Aliwal Shoal chosen as one of the first Hope Spots

DR. SYLVIA EARLE TO UNVEIL ALIWAL SHOAL AS ONE OF THE FIRST SIX SOUTH AFRICAN HOPE SPOTS

This December, South Africa welcomes to its shores legendary marine conservationist and oceanographer, Dr. Sylvia Earle. During her years at the forefront of ocean exploration and scientific discovery, Dr. Earle has achieved a long list of impressive accolades- including  being awarded the TED Prize in 2009. This prize takes the form of a bursary awarded each year to an individual with a vision to change the world for the better. With these funds, Dr. Earle founded Mission Blue, a marine conservation organisation dedicated to creating a global network of Hope Spots. Hope Spots are marine areas considered critical to the health of the ocean and therefore deserving of protection, of which there are currently 51 in existence worldwide.

Previously, the Africa Marine & Leisure Expo has not only celebrated the beach lifestyle for which the South Coast is so famous, but also shone a spotlight on marine conservation groups acting to safeguard coastal environments both in the province and throughout South Africa. This year’s event was no different, focusing equally on informing and inspiring the crowds about conservation issues, and making sure everyone that attended had a fantastic, fun-filled day out.

Llandudno, Cape Town – Saturday the 1st of November saw surfers hit the beach for the Off The Lip Movember Surf Jam. Over 45 participants were greeted by clean 4 feet surf at Llandudno Lifesaving Club, the perfect setting for an event of this nature. Shaven upper lips, old-school surfboards and seventies dress up was the order of the day. The event was staged to create awareness and raise funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and other men’s health issues. Quiksilver, the event organisers, is a major partner and supporter of the Movember foundation and decided to stage this event for the first time in the Cape. Jacob Mellish from Somerset West, now living in Llandudno, put on a fine display of stylish and flowing surfing on an old twin fin surfboard to win the title.
