Tracking Sardines With Kevin Touhy: Kevin analyses conditions…

Morning everyone
this is Kevin at Qora Mouth
just north of Mazeppa Bay in the Southern Transkei
well the big shoal
obviously is still slowly moving northwards
they’ve passed through the Dwesa area
and they’re probably approaching the Bulangula
Backpackers area which is just south of
of um
Hole in the Wall so
they should be reaching Hole in the Wall by tomorrow
sometime
and then they’re into Port Saint Johns right after that
they’re definitely hugging the coast right now
probably
due to the water temperature being at about 19 degrees
in shore
and they like to stay close when there’s current
because the shallow of water
due to the friction on the bottom
the current slows down considerably
so yeah chaps
what we need now is for them to get moving towards KZN
and what’s gonna do that
is some cold fronts to come through the Cape
and there is a small front arriving in Cape Town
tomorrow with a bit of rain
and then next week middle of the week
looking at quite a considerable um
southerly storm coming through
remember Cape Town gets winter rainfall
and we get snow in the mountains
that’s due to these fronts that come through
so we can expect the swell to pick up sometime uh
early next week I’d say
and once the south swell picks up
these sards are gonna start marching much faster
up towardsKZN
so we’re still looking at a good timeline
we’re looking at within the next couple weeks
this big shoal should have reached KZN
well the southern reaches of KZN
so yeah it’s game on guys
keep it real
and we’ll keep you updated as things change
don’t forget to like and subscribe cheers

Sardines and Sighting Maps

We have started the 2025  Sardine Run Map! Download our app to your phone or device, accept notifications, and you will never miss a single sardine.

2024 was a thrilling year for sardines. All the action has been logged right here on The Sardine News. The 2024 map has been viewed 200 000 times and just keeps going.

Which led us to decide to keep the map live. And keep adding unique marine animal sightings and events. That occurs non-stop all year round. Last year we started to log more whale and dolphin sightings. And we even had a shipwreck! This year we have had two sailboat incidents already. PLUS, we have already logged some sardines!

Here are the links to existing and past Sardine Sighting Maps…
