garrick, geelbek, daga salmon and some fair size natal stumpnose are in the shallows. As always dive safe and straight spears.

So you wanna see a bait ball?

An amazing shot by Captain Duarte Rato (c) of a baitball off Bazaruto Island, Southern Mozambique

So you wanna see a bait ball?

So, you wanna see a bait ball?

Check this one out!

When Captain Duarte Rato gets excited, so do I! He has been frothing over these amazing pics he lucked into whilst on a charter off Bazaruto two days ago. This one is a shark based bait ball, but many others were instituted by sailfish the same day. The bait balls are everywhere, even down here in Barra and Tofo.

And they are having the desired effect on the fishing.

The fishing off Bazaruto has been epic this last couple of weeks. Huge yellowfin, by inshore standards are being encountered. The ones that are coming out have been 40kg’s! The ones that have been getting away and there have been plenty, have been estimated at over 50!

Wahoo and couta have also been going mad, as they do, this time of the year, every year.

Sailfish are a bycatch of fishing for tuna, couta and wahoo really, and are almost as plentiful. There have been plenty sailfish all over lately. Targeting just sailies yields big numbers. Sometimes 5 or 10 a day. All released of course.

It’s just the big mommas, that are taking their time to appear. A few encounters with 800s, and a bunch of smaller fish, “rats”, as Duarte calls them, but a little quiter than last year.

Duarte is at sea right now…so stay tuned for more Bazaruto torture!

Fishbazaruto Boats are The Answer To Everything

Fishbazaruto Boats are The Answer To Everything

Captain Duarte Rato has steadily been building an armada of sport fishing boats, for charter, in the Bazaruto Archipelego and surrounding waters.

The latest to join the fish fighting fleet is the Sailfish. A 27 Novacat powered by everything!

All Duarte’s boats are highly maintained fishing machines – the answer to every fishing challenge out there.

Weekly Spearfishing by Jason Heyne

Weekly Spearfishing by Jason Heyne

Weekly Spearfishing by Jason Heyne

Jason is always on time with his Friday reports, but they just miss the 11am publishing each Friday of The Sardine News by email. So, once again, a slightly belated report and forecast from Jason…our man under the KZN water…

“The diving conditions this week have been surprisingly good after all the rain and storms on the weekend. The sea settled nicely on Wednesday and is still good today(Friday). Saturday a light north east blows during the day and the swell runs at 1.5m. Sunday a moderate south westerly blows with the swell running smaller at 1.3m. The wave period will pick up to 16 seconds so expect some big sets. Hard to say which day will be better for a dive but I’m leaning towards Saturday. Viz was reported north and south today. Daga salmon, Garrick and GT’s are still here with brusher putting in a good appearance both north and south. We will be having our annual shorediving species competition on the 15th of October and it’s going to be a great event. Check the poster for details. Hope to see all of you there. As always dive safe and straight spears.
