The Sardine News: Early Morning Beach Report – March 26, 2026
The Sardine News: Early Morning Beach Report – March 26, 2026: Sunrise is at 6:03 AM, so you’ve timed this perfectly to get those lines in before the “changing of the guard.”
KZN Coastal Conditions: Rapid Recovery
The KZN coastline is famous for its resilience. Consequently, even after a stiff onshore like yesterday, the water clarity and smoothness typically returns the next morning. The current water temperature is sitting at a crazy 25°C to 26°C, which is perfect for the summer gamefish currently visiting our shores.
Today’s Tide & Surf Data (Durban/KZN South Coast)
- Low Tide: 02:17 AM
- High Tide: 08:57 AM (The incoming push is happening right now!)
- Swell: Settling at around 1.5m to 1.7m with a 7-8 second period.
- Wind: Light North-Easterly at 5-8 knots, expected to pick up later.
The El Niño Effect: Where are the Sardines?
We are currently navigating a warming cycle influenced by El Niño. This phenomenon has pushed sea surface temperatures higher than the sardines generally prefer for their northern migration. Consequently, there has been zero sardine activity reported recently. The cold-water “highway” inshore reverse current they need simply hasn’t materialised yet.
And it might not! We have had super sardine runs every year since 2021, when we started logging the sardine run sightings and netting on interactive maps, that you can peruse using the links at the bottom of this page.
Gamefish Action: Snoek and Stealth Kayaks
While the sardines are hiding, the gamefish are definitely “volunteering.” Natal Snoek are all over at the moment. The kayak guys are having a field day because their stealthy craft don’t spook the shoals in the shallow, clean water.
Furthermore, the Agulhas Current is hugging the coast. This deep blue water is bringing tropical surprises with it. Rumours are swirling of a Marlin shot by a spearo off Durban recently. Additionally, a huge shoutout to Richardt Botes, who recently landed his first Sailfish off Durban.

Mydo Baitswimmers: Big Couta Season is Here
It is officially Big Couta Season. To catch these monsters, you need a bait that swims naturally and stays deep. Our MYDO HD rigs are designed exactly for this. Tie a decent-sized bait onto a MYDO Baitswimmer, deploy it before the sun hits the horizon, and you are in the game.

Sean’s Final Word from the Sand
It’s 3:30 AM. The crew is awake, the coffee is hot, and the ocean is calling. We are hitting the water to see what the sunrise brings. Tight lines to everyone out there today!
