Daga Salmon reported by Spearos

Daga Salmon reported by Spearos

Jason Heyne checks in with his weekly spearing report – this week featuring some eagerly awaited for daga salmon. They are also here for sardines, and the big ones are often caught from the shore, right in the shallows! Just please be considerate with this fragile population. The big ones are our breeding stock, and we need them alive! Take your one for the season by all means – they are a very difficult fish to catch or shoot. But leave the rest for next year! TX Jason

“The diving conditions this week have been above average. Daga salmon have made an appearance in the shallows down south, big garrick up north and decent wahoo out deep. Saturday and Sunday a light offshore wind blows in the morning switching to a light on shore in the afternoon. Swell starts at 1.5m on Saturday dropping down to 1m on Sunday. Both days are looking top for a dive. Well done John on getting fish of the week a 24.5kg daga salmon on a shore dive. Good luck to all competing in the second day of natal champs tomorrow. Viz was reported north and south today. As always dive safe and straight spears.” – Jason

Jaco Blignaut wins gold at Spearfishing Nationals

Jaco Blignaut number one again

Jaco Blignaut wins gold at Spearfishing Nationals

Jason Heyne reports in that Jaco Blignaut has taken the nationals again! And a few other things from under the waves up and down the KZN spearfishing coast.

The diving conditions were OK Saturday and Sunday then swell and wind every day made for an upset sea. Couta garrick and snoek are around and plenty other gamefish should be around as well because the sardines have arrived. Saturday a light offshore blows in the morning switching to a light to moderate north east in the afternoon with swell starting at 2.2 m and settling down to 1.5m later in the day. Sunday a light offshore blows in the morning with negligible wind later on and small 1.3m swell. So it looks like Sunday is a green light for a dive. Fish of the week goes to Kobus Delport with a 12.5kg garrick which also won him biggest gamefish at the SAUFF comp on the weekend. Well done to our KZN divers who cleaned up at Nationals. Well done Jaco Blignaut for placing 1st in individual event. Thank-you Freedivers and Rob Allen for sponsoring gear! As always dive safe and straight spears.

20kg Sangora Yellowtail by Carl Werner

Carl Werner with his 20kg Sangora Yellowtail

20kg Sangora Yellowtail by Carl Werner

Another informative spearfishing report by our hard working Jason Heyne…story goes he writes these reports underwater!

The diving conditions this week have been pretty average. Garrick have started filing up the north coast and some bigger couta and snoek are around.  Saturday a light offshore blows in the morning switching to a light onshore wind in the afternoon with the swell running at 1.5m. Sunday morning a light south West blows in the morning dying off later in the day with the swell running at 1.7m. So Saturday is the day for a dive if you can find viz. National spearfishing camps will Finnish up on Saturday with the team event. Also on Saturday SAUFF is holding a free entry comp weigh in at DUC 15h00 prizes for biggest snoek garrick and couta. Well done Carl Werner on getting fish of the week a 20 kg Sangora tail. As always dive safe and straight spears.

This report is sponsored by The Umzimkulu Marina. Very well positioned family and fishing lodge, with slipway into The Umzimkulu River. Or launch at Shelley Beach – just down the road! Too easy…straight into the tail of the Mozambique current.  Protea Reef being the main attraction.

The diving conditions this week have been epic. Garrick have arrived, snoek are around in numbers and shoal cuda are thick. Saturday the wind blows offshore in the morning switching to a light to moderate north east in the afternoon with the swell picking up from 1m in the morning to 1.5m in the afternoon. Sunday morning the wind blows offshore switching to a moderate south West in the afternoon and the swell runs at 1.3m throughout the day. Viz was reported north and south coast today. Jason Heyne get’s his sailfish on Aliwal

Jason Heyne's sailfish shot on Aliwal

Jason Heyne get’s his sailfish on Aliwal

Just in from Jason Heyne down the south coast of KZN, happily reporting his sailfish.

Epic conditions on the shoal today – lost two cracker wahoo – these fish continue to elude me. At the moment the score is Wahoo 6, and me 0. One came in close of deep Scotties and I got a broadside shot in garrick style. Aimed middle and the fish spooked on the trigger so the shot went high and the ‘hoo just shook it off and showed me a zap.

Dave Adworth got well worked over by a 200kg plus black marlin that bust him up proper. Took his gun and everything. Meanwhile his dive partner Chad shot three wahoo from 15kgs to 27kgs.

At 06h30 there were eight boats around us, by 08h00 there were twenty!

But the wahoo still hung around in amongst all the traffic.

Then the fishermen left as they couldnt make any bait, Mark de la Hay and all the other pros scratching their heads.

Then right in the middle of all this I plonked my saily. It went on a grand tail walking show in and around the boats with anglers watching on.

Thanks Jason! Keep up the good work!
